(A) 1st Year Winchester Model 1866 Flatside Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine.

Lot # 380 (Sale Order: 376 of 399)

Very fine and original 1st year production Winchester 1866 Flatside Saddle Ring Carbine Manufactured in 1866 while the Henry rifle was still in production. Winchester 1866 Flatside Saddle Ring Carbine with 20 inch round barrel with barrel band front sight and first model 500 yard marked carbine rear sight. Henry's Patent two line barrel address. Gun metal brass frame with serial number on left side of lower tang. Distinctive early flat loading gate. Two piece American walnut stocks with brass crescent butt plate. Butt stock is numbers matching with number found in upper tang mortise. Butt plate is properly numbered as number is struck internally at toe. Three piece steel cleaning rod is present in butt trap. These very first Winchesters where manufactured in conjunction with the 1860 Henry rifle and share several similarities and are serial numbered in continuation of the Henry rifle. The butt stock has the famed "Henry Bump" on the lower left hand side of the stock. Internally numbered on the tang, stock and butt plate and of course still chambered for the .44 Rim Fire cartridges. CONDITION. Fine overall, The barrel and magazine have turned dove grey from use and age and a additional contemporary blue finish has been added with about a 20% coverage remaining. The Gun metal brass frame has a very mellow mustard coloring and the side plates show no evidence of having ever been removed. The two piece stocks are exceptionally fine for a flatside, they are full sized and retain most of the factory applied varnish. Numerous bruises and scratches are evident but no material loss or cracks. The bore is very good with some darkness but has very strong rifling and is mostly bright. All screws remain original. A very fine example of Winchesters earliest production carbine. TDW Barrel Length: 20" Caliber/Bore: .44 RF FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 Paperwork: Yes Serial Number: 13729

(A) SCARCE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 SOLD TO ARAPAHOE COUNTY, COLORADO.

Lot # 398 (Sale Order: 394 of 399)

