(C) Rare Documented Nickel Finish Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum Revolver

Lot # 178 (Sale Order: 176 of 399)

The Registered Magnum Smith & Wesson Revolver was introduced in 1935. These iconic revolvers were constructed with the finest material and craftsmanship that Smith & Wesson could produce and came with a registration certificate signed by the Vice President of Smith & Wesson Douglas Wesson himself. The production cost to make these special order guns was extremely cost prohibitive and the offering was discontinued after approximately 5500 hundred units where produced. The Registered Magnum series were built using the N-Frame and offered with barrel lengths from 3 1/2 inches to 8 3/4 inches. The standard finish was blue but on rare occasions some guns were ordered with a bright polished nickel finish. These rare revolvers were used extensively by Lawmen and some very noted firearms authors and authorities and have always been a centerpiece of Smith & Wesson collections. This outstanding example was special ordered and shipped from the factory on May 19 1937. Serial number 51309 with its registration number being 2252. This gun was part of a four gun shipment shipped to Reams Hardware Co. Middlesboro KY. It was shipped with a 5 inch barrel equipped with a Gold bead "KING" front sight on "KING" base. "U" notch rear sight blade NICKEL finish and checkered Magna grips. Requested at time of special order was a notation for the gun to be sighted in at 25 yards with 357 Magnum ammunition with a dead center hold. CONDITION. Exceptionally fine with 98% of the factory applied nickel finish remaining with several very minor surface scratches and nicks. The minute gold bead has disappeared over the years as is common with these "KING sight blades and the rear sight blade has been cut square to allow better visability. The serial number is observed on the bottom of the butt, on rear of cylinder, inside the barrel shroud and inside the Magna grips on the inside of the right grip. The Registration number "REG 2252" is found inside the frame. The bore and chambered are mirror bright with perfect rifling. The action is crisp and properly functioning. The Grips are superb wit sharp checkering and fine original finish. A very small chip is evident on the bottom outer edge of the right grip. This outstanding Revolver is completely documented by a 2 page letter with full details of the history of the production and shipment of this gun from expert Roy Jinks historian for Smith & Wesson. TDW Accessories: Nonoriginal case Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: .357 Magnum FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Smith and Wesson Model: Pre-War Magnun Paperwork: Yes Serial Number: 51309

(C) Iconic Gun Writer Col. Charles Askins' Ten Gauge Magnum Relief Game Scene Engraved Presentation

Lot # 180 (Sale Order: 178 of 399)

