(A) Incredible High Condition Cased Winchester Henry Lever Action Rifle.

Lot # 254 (Sale Order: 254 of 678)

Manufactured 1862. There are Henry's and then again there are Henry's! When putting together a collection of every lever action Winchester, the Holy Grail and bedrock of that collection has been, and always will be, the Henry rifle. The adage has been that since the Henry is the bedrock of your lever action collection, it was the condition of your Henry that defined the balance of the lever guns. While it is true that finding a Henry is not the real issue in collecting, it is finding a 100% clean, untouched, unmessed with example that still has condition and has never been altered in any way or sense. This is such an example. There was a time when Winchester was as concerned with aesthetics as the English gunmakers. Both tang screws and the buttplate screw were perfectly set to line up at 12 o'clock. The balance of the screws on this gun are near perfect and not deformed which would indicate that this gun has never been apart since it left the factory. The octagon barrel top flat has the early small address. The magazine spring is perfectly formed with no distortion. American walnut stock has the early abrupt comb and perch belly shape with the regular varnish finish. Rifle is equipped with factory swivel on right side that rides 2 - 1/2" from top to dead center; referred to as a low swivel with no visible bump and is scarcer on the right side than the left. It has the early style rounded heel brass buttplate with loading gate (no cleaning rod). All stock screws are hand fitted to the contour of the brass receiver tang and buttplate. The nickel silver front sight is the early half moon profile rounded on both front and rear, and can be seen on page 120 in the book "The Henry Rifle" by Les Quick. The rear sight is the earliest type, referred to as Type A, as seen on page 122, with the horizontal sliding bar graduated to 1,000 yards; this sight is located at the rear sight slot in barrel. A factory additional sight slot can be found on frame as well with no sight and no sign that any sight has been in or out of this slot. The lower tang screw, lower frame screws, left frame screws, upper tang screws and buttplate screws have generous amounts of the early high polish Nitre blue finish. The standard barrel finish was a highly polished bright blue; this original finish has turned to a soft blue-brown homogeneous patina with flashes of bright blue along recesses with some minor age spotting, sharp octagon edges and a perfect barrel legend. The bolt is basically gun metal grey patina and the insides, as visible through the top, are extremely clean with sharp edges and no molestation. Rear bolt still has original blue finish. Factory case colored hammer and lever are basically a brown-grey patina. The brass has sharp edges, virtually free of marring with the exception of some small storage marks. Sideplates show no pry marks. Walnut stock is excellent, proud to metal, does not appear to have ever been removed, with the usual minor abrasions and still retaining the majority of its original factory stock finish. We are aware that there are numerous internal parts numbers on this rifle but given the pristine condition of the screws and fit, we have decided not to disassemble as is normally done, as it is obvious by its present condition that it has never been altered in any way and is guaranteed to be just as it left the factory. The action and loading spring work correctly and the strong, clean, bright rifling is devoid of any pitting or abrasions, making this the strongest example of a high condition Henry we have ever examined. To compliment this fine Henry rifle, it is housed in one of the rare surviving walnut factory display cases. An exact example of this case can be found on page 92 in the book "Volcanic Firearms" by Lewis and Rutter. Given that no photographs of cases are in the Henry Book, one could surmise that these cases were made for the Volcanic and early Henry production, and are never seen on the open market. The walnut case is lined with red velvet and the partitions are identical to the example on page 92, which would allow for the rifle, three full boxes of ammunition, a cleaning rod and sundry accessories. Features four brass hinges and is secured at the front by two swivel locks and center key lock. The lining is in exceptional condition for its age, showing usual wear where the outline of the gun is still visible on the lid lining showing where a Henry rifle has rested for years leaving its indelible outline into the velvet surface. The walnut case itself was refinished at one time, nicely done and is free of cracks. The last addition to this cased set is a full sealed box of Remington UMC .44 Henry flat (50) rimfire cartridges with green label, sealed on all four sides, and bottom label with guarantee and lot number and has been wrapped for protection. Overall, one of the finest existing standard early commercial Henry rifles extant in fine original walnut di

(A) Cased Deluxe Factory Engraved Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Boxlock Shotgun with 2 Barrels.

