(C) Extraordinary Winchester Ulrich Engraved Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle.

Lot # 229 (Sale Order: 229 of 678)

Very rare special order ’94 with octagon to round barrel, half magazine, takedown, with Lyman ivory bead hunting front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight and Lyman locking combination tang sight. Mounted with triple X very highly figured, center crotch, flame grain American walnut with style “A” carved forearm, capped pistol grip stock, and smooth steel shotgun buttplate; this style of stock carving was $60 in 1897 (page 223 in the book “Winchester Engraving”). Left side of lower tang is stamped with the assembly number “1178”, “X” and “SC”. There is also a tiny “61”. The matching assembly number is on the rear face of buttstock, under the buttplate, along with “94”. Matching assembly number is also found inside toe of buttplate. Receiver is beautifully engraved in style “4” by John Ulrich and is signed on the lower tang behind the trigger. Lower tang is also engraved in period script “Millard P. Duell”. Engraving consists of a very large panel of a hunter shooting from behind a tree with two wounded bull elk in the foreground, all in a forest scene on the left side; and a grizzly bear in a mountain scene on a promontory on the right side, all surrounded by foliate arabesque patterns and wavelet borders. Top and bottom of receiver, top and bottom tangs, hammer, lever, takedown ring, forend cap, screws, buttplate tang and exposed flats of barrel over chamber area are engraved to match. Base of barrel at the receiver and around the muzzle are inlaid with gold bands. Receiver, takedown ring, forend cap and buttplate are all gold plated. Accompanied by several Winchester Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Cody Firearms Museum letters dating 1971, 1982 and 2008; all of which provide the identical information that identifies this rifle in .32 Winchester Special caliber with half octagon barrel, half magazine, plain trigger, “clover leaf rear, Lyman front, Lyman rear” sights, takedown, engraved $24.00, No. 4 and gold trim, received in warehouse March 27th, 1907 and shipped same day to Order No. 93543; repair and return on June 29th, 1917. Note: A clover leaf sight is described in The Winchester Book by Madis, as a style “28” which is a semi-buckhorn style as found on this rifle. The sight currently on this rifle is of a later vintage with smooth edges rather than the serrated edges of the 1917 era when this rifle was most likely restored. This rifle is pictured, on page 172 with three photographs, in the book “Winchester Engraving” by R.L. Wilson. The caption details mostly only the information found in the letter and states that when the rifle was returned and repaired in 1917 “at which time the inscription on lower tang was engraved”. PROVENANCE: Lloyd Goff Collection; Glenn Hockett Collection; Wes Adams Estate Collection. Very fine as restored. Overall retains about all of a factory restored finish to both metal and wood; barrel and magazine tube retain 97-98% strong, factory reapplied blue with only light muzzle and sharp edge wear; receiver, takedown ring, forend cap and buttplate retain most of their strong gold plating with some light flaking on top edges of the receiver; lever and hammer retain brilliant case colors; wood is sound with a few very minor nicks and scratches and retains about all of its fine restored finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore.Accessories: NoneBarrel Length: 26"Caliber/Bore: .32 Winchester SpecialManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1894Paperwork: YesSerial Number: 308993 Condition: Dimensions: CORRECTION:This rifle was sold on March 28, 2007, lot 886.Little Johns Auction. (A) Rare Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet.

Lot # 230 (Sale Order: 230 of 678)

Manufactured 1893. This rare musket is part of a group of an entire collection of Winchester muskets dating from 1866 to 1895 that took the consigner nearly 50 years to complete. This is the second rarest of all Winchester muskets behind the trial Model 1894. In a Winchester letter dated 1976, Serial No. 82373 musket in caliber .45-70 was shipped on September 15th, 1893 with ten other muskets; barrel lengths not listed. It is two numbers off the one pictured in "The Winchester Book" by Madis. According to a hand-written letter about private research done within the records, 372 total muskets were ever made, all noted with 32" barrels, although Serial No. 82373 (this gun) and 82375 both have 30" barrels. It must be assumed that the 11 muskets shipped together were the majority of the 30" barrels sent. Gun features single barrel band with swivel, forend tip, post front sight, military rear sight, carbine buttplate with trapdoor, rear swivel in stock, blued bolt and loading gate, and case colored frame, lever, hammer and buttplate with full length walnut forend and buttstock. 85% original factory blue on barrel. Fire blue on screws and base of sight. Sharp legends. 95% blue on bolt. Traces of color on frame and lever. Generous color on hammer. Buttplate is grey. Stock is excellent with minor impressions. Strong, clean, near mint bore. The bottom of the frame is hand stamped "CERION" (origin unknown). The serial numbers of the 11 muskets is listed on the factory letter; all were shipped on September 15th, 1893. Again, this is one of the great rarities of Winchester collecting and one could look a lifetime for another example. Comes with an original socket bayonet in the white.Accessories: BayonetBarrel Length: 30"Caliber/Bore: .45-70FFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1886 MusketPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 82373 Condition: Dimensions:

(C) Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Musket - The Rarest of All Winchester Muskets.

