(A) SCARCE EVANS NEW MODEL LEVER ACTION SPORTING RIFLE.

Lot # 3102 (Sale Order: 101 of 341)      

Features a full octagon barrel, a ladder military-style rear sight, a dovetail front, and two piece walnut stock with matching forearm. The S lever is case color, balance of gun is blue. The top of barrel is stamped with Evans legend. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel retains majority of dulled blue with overall scattered age freckling. The frame retains about 85% with age freckling, and some bleeding through the patina. The stocks are excellent with some handling marks along with some oil saturation The lever shows traces of color. The bore is well defined and mostly bright. A nice example. Lot # 3103 (Sale Order: 102 of 341)      

Manufactured in 1896 per Madis. Fitted with a blued octagon barrel with full length magazine tube, German silver dovetailed front sight blade, and sporting rear. Stocks are plain walnut with a blued steel nose cap and crescent rifle butt plate. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel retains significant portions of original blue drifting to patina with some high edge wear. Receiver has traces of polished blue in the protected areas, the balance a mottled gunmetal gray patina. Lever has a few bright flashes of case color but is mostly a patterned patina. Forend remains proud to metal with some scattered impressions. Stock has been cleaned with abrasions, dings, and nicks. Bore is bright with crisp rifling and some minor abrasions. Fine mechanics. This is the classic pre-WWI Winchester carbine with all standard features, including full magazine, folding ladder rear sight, post front sight, saddle ring and stud, two bands, blue finish, gumwood stocks, and carbine butt plate. There are two screws on the left side in the usual position for a receiver sight, which was done at a later time. CONDITION: Fine. The frame retains at least 90% blue mixing patina with overall age freckling. Barrel and tube are 90% with sharp Winchester barrel legends. Stocks are excellent, proud to metal with nominal dings. Manufactured in 1905. The standard barrel length for this model was 24", making this 26" version a special order. Otherwise, all other features are standard including a full octagon barrel, full tube, Lyman front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight, blue finish, walnut stock with S-curve metal butt plate and matching forearm. CONDITION: Very good. The barrel shows some soft blue and blending with grey patina. The bolt has some of the same thin blue but majority of metal is a smooth patina with sharp Marlin barrel legends. The stocks are proud to metal with sundry dings and dents. The right side of forearm has a 4" deep scratch but does not appear to be a crack. The stock has a few deeper gouges. The action is smooth. (B) A reproduction tiger maple haft and head which has a series of engraved lines just ahead of eye on both sides. (C) British pipe trade tomahawk found c. 1930-1940 in Ontario County, NY according to its tag and label, tiger maple haft is a reproduction. LOT OF NORTH VIETNAMESE FIELD GEAR CAPTURED BY GENERAL EARLE WHEELER.

Lot # 3109 (Sale Order: 108 of 341)      

The lot contains Vietnam War NVA field gear, helmets, and flags, all captured and brought home from the war by General Earle Gilmore Wheeler who was a United States Army general who served as the chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1962-1964 and then as the sixth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1964–1970. The gear consists of a canteen, backpack, and ammo belt. There are two flags, one of silk and the other cloth. The cloth flag has a capture tag that reads "BOOTY WON BY THE 21th V.N RANGER BATALLION DURING THE OPERATION THAN PHON 7". There are also two pith helmets, one of which exhibits a net and scrim with a plaque bearing a similar message as the flag. It states that the helmet was captured during the same operation and was taken by Lt. General Nguyen Huu Co and given to General Wheeler as a gift. The gear was all most likely captured at the same time and given to General Wheeler as tribute to his time in Vietnam. All items exhibit various wear, stains, and blemishes commensurate with wartime use and age. CONDITION: Good.

A massive lot of items that belonged to Earle Gilmore Wheeler (1908-1975), United States Army general who served as the chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1962-1964 and then as the sixth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1964–1970. The lot includes various plaques and other awards that were presented to him for serving various positions and some were presented by foreign military leaders. There are also stacks of invitations to various events, including political and relating to the White House, photos, letters, newspapers, and other documents and ephemera relating to the General's life and career. There are also eight swagger sticks, most of which have presentations to General Wheeler. There are also several certificates and documents contained in cardboard rolls. The group is quite extensive and features many interesting political related invitations to various events and cards/letters. This is a very nice archive of a US military General who served in many positions throughout his career with pieces that would excite the military and political collector. All paper exhibits blemishes typical of old ephemera with most in good condition with legible text, signatures, and graphics. CONDITION: Good.

The barrel appears to have been cleaned at one time and the barrel legend is only partially visible and is a soft patina, no nickel remains and barrel has some dark brown areas. Circa 1840s Norwich style production although not marked with a Norwich address. Bar hammer marked on the left with "ALLEN'S PATENT". 6-barrel cluster marked with early "PATENTED 1837. CAST STEEL" on a rib. Blued frame is engraved with open flowing foliate scroll, extending into geometrics on the back strap. Nipple shield also etched with decorative motifs. Nipples remain packed with old grease. Early style quick drop grips with oval escutcheons. Revolver is housed in a partitioned mahogany case with brass reinforced corners. Accoutrements include a flask, mold, and wiping rod. CONDITION: Very Good. Traces of original blue are retained in protected areas, the balance faded to a gray patina. Grips show some light marks and finish loss, the left grip cleaned. Good bores. Fine mechanics. Case has some handling marks and evidence of separation at the base, now repaired, with some chipping at the edges. Displays well. According to some references on these militia rifles, these barrels with rounded muzzles were made by Lancaster maker Dickert from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Some are fitted with a bayonet lug. These militia rifles were made around the War of 1812 for service with rifle companies. The lock, brass furniture and barrel are from the original militia rifle but have been restocked in walnut on this rifle, as evidenced by the patchbox slot in the buttplate. The sideplate has the initials "CG", probably for Christopher Gumpf, a member of the Dickert De Huff group. The flat lockplate has been converted to percussion and is stamped "DREPPERT" in the center. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina, rear sight a later addition. The 3 barrel keys are absent as well as the tang screw. Lock retains a dark patina. Brass retains a mustard patina. Stock shows some minor losses and marks from use. Ramrod absent.
