(C) Classic "G 70 Ejector" W.W. Greener Imperial Grade Heavy Proof Game Shotgun Exquisitely Engraved

Lot # 229 (Sale Order: 226 of 399)

(1912) Before WWI this grade of gun was called the "G70"; after the war the grade and price changed to 90 guineas. It was the top grade of the facile princeps line, and was priced equally with the best sidelock gun. This example has 28" dovetailed barrels with slightly raised, narrow, matted game rib. An unmatted portion of rib is engraved "W. W. Greener. Maker. 29, Pall Mall. London. Works, St Mary's Square. Birmingham." Tops of barrels are engraved "Sir Joseph Whitworth's Fluid Compressed Steel". There are 1-3/4" triangles of well cut open shaded scroll with oak leaf highlights at breech ends. Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Whitworth sheaf-of-wheat and Greener elephant trademarks, along with serial numbers. Case hardened scallop-backed action with internal "G" ejector system features side safety (SAFE in gold), hidden crossbolt third fastener, gold plated internals, and double triggers. Action is slightly reinforced, and has beautifully filed transition to sides and with beads running behind fences which are exceptionally well carved in relief double shells. This is a signature style of the vaunted Harry Tomlinson, Greener's best engraver. Remainder of the action is near fully engraved with superb open shaded scroll with oak leaf and wheat ear highlights surrounding nicely detailed game scenes; a pointer on left side pointing a rising covey of quail, and right side portrays a spaniel barking and plunging into a marsh as two ducks take flight. Trigger plate portrays a brace of grouse, one on each side, with another grouse flying toward viewer on forward arch. Action pin on top tang is ensnared by the coils of a snake. Top lever is gold inlaid with classic imperial grade Sovereign's crown and scepter. Trigger guard bow has wonderful scene of retriever with dead rabbit flanked by ears of wheat. Trigger guard tang is engraved with serial number in semi-relief, and "Grade G. 70." This imaginative and nicely laid out engraving is also undoubtedly by Tomlinson. Striking dark marbled and stump figured European walnut round knob pistol grip newly made buttstock measures 15" over 1/2" thick serrated horn buttplate. There are inlet horn drop points behind side panels and grip is checkered in fancy pattern. A gold oval on toe line is engraved "C. G. R. 2nd" "FROM" "A. P. R." "1932". Forend with original wood has fancy inlet schnabeled horn tip, superb borderless checkering, and Deeley release. What is possibly original oak and leather case with brass corners is embossed "G. H. S." on top. Interior is lined in green velvet. A fancy gold embossed maroon leather Greener label is in lid. Bottom portion is semi-french fitted for gun, barrels, and accessories which include round Greener marked oil bottle, two WWG marked horn handled turnscrews, German silver and horn Hawksley chamber brush, and two Hawksley snap caps, along with cleaning equipment including a 3 piece ebony and German silver cleaning rod. CONDITION: Very good, as partially refurbished. Barrels retain over 95% of an old re-black with subsequent silvering on sides and some light marks and scratches. Engraving remains clear and fairly sharp. Action is mostly faded to pewter gray with traces of color visible where protected. All engraving remains in good condition. Trigger guard retains most of an old re-blue, engraving at grip somewhat softened. Stock retains nearly all of its hand rubbed oil finish with some light marks. Buttplate does not fit well. Forend appears to be very lightly refinished, checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. As is very important with these guns, the ejectors are well regulated and in time. Case leather is very dark, has been preserved with Neatsfoot oil over many scuffs and rubs. Interior velvet is good to very good with soiling and compressions from gun and accessories. Action compartment has partitions moved to accommodate longer stock. Accessories are good to fine. A great shootable example of this all time classic shotgun. MGM57 Accessories: Case, Tools Barrel Length: 28" Barrel Wall Thickness: L .028 R .030 Chamber: 2 - 3/4" Choke: L .024 (mod) R .004 (IC) Drop at Comb: 1 - 3/8" Drop at Heel: 2 - 1/16" FFL Status: Curio & Relic Gauge: 12 Internal Bore Diameter: L .734 R .731 Length Of Pull: 15" cast about 1/4" off Manufacturer: W.W. (A) Historic and Fresh - Parker Grade 7 (AA) 12 Gauge Hammer Shotgun 3 Barrel Set owned by Famous Sh