Lot # 255 (Sale Order: 255 of 678)

Colt's Model 1883 shotgun was one of the finest products manufactured in the firm's long history with a total of 7,360 manufactured. It was best quality all the way. The 1890 catalog stated this gun was made of the best materials and workmanship, and equal to the most costly and best English sporting gun. The parts are simple, strong and few in number. U.S. President Grover Cleveland received two of these guns in 8 gauge. Features a hammerless boxlock action, standard ejectors, the finest Belgian made Damascus patterns finished in brown, deluxe walnut stocks, finely checkered, ebony forend tips, pistol grip cap, double set triggers, top safety, case colored frame (traces remain). Has two complete matching sets of barrels and forends, all numbered to gun. Complete engraving on frame and trigger guard in scroll pattern with duck on trigger guard and pointer and pheasants on right and left sides. Wood is excellent to near mint with original finish and nice checkering. Buttplate has been replaced with solid black plate that deserves a red English style rubber buttpad. Both forend stocks are excellent and features Deeley release. Both barrels have matted ribs, single bead and doll head lock. Mirror bores and tight as new lock-up. Gun was shipped on January 30th, 1897; one gun to Gibson & Woodworth. It is odd that the factory letter does not mention the 26" barrels, nor does it mention engraving. This is obviously a higher grade gun with presentation plaque on butt. These were expensive guns, even on their introduction, with engraving alone costing $125. Record of engraving found under Cuno Helfricht, Huge Reuss, and the Young Brothers. Both barrels are numbered "2" underneath, and an identical font is found on all serial numbers, with serifs. A similar style of tang engraving on 1883 listed as Helfricht can be found on page 355 of the "Colt Engraving" book, which shows the top tang area. Similar pointer and pheasant engraving is found on page 348, which shows the left panel and bottom frame of the H.S. Kearney gun; shows nearly identical patterns and patterns of scroll engraving at base, Serial No. 7654. The pattern of checkering is identical on both of the matching forearms. Barrels are dent-free and have a true ring, no signs of any solder repairs. We believe this to be Helfricht engraved based on the patterns and the quality of engraving. One of the most beautiful, deluxe 1883 Hammerless Colts we have seen. Comes in a monogrammed leather luggage case with brass buckles that needs a new handle a strap. Mirror bores and locks up tight as new. An extremely fine and rare Helfricht engraved complete two barrel cased set that with the addition of a proper English style red pad would be a show-stopper in any collection.Accessories: Case, Extra BarrelBarrel Length: (A) 28" (B) 26"Chamber : 2 - 5/8"Choke: Modified ImprovedFFL Status: AntiqueGauge: 12 BoreManufacturer: ColtModel: 1883 HammerlessPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 7370 Condition: Dimensions:

(A) High Condition Winchester Model 1887 Lever Action Shotgun.

Lot # 256 (Sale Order: 256 of 678)

Manufactured 1888; second year production. Factory letter states Serial No. 16724 was shipped on July 17th, 1888 as a 12 gauge shogun with 32" barrel. One would generally assume this would be full choke; the barrel currently measures 30 - 1/16" and measures out as improved modified with reblued barrels. There is a repair and return order dated November 4th, 1902, but there is no detail as to work performed; was the barrel shortened and reblued on November 4th? This cannot be determined. The case colors are original, which would indicate the gun was in fine condition when sent for repair. Rarely do you see these lever action shotguns with any amount of finish; the blue has usually turned brown and the case colors are nearly always turned nickel. This example is superb. The barrel and tube retain approximately 90% reapplied blue, just starting to let some patina show through. Walnut stock with round knob is excellent to near mint with beautiful finish. The blued steel shotgun buttplate retains 80% original blue. Frame shows almost 90% color and pattern, albeit not bright, but nearly complete coverage on sides. Action is like new. Fine, shiny bore. One of the nicer examples of this model condition-wise that you will find.Accessories: NoneBarrel Length: 30"Chamber : 2 - 5/8"Choke: Improved CylinderFFL Status: AntiqueGauge: 12Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1887Paperwork: NoSerial Number: 16724 Condition: Dimensions:
