(C) RUSSIAN CONTRACT COLT MODEL 1911 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH HOLSTER.

Lot # 1159 (Sale Order: 52 of 345)

Manufactured in March 1916 as per a copy of a factory letter from Colt. According to Clawson, Russia started acquiring 1911s in February 1916, making this an early shipment. Russia ultimately ended up funneling most of the purchases through Britain, which were marked in Cyrillic on the dust cover; as a direct shipment from Colt, this gun was not marked as such. Half-moon front sight, U notch flat top rear sight. 2 line 2 block patent dates and Colt information on left side of slide, Rampant Colt at rear of slide. Right side with "COLT AUTOMATIC / CALIBRE 45". Frame with "GOVERNMENT MODEL / C 303558". Checkered spur hammer, left side only safety, slide release, and magazine release. Short 1911 grip safety, flat smooth mainspring housing with lanyard loop. 2 piece truncated diamond walnut grips. Two-tone magazine with lanyard loop. These rare guns were shipped into Murmansk and Archangel before distribution to Russian forces; beyond that little of their history is known, however, there is one account that a 1911 was used to kill the Romanovs. Accompanied by an unmarked leather holster with single belt loop and retaining nub; given the wear pattern, this 1911 has been in the holster for some time. CONDITION: Good, considering that most of these pistols are found in well used condition. Retains approximately half of the factory blue finish with losses at high edges, grip straps, and across top of the slide, consistent with holster wear. Magazine in commensurate condition. Lower left grip screw marred but grips do not have discernible cracks. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is very good with strong rifling and heavy frosting. There is a small import mark on the magazine well indicating import by Simpson Ltd, Galesburg, IL. Holster is fair with crazing and areas of heavy rubbing. Toe has come loose. Accessories: Holster Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: .45 ACP FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1911 Paperwork: Factory Letter Copy, Previous Listing Serial Number: C30358

(C) RUSSIAN CONTRACT COLT 1911 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL

Lot # 1160 (Sale Order: 53 of 345)

As per the included copy of a Colt letter, this pistol was shipped as part of a shipment of 2,500 on March 31st, 1916, directly to the Russian Government. These pistols were produced in 2 distinct variations, one as standard Government Models, and the other with special Cyrillic markings on the dust cover that translate to "English Make"; those marks typically appear on numbers above 50,000, and are not present on this gun. These rare guns were shipped into Murmansk and Archangel before distribution to Russian forces; beyond that little of their history is known, however, there is one account that a 1911 was used to kill the Romanovs. Standard configuration parts include half-moon front sight, U-notch rear sight, 2 line 2 block patent and address information on left side of slide, with uncircled Rampant Colt at the rear of the slide, right side with Colt caliber information. Frame with "GOVERNMENT MODEL", serial number, and small subinspections. Spurred checkered hammer, checkered slide release with milled relief area, checkered thin tab safety with milled area, long milled trigger, checkered magazine release, short 1911 grip safety, smooth flat mainspring housing with lanyard loop, checkered walnut grip scales. 2-tone magazine. CONDITION: Overall very good, retaining the majority, approximately 60-70% of the Colt bluing, with silvering and handling marks throughout, concentrated to slide. Typical takedown mark and pings around slide release from improper installation. Appropriate distension around proofs from application of stamp. Straps have thinning and silvering throughout, consistent with the heavy use these pistols underwent. Grips appear to be period replacements. Mechanically fine, excepting occasional tendency to hammer follow, bore is excellent with strong rifling and some mild frosting. No import mark observed. This is a very good example of a very scarce pistol. Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: .45 ACP FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1911 Paperwork: Copy of Factory Letter Serial Number: C32898

(C) VERY RARE EXPERIMENTAL UNDERWOOD M1 CARBINE WITH FLIP OUT BLADE AND SLIDING STOCK, EX MOLLER.

Lot # 1164 (Sale Order: 57 of 345)

This possibly unique experimental M1 carbine is numbered "E101" in Underwood's experimental prototype range. The standard Underwood barrel is dated "12-42" over an ordnance flaming bomb stamp. Milled protected blade front sight and early "S" marked 2-position flip sight. Milled trigger housing with push button safety and flat magazine catch. Early blued flat bolt. The forward portion of the stock is a rather normal walnut construction with low wood cut, several extra reinforcements added to the body. Standard "M" marked 2-rivet handguard retained by a Type II band, no sling swivel present. This is where normalcy ends on this carbine and the very unusual features begin. The left side of the forend is mounted with a recoil reducing cheekpiece with built in oiler which sits directly above the trigger guard. Although the recoil of .30 carbine is somewhat underwhelming another experimental Underwood carbine, serial number E128, is known with a recoil absorbing stock. On this example the butt portion is no longer present, although it appears to have originally been able to fold out of the way. Interestingly, this example is also fitted with a folding, rearward facing blade bayonet which nestles under the cheekpiece when not in use. Bayonet has a hole cut allowing for the sights to be used while in its closed position. A very unusual experimental carbine, perhaps the most interesting this cataloger has come across. PROVENANCE: EX George Moller Collection. CONDITION: Good. Metal retains the majority of its fading original parkerized finish mixing with some patina. Folding blade shows some evidence of older oxidation. Stocks have scattered impressions. The cheek piece is fragile with several hairline splits. One larger crack was glued at some point long ago and has now separated. Bore is defined with areas of abrasion. Mechanically fine excluding the recoil reduction system which would benefit from mild conservation. A fantastically interesting WWII experimental carbine for the advanced martial arms collector. Barrel Length: 18" Caliber/Bore: .30 Carbine FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Underwood Model: M1 Carbine Paperwork: Previous Listing Serial Number: E101