Lot # 243 (Sale Order: 240 of 399)

Parker Bros. made five Grade 7 (AA) Grade Hammer guns, all with Whitworth Fluid steel barrels. This gun is the only one they made as a factory original multi barrel set (3 sets of barrels) and was originally ordered and owned by famous Parker Salesman and shooter Arthur W. du Bray. Several books have been written about du Bray and this gun has been rumored in the Parker circles as legend for many many years. It was recently discovered in the original Family and consigned to our firm by Arthur du Bray's Great Grandson! du Bray was well known as a champion pigeon shooter and the leading salesman for Parker Brothers on the West Coast - living in the Bay Area and distributing guns for Parker during his travels. The gun has double triggers, extractors, and no safety. The gun was originally ordered as a 12ga with 30" Whitworth Steel barrels on a No. 2 Frame. The original order called for 3" chambers, no rib extension on the barrels, no matting on the rib and special stock dimensions which are all outlined in the Parker Gun Collectors Association Letter. The PGCA letter for this gun is extensive and should be carefully reviewed as the gun matches the letter nearly exactly as found today with du Bray's numerous calls for servicing of the gun. Barrel set #2 is a set of 32" Titanic Steel Barrels, added in 1898, with full length matted rib (no rib extension, per PGCA Letter), engraved and fully checkered splinter forend, and white front bead. Barrel set #3 is a set of 32" Whitworth Barrels, added in 1902, with full length matted rib (no rib extension, per PGCA Letter), and white front bead, and fully checkered forend with forend metal engraved to match. All of the barrels and changes to the barrels are almost exactly as documented in the PGCA Letter. The full sidelock action is fantastically full coverage engraved with tight scroll and floral patterns throughout. The sidelocks are fancifully engraved "Parker Bros." on both sides surrounded by scroll and perfectly executed busts of flowers. The bottom of the action is fully scroll and floral engraved with flowers engraved on the bottom of the sculpturing. Trigger guard bow and tang are fully engraved with gorgeous floral and scroll pattern. There is a small hole at the back of the bow for a finger bump. Straight grip buttstock is checkered in a 3 point pattern with gold oval near toe and gold shield behind top tang. The butt is 3 point checkered and appears factory. The head of the stock features Fleur-de-lis well carved behind the auction. The Fishtail top lever is fully engraved as are both hammers. Breechballs are fully sculpted and engraved to the highest order done by Parker. Barrels were all special ordered without wedge engraving and show a small floral ring at breech end. All 3 forends are fully checkered and fully engraved irons with matching tips. CONDITION: Excellent as found. The action shows crisp engraving overall with about 25-30% original case color remaining though it is difficult to discern due to extensive engraving. Buttstock is excellent with minor handling marks and shows most of what appears to be its factory original finish from 1901 as documented in the PGCA Letter. The checkering has just barely started to thin from handling wear by du Bray. Barrels all show an older reblued finish. Barrel set # 1 has the original Damascus top rib without matting (as specified in the PGCA Letter) and crisp barrel legend, and usual proper Whitworth stampings. It retains nearly all of the reblued finish, bores are bright and shiny with only minor handling marks. Forend for this set is all original with checkering slightly thinned at carry point. Bores are very good. Barrel set # 2 (Titanic Steel) retain nearly all of the reblued finish, show a few minor handling marks, with crisp matting, engraving, and barrel legend. The later mid-bead (red) on this set has come off and only the base remains. Forend iron for this barrel set appears to be original, though recolored long ago, and the wood may be a later Remington or Del Grego replacement though it matches the others in all aspects included the mullered border checkering, but tip shaping leads this cataloger to believe it is a possible replacement. Bores are good with minor rivelling noted at thin spot towards muzzle. (The PGCA Letter confirms this set of barrels was sent back to Parker to "Make light as can" and the thin spot near the muzzle is most likely factory work). Click here to see the full description.