Lot # 231 (Sale Order: 231 of 678)

Serial No. 418972 was applied at the factory on October 14th, 1908. This rare musket is part of a group of an entire collection of Winchester muskets dating from 1866 to 1895 that took the consigner nearly 50 years to complete. This musket features three barrel bands, extended magazine, post front sight, military rear sight, blued finish, full length walnut forend, sling swivels, walnut carbine buttstock and carbine buttplate. The condition of this rare trial musket is phenomenal; barrel retains approximately 98% original factory blue, as does tube; 95% blue on front band; 80% blue on the rear two bands starting to patina; 95% bright blue on both sides of frame, patina on bottom; 80% bright blue on loading gate; fire blue on rear sight spring; traces of case colors on lever; 80% original blue on buttplate. Stock is near mint with raised grain. Fine action and near mint bore. Comes with angular bayonet. Impossible Model 1894 Musket and one of two known to have been produced for socket bayonet. According to information found on page 53 of the book “Winchester Model 94 2nd Edition” by Renneberg, there were only “five true musket examples: all were produced experimentally and all were originally in the Winchester Museum Reference Collection.” He states that not all five are thought to have survived. He also states that there were two bayonet designs used, the saber type and the socket type as found on this musket. This musket, along with three other muskets are listed, by serial number, in the “Inventory of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company Firearms Reference Collection”, E. Pugsley, et al. Manufactured in 1908. Two of the other muskets are listed with 26" barrels and the third musket barrel length is not listed and all three are indicated as being fitted for saber bayonets. This musket is one of the two remaining muskets made with “angular” (socket) bayonet. The other socket bayonet rifle sold at Julia’s in 2013, neither had a trapdoor. Accompanied by an original socket bayonet of the Winchester Model 1873 style with 18-1/2" triangular bayonet and standard socket with locking ring. If one was to try and complete a collection of Winchester muskets, this would have to be considered the Holy Grail as it is one of only two examples currently known to the hobby. The other musket that sold in 2013 went for $43,125.00. This musket, along with the others in this collection, is the first time a complete collection of muskets has been offered for sale at one time in one place, and this is obviously the rare key to any musket collection. To say it would be hard to improve upon condition would really make no difference, given there aren’t any others to buy. Possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity.Accessories: NoneBarrel Length: 30"Caliber/Bore: .30-30 WCFFFL Status: Curio & RelicManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1894 MusketPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 418972 Condition: Dimensions:

(A) Rare Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet.

Lot # 232 (Sale Order: 232 of 678)

This musket was received in warehouse August 22nd, 1878 and shipped on August 19th, 1882. This rare musket is part of a group of an entire collection of Winchester muskets dating from 1866 to 1895 that took the consigner nearly 50 years to complete. Another great rarity in Winchester collecting in the 1876 full length musket. The majority of known examples were sent to the Civil Guard of Hawaii. This has several small differences and is not a Hawaiian Civil Guard rifle. The wiping rod, located on the left side of forend, is not a feature of all 1876 muskets as some were produced without this option. Rifle has post front sight, military rear sight, address stamp on top, two bands, rod on side, two sling swivels, blued finish, and walnut stocks with carbine buttplate. No trapdoor. The front barrel band has saber bayonet lug located on right side. Barrel and bands are a pleasing mix of blue with soft patina and sharp legends. The frame is basically a blue-brown patina with gun metal grey around edges. Caliber is not marked. Wood is very good to excellent, very dark with usual dings. Fine action. Strong, clean bore. Comes with a saber bayonet and leather sheath. Determining value is extremely difficult as there are only a few recorded sales of these muskets on the open market and, like a few others, are simply never seen.Accessories: BayonetBarrel Length: 32"Caliber/Bore: .45-75FFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1876 MusketPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 5067 Condition: Dimensions:

As with most existing 1892 muskets, it is believed the bulk were for foreign orders, in this case the rifle made its way through England to La Paz, Bolivia. All metal is a pleasing blue-grey soft homogeneous patina with no pitting. 80% blue on loading gate. Walnut stocks are excellent. Strong, clean, near mint bore. While the 1892 is not the rarest musket, all muskets with the exception of 1866, 1873 and 1895 are scarce to impossible and rarely seen for sale, making it very difficult to estimate value as very few can be found having been sold, especially in such fine original, untouched condition as most collectors know Winchester rifles bound for foreign lands seldom surface in any condition at all.Accessories: NoBarrel Length: 30"Caliber/Bore: .44-40 WCFFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1892 MusketPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 83663 Condition: Dimensions:

(A) High Condition Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Musket.