(1952) Col. Charles Askins, son of Maj. Charles Askins, well known gun writer before WWII; was also a well known, prolific, gun writer in the 50's through the 70's, who led an interesting and checkered life starting as a border patrol agent in the southwest. He had service during WWII in Europe and Africa, after which he spent several years in Spain as an attache to the American embassy helping to re-build Spain's munitions plants. While in Spain he formed a close relationship with AYA co-founder Agustin Aranzabal. It was during this time that he acquired this fine custom made shotgun. Although mostly known for serviceable but relatively low priced double shotguns; during the early '50's, AYA produced many guns approaching the quality of London's best. The model "Senior" was built to Beesley's patent and was nearly indistinguishable from the same gun built by Purdey. Most of AYA's production was based on the Holland & Holland system as is the case with this gun. Maj. Charles Askins (the Colonel's father) was instrumental in the development of the 10 gauge 3-1/2" magnum cartridge, and was given the very first production gun in this chambering by Ithaca. That gun was later acquired by Maj. Askins' friend and contemporary gun writer, Elmer Keith. This particular gun in Maj. Askins favorite ten bore magnum loading has 30" finely struck chopper lump barrels fitted with raised flat matted "pigeon" rib. Tops of barrels are gold inlaid "Fca Aguirre y Aranzabal - MADE IN SPAIN" and "SPECIALLY MADE FOR CHARLES ASKINS". There are 4 triangles of nicely cut floral acanthus and scroll engraving at breech ends with matching triangles around muzzles. Coin finished, robust, sidelock action features non-automatic safety, hidden third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, gold-plated internals, and gold-plated single non-elective trigger. Action is beautifully filed and all mating surfaces are closely fitted and brightly polished. Action and lockplates are engraved with full coverage well cut attenuated acanthus and floral motifs in a background of small scroll. This fine work surrounds high relief carvings of dogs and game. Left lockplate depicts a pack of hounds coursing a large boar, one hapless hound is being trampled. Right lock depicts four hounds bringing a wolf to bay. Bottom of action has vignette of pointing setter in woodlands. Fences are beautifully carved with flying ducks in marshy background. Edges are highlighted with relief scroll all within beaded borders. Blued top lever has gold inlaid AYA logo. Blued trigger guard engraved with matching floral acanthus has serial number on tang. Very finely marbled, dense European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14" over thin black KICKEEZ pad. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Toe line is embellished with inlet gold heraldic American eagle over the initials "CH A". Matching beavertail ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in good quality leather case with stitched leather corners, lined in burgundy cloth. Silver embossed black leather AYA label is in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment and a square oil bottle. Gun is accompanied by "UNREPENTANT SINNER, the autobiography of Charles Askins", as well as Wikipedia information on Askins, a copy of an article from SHOOTING TIMES "The Legend of Charlie Askins" by Skeeter Skelton, information about AYA, and other information regarding this gun. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain approx 95% original blue with some light marks and high edge wear. Action retains virtually all of its coin finish, lightly toned with accumulation of oil over the years. Top lever thumbpiece and trigger guard tang are very lightly silvered. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish with some marks and a few light scuffs associated with installation of newer pad. Checkering is very lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Relatively new case is excellent. A very fine historically important Spanish "best". MGM71 Accessories: Case Barrel Length: 30" Barrel Wall Thickness: L .040 R .038 Chamber: 3 - 1/2" Choke: full and full Drop at Comb: 1 - 9/16" Drop at Heel: 2 - 1/2" FFL Status: Curio & Relic Gauge: 10 ga 3-1/2" Mag Length Of Pull: 14" Neutral cast Manufacturer: Aguirre y Aranzabal Model: SXS Sidelock Paperwork: Yes Serial Number: 85714 Weight: 9 lbs 9 oz

(C) Cigar Chomping, Stetson Wearing, Plain Speaking Gun Writer Elmer Keith's Custom Made 16 Gauge "B

Lot # 181 (Sale Order: 179 of 399)

In the early 1950's AYA made some truly exceptional high quality hand made guns including this fine example specially made to well known gun writer Elmer Keith's specifications. This cataloger recalls reading an account by Elmer detailing his ordering and receiving of this gun, but cannot remember where, probably in an old GUNS AND AMMO. It was built in Keith's favorite 16 gauge with single selective trigger, ventilated rib, beavertail forend, and cheekpiece. All the things Elmer thought a proper shotgun should have. The well struck 30" chopper lump barrels are fitted with an unusual slightly raised flat matted ventilated rib with two steel sighting beads. Tops of barrels are engraved with AYA name and address and steel type (Chromo - Niquel). Barrel flats are stamped with serial number and 1952 Spanish nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Choke numbers are stamped on bottoms of barrels. H&H type sidelock action is case hardened and features non-automatic safety (S inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, bushed strikers, side clips, gas vents, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, and single selective trigger of Miller type, probably supplied to AYA by Elmer Keith. Action is filed in "best" manner with delicate beads around fences. Fitting of barrels and forend iron is very precise. Action and locks are engraved with near full coverage classic rose and scroll, the execution of which rivals the best in the industry with its nicely shaded scroll and well detailed rose bouquets. "AGUIRRE Y ARANZABAL" is at the bottom of each lockplate,as well as on bottom of action along with "EIBAR". Blued top lever and trigger guard have matching scroll. Serial number is in low relief on trigger guard tang. Smoky marbled French walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over red open sided AYA pad. Nicely shaped drop points are behind locks. Well cut point pattern checkering is on diamond hand. A shadow line cheekpiece, a feature that Elmer thought was a necessity on a shotgun, is on the left side of butt. A gold heraldic US eagle over the individual initials "EK" are inlet on toe line. Matching extra long beavertail ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in its original tan leather case with riveted on nickel-plated corners. A nickel plated oval on top is engraved "EK". A return address label for Ted Keith, Boise Idaho, is affixed to front. Interior is lined in green cloth and contains 2-piece aluminum and plastic Parker Hale cleaning rod, case straps, cleaning brush, and original proof certificate dated 14 November 1952. CONDITION: Excellent, original, as found, showing evidence of only occasional light field use, retaining nearly all original finishes with slight high edge silvering on barrels and action, and some lifting of stock finish toward rear of butt, and some wear of finish at balance point on forend. Bores are excellent. Mechanically excellent. Case leather has some light marks and scuffs. Plating of hardware is slightly toned. Interior cloth has a few rubs and a bit of soiling. An incredible piece of Keith memorabilia. (C) Marcellus Hartley Dodge Sr.'s (Chairman of the Board of Remington Arms) E. J. Churchill "Imperia