(A) Rare James Purdey & Sons "Grade C" Boxlock Game Shotgun Incorporating W. Anson Patent Ejector of

Lot # 247 (Sale Order: 244 of 399)

(1888) In the late 1870's Purdeys, who had always made "best" guns only, was looking for a larger market share, and introduced a line of lesser quality guns still carrying the Purdey name. A normal best gun was given "Grade A", and sold for 58 pounds, and grades ranged down through to "Grade E" which sold for 22 pounds. All grades under "A" were clearly marked with their grade under a crossed bullet logo trademark on barrel flats and water table. Some of these guns were produced in-house, but most were acquired through the trade, and finished at Purdeys. This particular gun, a best quality Anson & Deeley boxlock, is a "Grade C" gun which retailed at almost 36 pounds. It was most likely acquired from W. and C. Scott and finished at Purdeys. It has 30" fine Damascus barrels fitted with slightly swamped narrow game rib engraved "J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London". Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London black powder proofs and barrel flats are stamped with London nitro re-proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers, along with the aforementioned Purdey trademark and "C". Case hardened boxlock action with intercepting safety sears (Anson & Deeley patent use number 4929) also features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), and pivoting third fastener which engages a dolls head rib extension, and double triggers. Action and extractors are fitted with an unusual ejector system patented by W. Anson in 1884 with modifications in 1886. The entire mechanism is incorporated in the extractors and rear lump, and is non-selective. Action is engraved with 70% coverage well cut small classic scroll. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each side. Blued top lever, floorplate, and trigger guard are also scroll engraved. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Nicely streaked and lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 3/8" over checkered wood butt. Drop points are behind side panels and point pattern flat top checkering with mullered borders is at grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend is nearly fully checkered and has Anson release with patent marking on plunger housing. Gun is housed in an old leather case with riveted on plated corners on top, which is embossed "M. D. E." Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and has reproduction Purdey label along with new charge card with specifications for this gun, in lid. Case contains a round Purdey marked oil bottle. CONDITION: Very fine, as refinished, many years ago. Barrels retain 80 - 90% good quality re-brown, most likely applied at time of re-proof. Action retains approx 60% newer London case color, engraving slightly softened. Blued parts retain most of their blue. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish over some light marks with many minor subsequent marks. Checkering is somewhat worn. Bores are very fine to excellent, slightly frosted at breech ends. Action is tight. Barrels are off face. Ejector fires each time barrels are opened. Case leather is dark, stained and rubbed. Straps are missing. Renewed handle is good. Interior is good. A neat old Purdey with some intriguing features. MGM62 Accessories: Case Barrel Length: 30" Barrel Wall Thickness: L .032 R .033 Chamber : 2 - 1/2" Choke: L .020 (mod) R .005 (IC) Drop at Comb: 1 - 3/8" Drop at Heel: 1 - 7/8" FFL Status: Antique Gauge: 12 Internal Bore Diameter: L .732 R .738 Length of Pull: 14 - 3/8" neutral cast Manufacturer: Purdey Model: SXS BL Paperwork: No Serial Number: 12978 Weight: 6 lbs 11 oz.

(A) Attractive High Condition James Purdey Hammer Side by Side Shotgun Incorporating Unusual Long Gu

Lot # 248 (Sale Order: 245 of 399)

