(A) Civil War Era Whitworth B Series .451 Hexagonal Bore Sharpshooters or Target Rifle.

Lot # 361 (Sale Order: 357 of 399)

During the Civil War, long range sniping came to its fore. The Confederate Army had ordered approximately 250 Whitworth rifles, at a cost of $1,000 in gold per rifle with 1,000 rounds of ammunition each. Many of these documented Confederate "sniper" used rifles were outfitted with a Davidson telescopic sight and were of "2nd Quality" with 2 barrel bands. It has been noted that Union General Sedgwick fell victim to a head shot from a sniper using a Whitworth rifle on May 8, 1864. Shortly before General Sedgwick was killed he scolded some of his men for ducking gun fire, telling them that "they couldn't hit an elephant at this distance.". This particular gun is of the same general style as those used during the Civil War by Confederate sharpshooters, to great effect. 3 band configuration with minimal line engraving around the lock, undoubtedly made for use as a military rifle. No provision for a bayonet. Sling swivel on the front band and at the rear of the triggerguard tang. Checkered fore and aft. Matching numbers on barrel and triggerguard. Hexagonal bore with original correct ramrod. There is a lock mounted hammer safety. Crown over "W" on the rear of the lock, marked "WHITWORTH" towards the front of the lock above the safety. "WHITWORTH PATENT" on the top of the barrel, along with the standard "52" Birmingham commercial proofs and serial number. "BEST" is engraved on the triggerguard tang between the 2 screws. There is a piece of metal, most likely for a nipple protector with split ring and chain, mounted under the front of the triggerguard which appears to be a contemporary add on. The target adjustable front sight and possibly the wrist mounted Vernier rear sight are of a newer vintage. The wrist mounted Vernier sight does show age to it. The barrel mounted rear sight ladder is very plain but appears to have been on this gun for a very long time. Stamped into the bottom of the stock between the front of the triggerguard and forend checkering is "NATCHEZ". The tops of the letters are worn, and bottoms of the letters are sharp. Looks to have been there for very long time, meaning unknown. CONDITION: Very good with approximately 40% original case colors on breech plug. 10% faded case colors on the lock. Barrel has about 10-15% original brown near the breech, mixed with an even age patina and some very minor pitting. There is a fair amount of original blue on the rear and middle bands. All markings are clear and sharp. Wood is very good with dings and handling marks consistent with age, original untouched checkering is sharp. The buttplate has some pitting, mostly towards the top screw. Ramrod has light pitting. Action is crisp. The bore is dirty with distinct rifling showing some wear. Barrel Length: 33" Caliber/Bore: .451 FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Whitworth Model: B series Paperwork: No Serial Number: B678

(A) Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Attributed to Chief Rain-in-the-Face.

Lot # 363 (Sale Order: 359 of 399)