Cal. 40-82. Standard grade rifle with 26" rnd bbl, full magazine, half nickel front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. Left side of the color case hardened receiver is engraved in period script “Arapahoe County”. Mounted with very nicely figured, slab-sawed, uncheckered American walnut with straight stock & crescent buttplate. Other ’86 rifles engraved with the identical inscription were shipped from Winchester July 14, 1894. A 7-page article by Rick Wilson, which appeared in The Winchester Repeater, the magazine of the Winchester Arms Collectors Association, discussed information about two rifles from Arapahoe County, Colorado similar to this rifle. The number of rifles ordered by the Arapahoe County Sheriff in 1894 is unknown at this time. However, what is known is that Sheriff William Burchinell, in office 1891-1895, ordered a number of 1886 rifles, so inscribed, to defend the Arapahoe County Courthouse against an anticipated attack by the then Gov. Waite who was attempting to dismiss some of his appointees. The employees of City Hall turned the building into an armed fortress and the Governor then called out the National Guard, armed with Gatling guns & field cannons, but backed down in the face of the citizens’ resistance. Two of those 1886s, apparently ordered at the same time, were inscribed to “John C. Twombly”, an Arapahoe County Commissioner, and the other “William K. Burchinell”, the aforementioned sheriff. These Arapahoe County rifles apparently saw little, if any, service and are usually encountered with high orig finish. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains 95% thin orig blue showing wear over the forearm area and left side with a couple of dings near the magazine band; magazine retains about 95% strong orig blue; receiver retains bright case colors on sides, lightly to moderately faded; thin colors over the top and turned silver on the belly; hammer retains strong case colors on sides & rear edge, turned silver on top; lever retains strong case colors on sides, nearly faded to silver on outer faces; buttplate & forend cap are a silver patina. Stocks are sound and retain about all of a restored finish being proud and well fitting. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. This rare musket was 1 of a shipment sold to the state of Louisiana to arm a regiment of local militia in New Orleans, mostly “colored” troops, known as the Metropolitans. The incidents that precipitated the Battle of Canal Street (Battle of Liberty Place) began with the elections of Nov 4, 1872 when Democrat John McEnery, Governor, and D.B. Penn, Lt Governor, had apparently received the majority of votes, but their Republican opponents William Pitt Kellogg, Governor, and C.C. Antoine, Lt. Governor, illegally had the votes “thrown out” and Kellogg’s ticket was declared elected. The McEnery ticket declared themselves as having been elected and set up a shadow government nearby and both McEnery and Kellogg tickets were inaugurated Jan 14, 1873. The two governments continued operating, constantly waging publicity & newspaper battles which ultimately reached a climax on Sept 14, 1874 with the Battle of Canal Street. The Kellogg faction was supported by the Louisiana State Militia, armed with Winchester muskets and the New Orleans police. The McEnery faction was supported by an organization known as the White League composed of former Civil War soldiers and local citizens. The White League attacked the State House and other buildings occupied by the Militia and police. Over the course of the day the “Leagers” were victorious and occupied the State House. During the Battle of Canal Street approximately 300 of the Winchester muskets were captured by the attacking Leagers when they defending Militia dropped their arms and fled. The McEnery faction occupied the state house for 3 days until President Grant threatened to send in the Army to restore order. Gov. Kellogg resumed his position as Gov. and served out his term. An advertisement that appeared in the newspaper, Picayune on Oct 31, 1874, over the signature of Gov. Kellogg advertised a reward for the return of a large number and variety of “Stolen State arms” ranging from Mountain Howitzers and including 301 Winchester rifles, SN’s ranging between 31,120 and 34,163 marked “LSM on butt-plates”. Very few of these rare muskets have ever surfaced making them a very scarce Winchester collectible. CONDITION: Fine, all matching including buttstock & buttplate. Bbl retains traces of blue in the most sheltered areas, being an overall blue/gray patina. Magazine tube retains about 75% orig blue with a few scattered spots of light pitting. Receiver & side plates show moderate edge wear with a few light nicks & scratches and overall retains a beautiful medium mustard patina. Buttplate is matching patina. Wood is sound and shows most of a very old restored finish. Mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with fine pitting in the grooves.TDW Barrel Length: 27" Caliber/Bore: .44 RF Henry FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 Musket Paperwork: Yes Serial Number: 33351

Rare War of 1812 British Congreve System Flintlock Rocket Launcher.

Lot # 403 (Sale Order: 399 of 399)

This is an extremely rare War of 1812 period British military rocket launcher. This would have been used in conjunction with the British Congreve pole mounted rockets which would in theory slide down inside this item. Mounted on a hollow iron pole to allow for the wooden pole of the Congreve rocket. Measures 99 1/4 inches long overall. Angular bayonet affixed to the launcher cup. There is a trigger mechanism approximately halfway up the pole. The bayonet measures 8 inches long. Cup is 16 inches long. The 5 inch long lock has a crown/broad arrow mark. Approximately 2 inch bore diameter, although the cup is slightly out of round. Consignor notes that this is 1 of 100 produced. The initial rocket cases were constructed of cardboard, but by 1806 they were made from sheet iron. The propulsion was of the same ingredients as gunpowder, the mixture of which varied with the different sizes of rocket. The warheads had side-mounted brackets which were used to attach wooden sticks of differing lengths, according to the sizes of rocket. It was the use of ship-launched Congreve rockets by the British in the bombardment of Fort McHenry in the US in 1814 that inspired the fifth line of the first verse of the United States' National Anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner": "and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air". While this is certainly not a ships weapon, it would make sense as weapon to be used on horseback and could have very well been with the 1st Rocket Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery. PROVENANCE: Former Ratner Collection, Former Chernoff Collection, The Renowned Collection of Howard Resnick. CONDITION: The pole, cup, firing mechanism, and bayonet all retain a very uniform patina with light to moderate pitting and some black painted finish. The lock and wood surrounding it are in better condition, but also show age. The mainspring is missing from the lock. Serial Number: NSN