According to factory letter this gun was completed in October 1863 for Dr. Ludin. It was a 12 bore pinfire and has been converted to center fire. A second letter states "from the style and quality of alteration, I am sure this was done by Purdeys". 30" Bold two stripe Damascus barrels are engraved "J. Purdey. 314 1/2 Oxford Street, London." on narrow swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Lumps are fitted with early type bridled extractor. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial numbers. Round bodied action fitted with Purdey's long guard lever, similar to a Jones except rear portion of lever has been extended to an integral trigger guard having long tang with scrolled end. When gun is open, lever extends about 10" to the right and triggers are exposed. To make this situation safe, a trigger blocking mechanism is incorporated in rear portion of long trigger plate. When lever is in closed position, a small boss on lever pushes internal safety lever upward unlocking triggers (Wyatt's Patent, a holdover from flintlock days). This action is normally found on double rifles. Action is fitted with peninsula back spring locks having short round bodied serpentine hammers with stylized dolphin heads. The conversion from pinfire is nearly undetectable, with pin holes in barrels plugged, new hammers installed, and standing breech re-worked for center fire. All new work is engraved to match original. Action and locks are engraved with 60% coverage very well cut shaded scroll. "Purdey" is at the top of each lockplate and "Patent" is on top of action. Guard lever is also scroll engraved, and has serial number at grip. Superb, beautifully marbled and nicely figured flesh-toned Circassian walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14" over checkered wood butt. Flat top checkering with truncated front borders is at grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter forend with shaped metal tip is near fully checkered and attaches to barrels with sliding side bolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. Gun comes in its original quartered oak case with dual hook closure and D ring handle on top. Guns serial number is in ink on round paper dot under compartment cover. Case is lined in green cloth, and has blue and black ink Purdey Oxford Street label in lid which is inscribed with loading data and instructions in India ink. Case contains an array of high quality cleaning and loading implements, which appear to be original, consisting of two piece ebony and brass cleaning rod with 6" handle piece, and ebony and German silver roll crimping tool marked Purdey, along with matching ebony handled German silver powder and shot measure by Dixon, wad rammer, case mouth reamer with maple handle, case hardened mainspring vice, Hawksley German silver broken case extractor, mops, brushes and key. Newer accessories include a square Purdey marked oil bottle and a pull through cleaning kit. CONDITION: Excellent, as refurbished by Purdeys at time of conversion to center fire. Barrels retain 85 -90% brown with small areas of silvering. Action and locks retain 60 - 70% case hardening color, silvered from normal hand wear. Stocks retain nearly all of their possibly original hand rubbed oil finish with some light marks and scratches. Checkering is lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Locks are crisp. Case possibly refinished at the same time, retains most of its varnish with some staining around handle and lid. Original interior cloth is very fine to excellent with some light soiling and compressions. Label is very fine, lightly foxed, and with one small rub through. Partitions are generally good. Accessories are very good to fine. A truly fine early Purdey. This gun is listed in THE EARLY PURDEYS by L. Patrick Unsworth as an early breech loader, and was not known to the author. Captain Bogardus Glass Ball Thrower with Three Amber Balls.

Lot # 249 (Sale Order: 246 of 399)

Captain Bogardus was a well known author and shooter during the 1860's and '70's, and patented the first successful glass ball thrower in 1877. It came in two varieties, the simplest would only throw balls straight away, and cost $6.00 at the time. The example offered here retailed for $8.00 and could be controlled by the person behind the shooter for angled, as well as straight shots, as top spring mounting block pivoted on a large wooden base. This example is branded "W & C. SCOTT & SON MAKERS PREMIER GUN WORKS BIRMINGHAM" on right side of oak mounting block. Top of this block has tacked on embossed brass medallion with trademark of shooter surrounded by "CAPTAIN BOGARDUS" "PATENT BALL TRAP". Balls were placed in a brass cup affixed to long side of a large V-spring, which is retained in loaded position by spring-loaded hook at rear with three notches to adjust for distance. Trap comes with three smooth amber balls (most later balls had a pattern so they'd break more easily). Two balls are made in a three piece mold and have standard wide opening, one with small opening is free blown. CONDITION: Fine, as conserved. Wooden parts are complete but oiled. Metal parts, once lightly rusted, have been cleaned and oiled. Lanyards, etc. renewed with black leather. Trademark medallion has some losses toward top. Balls are good, unbroken yet. Have at it! Overall it retains virtually all of its deluxe Colt finish with glossy bright blue having only faint muzzle edge wear with some very slight thinning to the sharp edges and a light cylinder drag line. Frame, hammer and rammer retain virtually all of their brilliant case colors, slightly thinned on right side of frame. (A) Cased and Engraved Colt 1862 Police Percussion Revolver (1864).