Winchester Model 1873 .44-40 Lever Action Rifle, Serial Number #487, photograph attributed to the Lakota - Sioux Chief Rain-In-The-Face. Manufactured in 1874 with Winchester letter. Showing his worth as a warrior early on in life, the Indian known as Ito-na-gaju earned his Hunkpapa name of Rain-in-the-Face after several fights where the blood and war paint looked like rain on his face. While he did lead several inter-Indian raids, Chief Rain-in-the-Face first fought against the whites in the summer of 1866 when he participated in a raid against Fort Totten in what is now North Dakota. In December 1866, he participated in the Fetterman Massacre near Fort Phil Kearny in present-day Wyoming. In 1873, he took part in the Battle of Honsinger Bluff where he first encountered George Custer. Rain-in-the-Face led five warriors on an ambush and killed Dr. John Honsinger, an army veterinarian, and a sutler named Augustus Baliran who were accompanying Custer's cavalry near the Tongue River, Montana. He then returned to the Standing Rock Reservation where he lived for a period of time. Late in 1873, a scout named Charley Reynolds visited the Standing Rock Agency when he heard Rain-in-the-Face boasting about his participation in the ambush. When Reynolds reported what he had learned, General George Custer ordered Rain-in-the-Face arrested and dispatched his younger brother, Captain Thomas Custer, to perform the deed. Thomas Custer took Rain-in-the-Face to Fort Abraham Lincoln and incarcerated him. However, Rain-in-the-Face escaped and returned to the reservation, then fled to the Powder River country. In the spring of 1876, he joined Sitting Bull's band and traveled with him to the Little Big Horn River in early June. During the subsequent fighting at the Battle of Little Big Horn on Custer Hill on June 25, 1876, Rain-in- the-Face is alleged to have cut the heart out of Thomas Custer, a feat that was popularized by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in "The Revenge of Rain-in-the-Face." According to legend, Rain-in-the-Face was fulfilling a vow of vengeance because he felt Captain Thomas Custer had unjustly imprisoned him in 1874. Some contemporary accounts also claimed that the war chief had personally dispatched George Custer as well, but in the confused fighting, a number of similar claims have been attributed to other warriors. Late in his life, in a conversation with writer Charles Eastman, Rain-in-the-Face denied both the killing of George Custer and the mutilation of Tom Custer. After the Battle of Little Big Horn, Rain-in-the-Face joined other Hunkpapa as they fled north into Canada, spending the next several years in exile. He finally led his band to surrender in 1880 at Fort Keogh, Montana, and the following year was transferred to the Standing Rock Agency, Dakota Territory, where he later became a reservation police officer and lived the rest of his life. Rain-in-the-Face died in 1905 in his home at the Bullhead Station on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota after a lengthy illness. On his deathbed he reputedly confessed to Mary Collins, a famous Indian missionary, that he thought that he might have killed Custer, shooting him from so close as to leave powder marks upon his face. Between 1878 and 1883, David Frances Barry, referred to by Indians as “The Little Shadow Catcher,” traveled to Fort Buford, Fort Yates, and other forts in the Dakota Territory. He went as far north as Fort Assiniboine in Montana. For these trips he used a portable photographic studio in which he took most of his portraits. He photographed famous Native American chiefs, warriors, scouts, and women including Sitting Bull, Rain-in-the-Face, Gall, Red Cloud, and Shooting Star. You can look at dozens of photographs of Indian Chiefs and warriors photographed by Barry online, but few, if any, have Barry in the photograph. However, two of the photos Barry took of Chief Rain-in-the-Face feature Barry standing with his friend. These two photos accompany this lot, along with a piece written by Barry about his friend, Chief Rain- in-the-Face. All of the writing on the photos matches Barry’s hand. The first photo has “Chief Rain In the Face and DF Barry” with his photography stamp on the back. The second, in the album, has “D.F. Barry and his friend, Rain In The Face, the Noted Sioux Chief.” Click here to see the full description.

Cal. 44 RF. Fine early ’66 with 24 inch ocagon barrel, German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight and Henry style 900 yard ladder rear sight. It has full magazine tub...moree with one magazine band and is mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered, slab-sawed American walnut with straight stock and matching engraved crescent buttplate with trap. Bottom of buttstock has a sling swivel and the forend cap has a factory sling swivel. Top tang channel of buttstock is stamped with a SN all of which is obliterated except the last number which is a “5” which corresponds to the last digit of this rifle’s serial number. Inside toe of buttplate has the last four digits of this rifle’s serial number. Left side of lower tang, under the wood, is stamped “VV”. Rifle is beautifully engraved in the style of Conrad Ulrich and is similar to Winchester 1866 rifle SN 112272 as pictured in full color on p. 154 of Winchester Engraving, Wilson. While the engraving patterns are similar to those by Mr. Ulrich it is believed they are by another skilled engraver whether in the 19th or 20th century is unknown. Engraving consists of nine deep relief vignettes. Left side has a large vignette of a standing bull elk with a reclining cow & calf; a hunter with rifle and a walking bull elk in a forest scene. Right side has three additional vignettes consisting of a bull & cow elk in a forest scene, a bird dog and the goddess Diana with hunting dog. There are three small relief engraved vignettes, two at the top rear edge of the receiver of a squirrel and a hawk with a snarling dog over the top front of the receiver. The entire remainder of the receiver has full coverage intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with fine punch dot background and two small diamond & dot patterns. Both sides of the rear side panels have a hunting dog & hare over foliate patterns. There are various border patterns throughout the engraving.
