US CIVIL WAR C. ROBY & CO. M1850 FOOT OFFICER'S SWORD.

Lot # 4001 (Sale Order: 1 of 490)      

A Civil War M1850 Foot Officer's Sword by Christopher Roby. The sword features double etched blade that is decorated with patriotic and foliate motifs for about half its length. The sword is maker marked using acid etching on the obverse ricasso and reads "C. Roby & co. / W. Chelmsford / Mass.". Blade exhibits areas of pitting throughout its length. Hilt is as typically encountered on M1850 swords with open scrollwork on the guard, laurel engraved pommel, and tiered cap. Grip is of wood and grooved to accommodate twisted brass wire over the shagreen wrap. Guard with pleasing patina and portions of wrap are missing on grip. Complete with leather scabbard that is missing the drag. Upper mount is loose and marked "C. ROBY & CO / W. CHELMSFORD, MASS". Mounts exhibit a light patina with blemishes. Manufactured in 1905. Features a full octagon barrel in desirable .22 LR. Sports a dovetailed front sight, rear slot filled with two barrel mounted scope blocks on which is mounted an original Winchester Model A-5 with grasshopper adjustable rear. Standard crosshair reticle is clear. Factory 2/3rds magazine, plain walnut stock with rifle buttplate, blue finish, takedown, and grooved round forearm. CONDITION: Excellent. Solid 80% bright blue on receiver with toning and handling marks. Excellent proud stock with scattered abrasions. At least 95% blue on barrel and tube with sharp Winchester barrel legend. (C) LATE WINCHESTER MODEL 90 ROUND BARREL SLIDE ACTION RIFLE IN .22 WRF.

Lot # 4004 (Sale Order: 4 of 490)      

Manufactured after 1941. Scarce full round barrel with a Model 62 Type 17 flat bottom grooved forearm and walnut stock with Winchester buttplate. The barrel has P in circle (mail order replacement), which indicates this barrel did not leave the factory on this frame but was returned/replaced. Obviously, a late parts clean up gun. Features a 23" barrel that is stamped Model 90 and in the .22 WRF caliber, late rounded crown, blue finish, 2/3 tube magazine, take down, Marble's bead and semi-buckhorn sights. Rifle has the post 690,000 serial number tang stamp. Hammer spur is checkered 3rd style. Post-1919 side Winchester barrel legend with missing (18) 90 without the gap (post 700,000 range). An interesting oddity. The Winchester book concludes that these were made after 1946. CONDITION: Excellent. Receiver retains about 85% blue turning patina at base with light handling marks. Barrel and tube are 95% with some patina and handling marks. Stocks are excellent and proud to metal. Bore is strong but lightly frosted. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection. Manufactured in 1937. Has the early checkered hammer spur with smooth trigger. Tang is factory drilled for tang sight with no tang markings, which is correct. The muzzle has post-1935 rounded crown along with pre-1939 Type 1 barrel legend. Rifle sports the 32B rear sight and the 75C front sight. Walnut butt stock has the pre-war profile with the post-1935 Winchester gutta perch black butt plate. The forearm is the early 6", 10-groove Type 1 style. Standard blue finish, takedown, 2/3rds magazine. CONDITION: Very good. Rifle retains at least 98% of the reapplied blue finish and retains strong barrel legends. Manufactured in 1953. Standard rifle with blue finish, take down, 2/3rds length magazine, flat top rear sight, dovetail front sight, deluxe grain walnut stock, Winchester black buttplate, and flat bottom grooved forearm. CONDITION: Excellent as restored. The wrist was cracked and expertly repaired. Rifle retains nearly all of the reapplied finish. Action is fine. Bore is defined but has abrasions. This is a post 1884 arsenal rebuild in which a Buffington Carbine marked sight with updated barrel band was installed and was then refinished. Features the round barrel, single barrel band, blue finish, walnut stock with no visible inspector marks and the saddle ring and bar. Barrel breech has the proof P stamp only. No eagle head. CONDITION: Excellent as rebuilt / refinished. Stock has scattered dings along with a light hairline on right side of wrist at action. Metal is a smooth homogenous dulling blue. All legends are sharp. Distinct single shot Civil War carbine, identified by the unique leather covered barrel to protect from salt water aboard ships. The vast majority of these leather covers survived in poor condition, so this one was recovered at some time. The left side of frame has the Sharps 1859 patent legend. The right side has the "Sharp & Hankins Philada." legend. All other features are standard including the brass buttplate, rear sling swivel, adjustable military rear sight, and walnut stock. CONDITION: Very good. No original finish but metal is a smooth patina with some age spotting. Wood does show some scattered light dings. The lever allows the barrel to move forward for loading. Lee single shot "Heavy Sporting Rifle" one of about approximately 1000 known to exist. Flaydermann notes that it is one of the few guns made in the west and was primarily sold to officers during the 1864-1865 production period in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. One piece octagon blue swing-out rifled barrel chambered for .38 rimfire. Original blade front sight with fixed rear sight. Case hardened action with external hammer and swing-out latch fitted with slide bar. Barrel marked on top "LEE"S FIREARM'S CO. MILWAUKEE, WIS., PAT'D JULY 22, 1862". Walnut plain stock with steel buttplate, checkered at the wrist. CONDITION: Metal parts have faded to a brown patina with light pitting near the breach face. Cold blue has been added. Wood has been cleaned and lightly sanded with oil added, still shows numerous old nicks and dings. Good mechanics. Bore is dark, but showing visible rifling. A super scarce swing breech rifle. According to Flayderman's, a contract for 5000 carbines was executed on January 2nd, 1865, with the state of Kentucky to arm the home guard to protect Sherman's supply lines to Atlanta. 3000 featured 30" barrels and 2000 had 22" barrels. The left side of frame is stamped Kentucky. These were made by the Meriden Manufacturing Co in Connecticut. Apparently, they were delivered too late to be of service. Features a round barrel, single barrel band, post front sight, military style folding ladder rear sight, and walnut stock with steel carbine buttplate and swivel. Meriden legend is found on tang and left side of receiver. The barrel twists to allow loading. CONDITION: Good.
