ATTRACTIVE MOUNTED FULL SUIT OF MAXIMILIAN ARMOR.

Probably late 19th century, in the early 16th century style. Accurate and well-made with thick steel construction. This suit has a very authentic feel and great patina. (A) GERMAN FURSTENBERG FLINTLOCK MUSKET DATED 1694.

Lot # 2002 (Sale Order: 2 of 661)      

This musket was shortened to cavalry carbine length during its period of use, perhaps in America during the Revolutionary War. The three stage barrel is unmarked. The early convex banana lockplate is marked "FURSTENBERG" vertically at the tail in a banner and "L No 68" in the center. The brass furniture includes an S-shaped convex sideplate buttplate with a long tang and baluster ramrod ferrules. An iron sling swivel was added at back of trigger guard and one towards muzzle. The large wrist escutcheon is engraved "G.V. / Montf. (Montfort) / 1694". Fruitwood stock with relief-carved foliate design around barrel tang and shaped panels around lock, sideplate, and ramrod entry ferrule. Period iron ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina, lock functions, and is in its original flintlock configuration with some small parts perhaps replaced during the period. Brass retains a light brown mustard patina. Front of trigger guard bow has been reinforced inside during period. Stock shows scattered age cracks and marks from use. (A) QUEEN ANNE FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY JAMES FREEMAN.

Lot # 2003 (Sale Order: 3 of 661)      

Stockel records two James Freemans in London, one circa 1732 and the other 1738-1756. Both were guild masters, the latter taking the position in 1754. Classic Queen Anne form with a three stage turned barrel with wedding rings at the girdles and a turned cannon muzzle. Breech with octagonal faceted design, which rotates once with smaller facets, engraved with wriggle work and light incised starbursts. Signed "LONDON" across top facet, and "JAMES FREEMAN" under the pan. Bridled pan with integral fence and gooseneck cock. Trigger guard with incised starburst design. Darkly colored stock with three pierced silver inlays, a silver wrist plaque, and a silver grotesque mask buttcap. CONDITION: Metal has been cleaned in the European fashion with some fine areas of pitting visible and engraving softened, but still legible. Silver has tarnished to a mellow color. Stock is somewhat dry with numerous cracks and splice repairs throughout. Mechanically fine, bore with some areas of pitting ahead of the chamber, unscrews and attaches freely. CONDITION: Very good, overall. Both retain 80-90% original brown finishes on locks, barrels and mounts. Some light wear to gilt and some thinning to areas of brown finish. (A) FLINTLOCK PISTOL WITH A FRENCH BARREL BY CHASTEAU AND A GERMAN LOCK BY BROCKMAN.

This is an interesting pistol with a high quality French barrel, a German lock, and a stock of unusual birdshead form. Round barrel with a partially flattened sighting plane, decorated with relief carved floral scroll and shell motifs with gilt highlights, signed "Chasteau A Paris" at the plane, and fit with blade front sight. Convex lock signed "BROCKMANN" under the pan and "A Rostock" under frizzen. Appropriately sized ramrod with horn tip retained by a single iron ferrule with turned edges and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Plain iron furniture with a faintly floral finial. Stock with floral carving at the tang, with raised panels around the tang, sideplate, and ramrod channel, and a horn nosecap. CONDITION: Barrel with flashes of the original bluing, with the vast majority of the barrel a mixture of dove grey and brown toning. Other furniture has been cleaned in the European fashion over some darkness and brown toning. Stock with some handling marks and impressions throughout, one small split under horn forearm cap running to approximately the first ramrod ferrule. Cock a replacement as it does not correctly engage the sliding safety. Mechanically fine, bore is very good, clean and smooth with some minor oxidation. (A) REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD BOULANGER FLINTLOCK PISTOL.