Lot # 236 (Sale Order: 236 of 678)

Manufactured 1897. This rare musket is part of a group of an entire collection of Winchester muskets dating from 1866 to 1895 that took the consigner nearly 50 years to complete. Winchester desperately tried to get a U.S. contract for the 1895 musket. Tens of thousands of muskets were made for foreign countries in non-American calibers but it was General Miles that placed an order for 10,000 muskets from Winchester in May of 1898 as the demand for arms was heavy due to the Spanish American war. When the parts and muskets had been inspected by the army at the Winchester factory, a large number were rejected for unsubstantial reasons. After discussion, the 10,000 passed inspection. In 1899, 100 were issued in the Philippines but the Ordnance board gave them an unfavorable report and the 100 muskets were returned to the United States and sold to a Boston arms dealer. The remaining 9,900 were sold to a New York dealer who sold them to Cuba in 1906. All of these arms were marked "U.S.". Civilian orders were manufactured in .30 Army and .303 British. It is unknown how many civilian muskets were manufactured for the retail trade but the number had to be very small, and one could search for years for a non-military stamped model. The NRA adopted some 40 muskets, made to comply with club rules, and a few were offered with 24" barrels in .30-03 and .30-06. The .30-40 Krag Models were manufactured with standard 30". This is the first 28" barrel retail Model 1895 musket that we have seen. Efforts to research other models on the market proved unsuccessful, further proving the rarity of this model. Civilian model muskets exhibited several differences with their military counterparts. This rifle remains in nearly new unfired condition with 99% blue on barrel, 98% blue on magazine with touch of wear, 90% blue on frame balance towards rear simply flaked, 100% blue on bolt, 100% Nitre blue on extractor and base of rear sight. Some thinning of finish on bottom of lever and magazine. 75% blue on buttplate; thinning on top and bottom. Rifle is equipped with three sling swivels, two bands and bottom bayonet lug on front band. Near mint bore and Fine action. This is an early post-flatside musket. It was impossible to determine total civilian sale muskets but it is rare as we can find no record of any other examples being sold.Accessories: NoBarrel Length: 28"Caliber/Bore: .30-40 Krag FFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1895 MusketPaperwork: No Serial Number: 7159 CORRECTION: The serial number is 7159.

Standard features include round barrel, full magazine, twin bands, post front sight, folding ladder rear sight, blued finish, case colored hammer and trigger, walnut stock, carbine butt, rear-only sling swivel and saddle ring with stud. This carbine has seen very little use as evidenced by the 100% intact Nitre blue loading gate, which shows literally no wear but one thin pencil-dot silver spot. Barrel and tube retain 99% of the original factory blue finish with razor sharp legends. Barrel bands retain 95% original blue with just minor high edge wear. Brilliant case colors on hammer. Traces of case colors on lever, balance patterned out. 85% original factory blue on buttplate with wear at high spots. Razor sharp legends. A large percentage of these scarce carbines were shipped to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Barrel retains 98% of the original factory blue with just some light age freckling. Overall, the frame also retains 85-90% of its original high polish blue finish with some naturally aged patina coming through the blue finish. The fire blued loading gate shows literally no wear retaining its brilliant color. Dust cover retains approximately 85-90% blue with some patina showing through. Brilliant case colors on hammer. Traces of case color on lever blending with dull grey appearance. Buttplate is a soft brown-grey patina. Barrel band retains 50% original blue. Nose cap has 20% blue with balance toned. All screw heads are near mint and untouched. Left side of barrel and top of chamber bear the British proof marks. Walnut stock and nearly full length forend are excellent, proud to metal, no cracks or chips, with a few of the usual bruises. Left side of stock has a small "59X" professionally stamped in center (British unit?). The brass lifter retains its rich, yellow untouched appearance and is stamped ".45-75", the second largest caliber offered in this rifle, behind the "Big .50". Fine action.
