(A) Extremely Fine Winchester Model 1873 Heavy Barrel Lever Action Rifle.

Lot # 202 (Sale Order: 202 of 678)      

Manufactured 1883. Features full heavy round barrel, full magazine, Rocky Mountain blade front sight, Winchester semi-buckhorn rear sight, blued finish, brass carrier, case colored hammer and lever, rifle butt and varnished walnut stocks. This rifle has survived in all original configuration with lots of finish. Barrel and tube retain 90% original factory blue drifting with soft patina for a very even, homogenous look. Left side of frame has approximately 40% of the original factory bright blue with balance blending. Right side of frame has approximately 30% original bright blue. 80% Nitre blue on loading gate. Hammer and lever have patterned out to soft grey. Walnut stocks are excellent and proud to metal with some usual dings but still retaining much varnish. Buttplate is soft patina. Sharp legends. Action is fine. Strong rifling present. Factory research included. Far above average and a very nice example of an iconic Western firearm. Barrel retains approximately 75% blue mixing evenly with soft patina. Tube is basically brown patina. The deluxe stocks are very good to excellent with beautiful grain. Checkering shows wear. (A) High Condition Deluxe Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle (.25-35).

Factory letters states that rifle No. 12962 was shipped from the warehouse on July 31st, 1896 with a round barrel, set trigger, checkered stock, shotgun butt, takedown and in caliber .25-35 WCF. There is a remark on the letter "This buttplate needs rubber cushion buttplate." It currently sports a typical steel checkered buttplate. Also has sling eyes not mentioned in letter. There is a pin in frame top rear that goes through the receiver that was obviously installed for an over the frame peep sight of some sort. Has standard sporting sights. Rifle remains in beautiful condition. Barrel and tube retain approximately 95% bright factory blue, browning a bit at muzzle and very little takedown wear on tube. Forend cap has 85% original blue. Frame retains approximately 90% original bright factory blue, including takedown ring which usually flakes white almost immediately. Loading gate has 75% of the Nitre blue finish. Bolt has 95% original blue finish. Generous case colors on hammer and lever, some bright. Straight grip walnut checkered stock chows beautiful grain, is prod to metal with no cracks or chips and retains most of the original finish with sharp checkering. Just usual dings and light wear. Fine bore and action. Factory letter states that rifle Serial No. 30190 was shipped on July 9th, 1878 with a full octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered straight grip stock, factory sling swivels and in full factory nickel finish which includes all metal parts with the exception of the fire blue rear sight elevator. All legends are sharp as new. As usual, the nickel plating shows areas of brown spotting as the nickel flaked or bubbled; still retains at least 85% of this rare factory finish. Has the early Second Model recessed thumbprint dustcover on screwed-in rail and there are no caliber markings as the .44-40 was the only available caliber at this time. The Second Model 1873 bears the distinction of having the shortest production run of all three models. Wood is excellent with dark fiery grain on both sides of stock and razor sharp checkering. Fine action. Strong, near mint bore. This little beauty was manufactured in 1877 and has seen very little use having been well taken care of. Features full round barrel, full magazine, twin barrel bands (front band with integral front sight), brass frame, brass carbine style buttplate with trapdoor, saddle ring, folding leaf rear sight and walnut stocks. The barrel and tube show generous amounts of original factory blue with the barrel starting to lightly thin at breech and mixing with a soft patina. Loading gate retains 70% of the original high polish blue. Lever and hammer case colors have basically turned a soft patina. Stocks are very good to excellent with just some minor bumps and the majority of the varnish intact, proud to metal, with no cracks. Brass is untouched, dark mustard with traces of verdigris. Sharp screws with light marring. Fine action and a clean, strong bore. This early little carbine remains in untouched original condition and one of the finer examples that you will find. Factory research states this rifle was shipped October 7th, 1905 as a .30 caliber rifle with half octagon 22" barrel, extra light, with plain trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, Lyman front and rear sights, rubber shotgun butt, takedown and 3/4 magazine. Lyman front sight has been replaced with a King blade. The rear sight is a two leaf express folding sight. Tang sight added. Otherwise, all specifications on letter match rifle. Barrel and magazine tube retain 85% original blue; balance simply thinning to a grey-blue, giving a much higher percentage appearance. Takedown ring is gun metal grey. Frame retains approximately 85% bright Winchester blue, thinning at base from carry. Lever and hammer are basically gun metal grey with no visible color. Stock is excellent to near mint, proud to metal, with extra fancy finish, sharp checkering, black composite Winchester cap and plate; and extra fancy crotch pattern on right side. 98% bolt blue. 75% Nitre blue on loading gate.