Lot # 2006 (Sale Order: 6 of 661)      

Boulanger is recorded circa 1762-1784, initially as the auditor at Charlveille and the worker inspector. In 1763 he was the Controller of the Castle (probably a supervisory position) at St. Etienne, and is believed to have held similar positions at Maubeuge. Round barrel with flattened sides at chamber, with gilded and chased designs of geometrics and florals, with a panoply of arms at rear, and a more elaborate than typically seen spider at the front sight blade. Flat trumpet headed ramprod with slot of rear for patches is retained by a single turned ferrule before feeding into a reinforced mouth. Flat lock with a faceted and bridled pan signed "Boulanger St. Etienne", gooseneck cock, and slightly stepped at rear, with light floral engraving. Sideplate with light engraving. Wrist with elaborate relief floral scroll carving around the tnag,which is repeated ahead of the trigger guard finial, which is an elaborate urn with florals. Buttcap with stirrups and silver pommel cap with a panoply of arms. CONDITION: Barrel an even mixture of original bluing, brown toning, and some additional cold blue, with flashes of dove grey. Gilt with good definition, some thinning through base metal. Stock is very good as gently cleaned, with softening to carving throughout, with scattered handling marks and impressions throughout, including some spots of wood fill about the sideplate. Furniture cleaned in the European fashion over scattered darkness. Mechanically fine, bore with some areas of oxidation. A very attractive French pistol from the Revolutionary War period. (A) US HISTORICAL SOCIETY REISSUE OF THE FAMOUS PITCAIRN-PUTNAM PISTOLS, WITH DISPLAY CASE.

In 1775 Major John Pitcairn led the British advance on Lexington carrying a pair of all steel Murdoch rams butt Scottish flintlock pistols. On the retreat from Concord, the pistols were lost and captured by Americans and presented to Major General Israel Putnam. This pair, part of a limited release of 900 by the US Historical society, beautifully replicates the originals. Barrels are floral scroll engraved with facetted cannon muzzles and fluted breeches. Stocks are likewise scroll engraved with belt hook and ball trigger. On the left side each is engraved in a panel "Lexington / April / 19, 1775", the opposing sides engraved with Pitcairn's crest. Pistols are accompanied by an attractive stand up display case with description plaque, as well as a 1979 dated letter from the Whitney Armory Museum to the original buyer. CONDITION: Excellent with only light handling. Display case is likewise fine. This spontoon is pictured and described as plate 48.PAA on page 377 of "Battle Weapons of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. It is noted that it is in the author's collection and still retains two of George Neumann's tags including his signed yellow collection tag with description and drawing. Head is symmetrical and measures 15-5/8" in height. The wide leaf-shaped blade has a pair of bird head shaped base projections. Narrow mounting socket with small straps. George noted that this is from the Germanic area of Pennsylvania C. 1755-1780. Complete with 56" original haft, 71-1/4" overall. CONDITION: Head retains a brown patina, haft shows some smoothing from use and has a pleasing original surface. A very attractive documented pole arm from the most famous Revolutionary War collection ever assembled. Blade Length: 15 - 5/8" Overall Length: 71 - 1/2"

This sword was purchased from George Neumann by the consignor at the Baltimore arms show many years ago. It still retains its handwritten tag in Neumann's writing that states that it was from the Guthman Collection and dates 1780-1800. The slightly curved English type blade has a single fuller at the top on both sides. Brass four slot D-guard hilt with primitive eagle head pommel and a bone grip with spiraling gadrooning. CONDITION: Blade retains a pleasing grey brown patina. Hilt slightly loose to blade. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina. Grip shows a couple chips at base. AMERICAN USED BRITISH BASKET HILT FOR HIGHLAND REGIMENTS IN AMERICA.

For an article concerning Jeffries and Drury basket hilts, removed markings on this pattern sword, and for another identical example with markings removed in this fashion, see "Man at Arms Magazine" Vol. 45, No. 6, December 2023. The article shows another example with the marking defaced in exactly this fashion. This pattern was made by the British in the mid-18th century for issue to its Highland Regiments, particularly troops in America, where many examples are found both dug and intact. This sword has a single edged blade with a partial fuller along the top on both sides. The original markings on both sides of the blade were a large crown over "GR / DRURY". On the right side of the blade, the "D" and "Y" in DRURY are partially visible. These markings were removed for American use during the Revolutionary War. The full basket has a series of pierced circles and triangles typical of this pattern. The wood grip retains its original leather wrap with a strand of twisted brass wire. There is a brass ferrule at the top of the grip, just below the coned pommel with ball capstan. below the grip there is a thick iron washer. CONDITION: Blade retains a freckled grey patina with a rounded tip and scattered "battle" nicks to cutting edge. Hilt retains a matching patina, one joint on basket has been repaired. Original grip very good with minor losses. Hilt is tight to blade. A very nice basket hilt that saw extensive service. Blade Length: 25 - 3/4" Overall Length: 36"

CONDITION: Blade retains a light grey patina and is somewhat bright. Hilt retains a pleasing dark mustard patina and is tight to blade. Scabbard shows crazing and minor losses to surface, throat mount is absent and minor losses to leather at top on back side. A very nice petite American sword. In the center, there is a guilt brass four leaf clover applied. A brass button fastens the flap with a loop. CONDITION: Some minor scuffing, cracks to surface and minor flaking. Leather strap for button is detached. A very attractive and complete early cartridge box.

Lot consists of 2 identical bronze signal cannons on naval style carriages. Both cannons measure 14 - 1/2" in length and are approximately 2 -1/2" in diameter. Both bores measure 1" in diameter. Cannon (A) does not allow light to flow freely through the touch hole, and upon further inspection has debris in the breech, however, touch hole is drilled all the way through and should function properly. Cannon (B) allows light to flow freely through the touch hole. Both carriages move easily. Cannon (A) has a lock bar to allow the cannon to sit securely in the mounts, however (B) does not. CONDITION: Very Good.

This fantastic horn dates 1750-1760 and measures about 10-1/2" overall across the bow. The horn is done by a professional engraver and features polychrome reds and blacks. There are a total of 53 engraved Indians and soldiers in great detail, all are engaged in battles or skirmishes. There are several cutoff limbs at the site of one fierce battle depicted near the top. Other scenes show Indians with scalps hanging from rods and sporting war clips. Some battle are in the woods and have soldiers and Indians laying on their stomachs firing shots from muskets. The largest and most organized battle of the horn is taking place at Fort Niagara. The rivers, towns and forts are extremely detailed. There is a large British crest in the center, a compass rose, a decorative cartouche with vacant inscription, a running buck, and two gentlemen with muskets or rifles. Some important places depicted and labeled include: Fort Ontaria, Fort Niagara, Lake Champlain, Ticonderoga, Lake George, Fort William Henry, Half Broock, Fort Miller, Saratoga, Stillwater, Half Moon, New York City, Albany, Schenectady, Oswego, Lake Ontario, Onyda Fort, Fort Newport, Wood Creek, Bull Fort, Canada Creek, d'Falls, Fort Stanwix, Fort Henry, Fort Hunter, Stonrabby, German Flats, Fort William Johnston, and others. MEMENTO MORI CARVER 1759 DATED ENGRAVED FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR FT. TICONDEROGA POWDER HORN OF GEORGE

This powder horn measures about 12" overall across the bow. The horn was attributed by William H. Guthman to the desirable Ticonderoga "Memento Mori" carver. The front of the horn is inscribed "George WooLcott : his horn / Made at Ticonderoga : November 9 : 1759". George Woolcott lived from 1747 until 1809 and was from Newington, Connecticut. George would have been only 12 at the date on the horn, however, his two older brothers, Caleb and Justus, were both privates in the 5th Company of Gen. Lyman's Connecticut Regiment, and they may have commissioned it for their younger brother. George later served in 1775 as an Ensign in the 2nd Connecticut Regiment. The inscription is engraved within the distinct elaborate "Memento Mori" carver's cartouche surrounded by ornate professionally engraved floral and foliate scrolls. The three stage horn has two scalloped rings below the spout followed by a faceted section. The main body begins at the top with a scalloped edge. The convex wood plug is retained by wood pins. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing honey patina. There is some deterioration due to water on back side of horn. PROVENANCE: Purchased from William Guthman, August, 2002, for $11,000. Accompanied by copy of Guthman's receipt and extensive records on George Woolcott and his brothers. An exceptional horn.

The two-stage horn measures about 10" across the bow. The front is inscribed "SAmuEL BLACKmAn / june 1757" . Samuel Blackman, 1736-1820, served in Captain Andrew Ward's 14th Company of Phineas Lyman's Connecticut Regiment. He was stationed at Fort Number 4 in Charlestown, New Hampshire in June, 1757 when this horn was made. He was extensively involved in the French and Indian War and took part in the campaigns of 1756, 1759, 1761 and lastly served under Israel Putnam in the failed assault on Havana in 1762. The horn inscribed by the maker, "Ioseph Coley his wark mad / at number 4 june the 11 1757". Joseph Coley served in the same Connecticut company as Blackman in June 1757. The horn is engraved with four ships, a building facade probably at Fort No. 4, birds and other animals. There are also flowering plants and trees. The wooden plug is slightly convex and has a brass lanyard loop for strap attachment. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing light honey patina, some light carry wear. PROVENANCE: Purchased from William Guthman in 1992 for $4,800. Accompanied by copy of the receipt on Guthman's letterhead, information on Fort No. 4, service records for Blackman and Coley.

This small horn measures only 6 - 1/2" overall. The main body is finely engraved and has the date "1776" in a rectangular cartouche on the back. The front is inscribed "ARSHER / BROWN * HIS / HORN" on the front in a cartouche with tulips finely engraved on the top right of the cartouche. Asher Brown lived from 1743 until 1794 and lived in Union, New Jersey. He is listed as a private in the Essex Co. militia in 1776, posted at Fort Lee or Fort Washington, on the Hudson River. It is engraved with the outline of a star-shaped fort, 16 detailed houses, 3 ships (one a 12 cannon ship), several detailed fish, geese, and floral splays of tulips. The wooden plug is convex with a Rosemead nail in the center for strap attachment. There is a period copper band near the mouth to reinforce some hairline cracks. Complete with copy of receipt from William H. Guthman from 1995 (sold $3,200) with a description of the horn and history. Complete with copies of records and research pertaining to Arsher Brown. CONDITION: Horn retains a pleasing dark honey patina.

Parts from this model have been excavated at known campsites of Lafayette's Light Infantry troops. This model is rare, especially so with a "US" surcharge. The round barrel is stamped "DY 76" on the left side of the breech, denoting a 1776 date of manufacture. The convex lockplate has an early deeply stamped "US" horizontally at the tail. The center is engraved "Manuf Royale / de St. Etienne". Standard Model 1774 iron furniture. Complete with the rarely intact iron bayonet clip protruding from the muzzle band. The original sling swivels are still in place as well. The right side of the walnut buttstock is carved with "4WKW". CONDITION: Barrel, lock and iron furniture all retain a pleasing dark patina, markings excellent. The lock is in its original flintlock configuration and has a strong, well-functioning mechanism. Partial period wooden ramrod. The stock shows some wear and scattered marks from use, wrist has been professionally repaired. A very important American Revolutionary War used and marked musket. (A) LOT OF 3: BRACE OF FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS PISTOLS AND BLUNDERBUSS BY J & W RICHARDS.

This set includes a blunderbuss with brass three stage barrel with turned cannon muzzle. Left flat stamped with private London view and proof marks as well as "R / I & W" for makers Joseph and William Richards. The brothers were partnered between 1808 and 1815 in London. Their family has 6 generations in the trade of gun making, with Westley Richards (1814 - 1897) being the last. The lock is inscribed "J & W / Richards" in the center and features a sliding tang safety. The brass furniture includes a triggerguard terminating in an acorn finial, an engraved full sideplate and a vacant oval wrist escutcheon. Plain walnut stock with original horn-tipped wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Brass mostly bright with some green corrosion around touchhole. Lock is very crisp, in its original flintlock configuration and functions well. Stock has a repaired break to bottom of buttstock and one at the muzzle. The pair of pistols have round brass barrels with flared muzzles, a sprig of engraving in front of the breeches and private London view and proof marks on left sides of breeches. Both locks are marked "J & W/ Richards" in the centers. Locks feature roller frizzens. The brass furniture closely resembles that found on the blunderbuss and includes full stirrup pommel caps, vacant oval wrist escutcheons and triggerguard finials with acorns. Partially figured walnut stocks of late Georgian form. Complete with their original horn-tipped wooden ramrods. CONDITION: Brass barrels are polished. Locks are original flint with crisp and well-functioning mechanisms. Markings excellent. Stocks show scattered minor marks from use. This is a beautiful set by a scarce and desirable maker. It would be difficult to find a complete grouping from this period in this condition.