(M) ACCURACY INTERNATIONAL SUPER MAGNUM .338 LAPUA MAGNUM BOLT ACTION RIFLE WITH ULTRA-RARE VOMUND B

Lot # 1170 (Sale Order: 63 of 345)

This very rare rifle was used as a demonstrator rifle for Tier One units, such as CAG and DEVGRU, circa 2007-2008 as denoted by the 07 serial number prefix and 2008 proof date for barrel. Notably, this was when the United States military was actively experimenting with .338 Lapua Magnum as environments like Iraq and Afghanistan demanded a more suitable extreme range cartridge. What makes this rifle particularly special is the installed LaRue LT641 Night Vision "Vomund" bridge. The LT641 was only produced in extremely limited numbers between 2008 and 2010 and was tested by Tier One as their NV bridge for the AI setup; while details are scant, it appears that they saw use with DEVGRU and CAG, and they were not offered commercially, making examples out of the cage very rare. Classic long action Accuracy International Super Magnum in .338 Lapua Magnum with factory tan skins on a folding thumbhole stock and fluted barrel with distinct threaded two-chamber muzzle brake. LaRue mount replaces bipod spigot mount; original spigot mount and bipod on spring loaded legs included. Housed in an AI green deployment case with appropriate cutouts for accessories, including two spare magazines, aforementioned bipod mount and bipod, lock, and cleaning rod bore guide. With 4 test targets demonstrating this rifle's accuracy. PROVENANCE: From a private individual who acquired the rifle from a relevant agency and wishes to remain anonymous. CONDITION: Excellent, showing only some very minor marks, presumably when used as a demo piece, most offensive some very minor silvering to sharp edges of NV bridge. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent, bright and shiny, with strong rifling. Rightmost case latch damaged and will not catch; accessories excellent. A very rare example and a must have for a sniper collector or a modern military collector. Accessories: Pelican Case Barrel Length: 27" Caliber/Bore: .338 Lapua Magnum FFL Status: Modern Manufacturer: Accuracy International Model: Super Magnum Paperwork: Test Target Serial Number: 07SM11551

(A) AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND RARE IRISH "HOWTH" MAUSER MODEL 1871 BOLT ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 1180 (Sale Order: 73 of 345)

This 11mm M1871 Mauser is one of a group of “old Mausers” that the Irish Defense Forces sold to arms dealer Sam Cummings (Interarms) in 1959, along with shiploads of Irish SMLE rifles, handguns, machine guns, and artillery. The story of the Mausers’ sale and acquisition can be found in two articles in Man at Arms magazine: “The Irish Howth Mausers: Where Are They Now” (August 2019), and “The ‘Howth’ Mauser Saga: An Update” (December 2022). Both of these articles conclusively confirm the Irish provenance of many of the Model 1871 Mauser rifles that are now in American gun collections. The bayonet lug on his rifle was altered significantly (moved from the side of the upper barrel band to the underside of the upper band) by the Irish Volunteers to accommodate an altered French Gras rifle bayonet, and this alteration is one of the telltale indicators of an Irish Howth Mauser. This rifle was purchased directly from Potomac Arms in Alexandria, Virginia, (Interarms retail outlet) by a previous owner in the 1970s. This Wurttemburg-made rifle is marked “Oberndorf”. Its previous owner purchased it as a gift for his brother-in-law in Ohio, but when he shipped it, a postal employee inadvertently ran over the boxed rifle with a forklift, shattering its grip. The late Paul Smith, a noted firearms restorer and craftsman, put it back together in 2014, with a fiberglass reinforcing rod inside its grip. One has to look very carefully to see the repair. The bolt stop screw does not go all the way into the threaded hole on the bolt, although all of the other parts have matching numbers. This Mauser rifle was carried (but not fired) for about ten years in various Living History programs that centered on the activities of the “Fingal Volunteers” (5th Bn, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers) during the Battle of Ashbourne—the only tactical success on the part of the insurgents in the 1916 Easter Rising—and it was a focus of attention among the attendees at a number of these historical events. This rifle was displayed in exhibits at presentations about Irish Nationalist arms to several gun-collecting clubs in the Mid-Atlantic region, and it was featured in “Guns of the Easter Rising” in the September 2013 issue of the American Rifleman magazine and also in a 2004 article about Irish Nationalist arms in Shooter’s Bible. The Irish Volunteers only smuggled 1,500 of these Mausers into Howth and Kilcoole from Germany in 1914. Many of them were destroyed during and after the 1916 Easter Rising, and, as such, it is estimated that Interarms was only able to bring a few hundred of these guns into the United States from Ireland in the late 1950s and early 1970s, and less than thirty of them remain in Ireland, mostly in museums. Many of those rifles in private collections in Ireland have, by regulations, been rendered inoperable and they command exorbitant prices at auction. PROVENANCE: Kenneth Smith-Christmas collection. CONDITION: Very good, metal is a smooth, soft brown patina throughout, possibly rebrowned before use by the Irish. Legends are softened but legible. Stock with handling marks and impressions throughout as befits a rebellion used gun and with aforementioned repair. Mechanically fine, bore is good with strong rifling and frosting throughout. Barrel Length: 33 - 5/8" Caliber/Bore: 11mm Mauser FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Mauser Model: 1871 Serial Number: 74D