Lot # 252 (Sale Order: 249 of 399)

Blue and color case hardened with round barrel, brass pin front sight and one line address. Matching numbers on frame, barrel, trigger guard, backstrap, wedge, cylinder and cylinder pin. Cylinder is usual fluted five shot with blued steel grip frame sporting a most unusual set of two piece pearl grips. Grips, as noted, are genuine pearl in two pieces with a most unusual mounting system which consists of the retaining screw through steel escutcheons with an ivory block in the middle that has two locating pins and pin recesses in each grip. Ivory block is pencil numbered to the revolver. Left grip is slightly raised carved in the pattern of a stand of flags with liberty cap, a rifle with bayonet and a star around the escutcheon. Right grip is engraved with oak leaves and acorns and a star around the grip escutcheon. Frame, barrel, back strap, trigger guard and hammer are wonderfully engraved by Master Engraver Gustave Young with full coverage foliate arabesque patterns on the frame which extend over the barrel lug. Several of the scrolls terminate in flower blossoms. Hammer is deluxe engraved with a wolf head on each side of the hammer nose and foliate arabesque patterns down the sides. Top of the back strap has Mr. Young’s typical fan pattern with foliate arabesque patterns elsewhere. Back strap is inscribed, in very fine period script engraving, “Metropolitan Fair N.Y. / from Colts Pt F.A. Mfg Co / Hartford Conn. March 28. 1864”. The fair was held for the Sanitary Commission in order to raise money for their work supplying clothing and supplies to Union soldiers in the Civil War. This revolver is pictured in full color, two exposures, on page 54 of "Fine Colts The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection", Wilson. The caption for these photographs and for the Root revolver on the preceding page, which is nearly identically inscribed with the date March 28th, 1864, states that Mrs. Samuel Colt, her sister Miss Jarvis, the wife of Governor Holley and Miss Olmstead were in attendance at the Connecticut booth. Accompanied by its original spectacular rosewood casing with burgundy velvet lining compartmented in the bottom for the revolver, a spectacular presentation quality, high gloss finish, two cavity steel bullet mold with “COLTS PATENT” sprue cutter, marked on the right side “36P”, an equally high gloss finish nipple wrench, a single sided “COLTS PATENT” eagle flask, a full lacquered tin of Eley’s Bros. caps, two spare nipples and five original sealed packets of combustible cartridges. Inside the lid is a small card, inscribed in period ink script, “From Colts Patent / Fire Arms Company / $—.00 / 5 1/2 inch Police/Pearl Stock.” The price has been obliterated but there is little doubt that this was the orig price card from the Metropolitan Fair in 1864. Colt presentation revolvers are not uncommon, however organizational presentations such as this one are extremely rare especially given the complete deluxe treatment as found on this set. PROVENANCE: Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection; Herb Glass. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching including wedge and grips. Barrel retains about 30% glossy original blue with balance flaked, not worn, to a light patina. Frame and hammer retain most of their original case colors, strong and bright, slightly darkened on top edge of hammer. Cylinder retains about 50% glossy original blue with balance flaked to a light patina. Backstrap is cleaned over the inscription area to grey metal color with strong blue at top and butt strap. Trigger guard retains thin original blue, stronger in sheltered areas, grey on front strap with light pitting. Grips are extraordinary with a minor chip on right toe, otherwise are sound with great fire and color. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore with one spot of light pitting. May be unfired. Case is completely sound with faded oil cloth on bottom, lightly to moderately faded interior with very light soil. All accessories are exceptionally fine and appear to be unused. Cartridge packets are crisp. Photos are fine. Newspaper is slightly yellowed and a little brittle with worn back edge but appears to be completely intact. From the collection of Jason Roselius. Accessories : Case, bullet mold, powder flask, caps tin, five boxes of ammo Barrel Length: 5 - 3/8" Caliber/Bore: .36 Percussion FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1862 Police Paperwork : No Serial Number: 14302

(A) Colt Single Action Army Revolver Once Belonging to Famed Lawman Wyatt Earp (1890).