Lot # 195 (Sale Order: 193 of 399)

Heir to a large fortune augmented by his marriage to Geraldine Rockefeller, Marcellus Hartley Dodge was an avid yachtsman and equestrian, and was the chairman of the board of a number of arms related companies including UMC, BGI, as well as Remington Arms. In 1929 he ordered this fine shotgun, and was most likely influenced in his choice by the then, very popular books by E. J. Churchill, extolling the virtues of the 25" gun. The "imperial" grade was a second quality sidelock gun, but its very attractive engraving pattern added to its popularity. This gun has 25" dovetailed barrels fitted with slightly raised, matted, Churchill rib. Rear portion of rib is gold inlaid "XXV". Tops of barrels are engraved "E. J. Churchill (Gun Makers) Ltd" and "Orange St Gunworks, Leicester Square, London." Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers. Case hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences and features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, and double triggers. Action and lockplates are engraved with near full coverage varying sized, but large, open shaded acanthus scroll. Scroll on lockplates is very large and is the most recognizable feature of this grade. "E. J. Churchill" is on each lockplate. Bottom of action is gold inlaid with an imperial crown. Engraving work on this particular gun is exceptionally well done. Blued top lever, trigger plate, and trigger guard are also scroll engraved. Serial number is on short tang. Nicely marbled and stump figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over brown leather faced Hawkins pad. Classic drop points and point pattern checkering are at grip. The individual initials "MHD" are inlet on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is accompanied by Wikipedia information on Mr. Dodge, and a copy of Churchill ledger page for this gun indicating "special handling care of Remington Arms Ltd", and it was wanted in New York before 1 November. Gun is housed in its original VC leather case with stitched leather corners. A paper label on top printed "M. Hartley Dodge" has notation "This belongs to Philip Timmins". Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and has E. J. Churchill celluloid labels in lid. Case contains original accessories including 2-piece brass and ebony cleaning rod and Churchill marked snap caps and oil bottle. CONDITION: Excellent, original as found. Barrels retain over 95% original blue, slightly silvered at muzzles and on sharp edges, with some light marks, and with a small scattering of scratches mostly on right side. Action and lockplates retain 90 - 95% original case hardening color, silvered on edges of fences and beads from normal hand wear. Blued parts are also excellent with only some light silvering on sharp edges in their brilliant original blue. Stocks retain nearly all of their original hand rubbed oil finish with some light marks. Checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is beginning to darken, and has a fair number of scuffs and rubs. Interior cloth is fine with some rubs and soiling. Accessories are fine. An attractive gun, the XXV has a place today in grouse and woodcock covers, where its handiness excels. "Holland & Holland" and "London. England" are on each side of action. Bottoms of actions are engraved with more fine scroll surrounding Game Conservancy logo of a grouse standing over three fleur-di-lis. "The Game Conservancy" is in arched banner over logo, and "1979" is on strap work below. Single beaded trigger guards have matching scroll, serial numbers are in gold on tangs. Engravers signature "Casbard" is across trigger plates where mostly obscured by trigger guard bows. (Jeffrey Casbard apprenticed under Harry Kell and Ken Hunt, and remained at Purdeys until 1970, at which time he went freelance; later primarily associated with Holland & Holland) Finely matched well marbled and somewhat figured dark European walnut straight grip buttstocks measure 15" over checkered wood butts. Stocks are classically styled with drop points, point pattern checkering with mullered borders on diamond hands, and vacant gold ovals on bottoms. Matching splinter ejector forends have Anson releases. Guns are housed in their original high quality brown leather two gun motor case with stitched leather corners. Case is lined in dark green cloth, and has gold embossed black leather H&H label in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment. CONDITION: Excellent, very close to new, with only a few very light handling marks in all wood and metal surfaces. Marks most noticeable are a 3/16" rub through finish on right rear of butt "2" which has been darkened by added oil. Mechanically excellent. Case is excellent inside and out. A truly fine pair of guns, they could not be replaced today for less than $200,000.00. Or perhaps a 50 pound lottery ticket. (C) Unusual James Purdey & Sons Game Shotgun Specially Made with Germanic Features in its Original C

Lot # 203 (Sale Order: 200 of 399)

(1904) 28" Chopper lump barrels are engraved "J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House, South Audley Street, London." "Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth's Fluid - Pressed Steel" on narrow, swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Bottoms of barrels are stamped "CHOKE" and with serial numbers. Barrel makers initials "WH" (Bill Hill) are on bottom of left barrel, Tube numbers "30349" and "30350" are on loop. A narrow sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened, Beesley patent, self-opening sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, engraved arrowhead tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers (front articulated). (Case contains another set of triggers with finger blades that set much further back in trigger guard, possibly for winter use with gloved hand.) Action and lockplates are engraved with 90% coverage Purdey house style rose and scroll. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each lockplate and "PURDEY'S" "PATENT" is on bottom of action. "1" is inlaid in silver on top lever, and rear portion of barrel rib, indicating gun is number "1" of a pair. "2" is on forend tip as forends were switched at some time in the past. Original trigger guard is of nicely shaped horn in German style. Serial number is engraved on steel extension of trigger plate forming tang. This was specially made to accommodate horn guard. Very nicely marbled and well figured dark European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14" over checkered wood butt. Butt is fitted with engraved steel trap to receive removable counterweights to be installed to accommodate shift in balance when using alternate triggers. (These counterweights with their screws are in case, and are engraved "1" and "2".) Stock also features standard drop points, point pattern checkering at grip, and a sling loop on toe line matching that on barrels, as well as a silver oval engraved "BO". (Purdeys kindly informs that gun was delivered August 1904 to Mr. B. Oppenheimer, and that counterweights were to accommodate an additional set of 29" barrels. The different triggers alter the length of pull by about 1/8".) Splinter ejector forend with Anson release from gun "2" fits and functions well. Actioners initials "WN" (Wesley Nobbs) are on iron. Gun is housed in its original two gun oak and leather case with brass corners, and central round medallion engraved "B. O." Case is lined in scarlet cloth and has space for two guns with their 28" barrels, with another space for a set of 29" barrels. Case contains two piece walnut and brass cleaning rod with 6" handle along with brushes and Turks head, a narrow carrying sling, pair of Purdey marked snap caps, round unmarked oil bottle, red morocco wallet with cleaning brushes, large bone striker bottle with two sets of strikers and springs, another bone bottle with screws for attaching counterweights marked "1" and "2". One covered compartment contains the counterweights, also marked "1" and "2". Another compartment contains the accessory triggers. CONDITION: Very good to fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain over 90% of an old re-black, lettering somewhat softened. Action has traces of case hardening color where protected, but is mostly silver to gray. Locks retain perhaps 10 - 15% original faded color. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish with numerous marks and scratches, both light and heavy. Checkering and drop points worn. Ejector forend from gun no. "2" matches well. Bores are fine, a bit dirty, with evidence of a few raised dents, mostly in right barrel. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. A small chip of wood is missing from left side of forend at rear barrel channel. There is an incipient crack which appears stable behind left lockplate. Case leather is still relatively light in color with numerous scratches and marks. Straps are missing, handle is good. Lock loops are missing. Replaced latch does work. Interior cloth is fair to good with some insect damage, soiling, and rubs. Labels have been removed. Partitions are tight, one area near action of one gun has had a portion cut away. Accessories are generally good. A neat old Purdey gun that I'm sure would have many stories to tell.