Lot # 253 (Sale Order: 250 of 399)

Colt Factory research letter on this revolver states that serial number 133673 was shipped July 3rd, 1890 to Hartley & Graham in New York, in caliber .45, 4-3/4" barrel, stocks not listed which would usually indicate standard hard rubber. The name "Wyatt Earp" needs no introduction. There have been more books and movies made of Wyatt Earp than any other personage of the Wild West, more recently the movie "Tombstone" starring Kurt Russell was one of the most popular Western movies of all time, telling the story of Earp in Dodge City with his brothers taking on the McLaury's and the Clanton's in the most famous Western gunfight of all time. With his companion Josephine Marcus, he moved to California where he ran saloons and gambled prior to his Nome, Alaska adventure in 1899. When he returned from Alaska he lived the reminder of his life in Los Angeles, passing away on January 13th, 1929. During Earp's time as a Sheriff in Dodge City, the famous Bat Masterson was one of his deputies. Masterson's favorite weapon was a 4-3/4", .45 caliber, nickel plated with rubber grips ordered personally with an extra high front sight. He placed orders for more than one of these revolvers during his lifetime and is well documented, so it is no surprise to find this exact type and finish revolver in the hands of Wyatt Earp during the 1890's. The eagle hard rubber grips were the style used from 1881 through 1891. The name "WYATT EARP" is scratched at the inside base of both grip panels. The lineage is extensive and concrete as it stayed within the Earp family until finally sold by Gale Earp, son of George Earp, first cousin to Wyatt. The gun finally leaving the family to a Joplin, Missouri gun dealer O.B. O'Ferrell who in turn sold the revolver to David Hall about 1977 to 1978. Lineage is as follow: Wyatt Earp to first cousin George Earp (d. 1960), whose son Gale Earp inherited the gun at that time and kept it in the family until he finally sold it in the 70's to O.B. O'Ferrell, who sold it to Leon Sinn in 1976 who in turn sold it to David Hall in 1977-78. David Hall auctioned it threw Tom Keilman Auctions in May 1999. This revolver is accompanied by a plethora or information including an article by David Hall in the Fall 1990 Texas Gun Collector that features this revolver, its story and other Earp items owned by Hall; numerous paper article cut-outs from Pella, Iowa from 1958 where Earp once lived; copies of photos of Sheriff Gale Earp standing next to Marshall Ralph Hooker; notarized letters from Gale Earp dated 1974 where he lists this gun by serial number, signed in front of a notary public as selling it to O.B. O'Ferrell in 1974. There is a letter from Marshall Ralph Hooker that states "I have known the Earp's for many years, George Earp, US Marshall (Wyatt's first cousin) who worked with Wyatt Earp in Kansas, was a very good friend of mine. I have known Gale Earp of Cartridge, Missouri for many years...the .45 Single Action Colt No. 133674, which belonged to O.B. O'Ferrell when he last saw it was once owned by Wyatt Earp. Having known Gale Earp for so long, one can be sure that the .45 he sold to Mr. O'Ferrell is no doubt the one which Wyatt owned". Martial Hooker signed this affidavit in 1978. All of these letters refer to Wyatt Earp's revolver with correct serial number. This would indicate that this revolver was in the Earp family from time of purchase until 1974. CONDITION: The cylinder retains traces of original nickel. Barrel and ejector rod housing retains 75-80% original factory nickel. Frame retains approximately 75% nickel with loss to forward section. Frame has three line patent date. The grips are excellent to near mint, fit tightly, matching edges of metal with just a touch of shrinkage; appear to have been on the gun and are on the gun in every enclosed photograph and documentation. Indexes and locks up like a vault. Strong, clean rifled bore with no abrasions. A wonderful piece of American Western history owned by one of the most famous lawmen of all time who had direct family documentation. A unique opportunity to own one of Wyatt Earp's standard guns. Barrel Length: 4 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Paperwork : Yes Serial Number: 133674 CORRECTION: The eagle hard rubber grips were the style used from 1881 through 1891.
