Born in 1831, Grenville M. After the opening of the Civil War, Dodge was appointed Colonel of the 4th Iowa, serving effectively in Missouri, the Vicksburg Campaign, the Siege of Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea, eventually receiving the rank of Major General of the XVI Corps in the Army of Tennessee, and several wounds from his valiant service. Dodge was then given command of the Department of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Utah, where he ordered the infamous Powder River Expedition. (A) OUTSTANDING NIMSCHKE ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON NO. 3 RUSSIAN THIRD MODEL SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1231 (Sale Order: 90 of 324)

This is an outstandingly engraved example of a Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian, 2nd Model, most likely executed by the hand of L.D. Nimschke himself. Nimschke signed few works, but the interwoven arrow motif ascribed to him appears 4 times on this gun: once on each side of the barrel, and twice at the hinge pin/ratchet that controls the ejector. Other motifs include fantastically executed flowing scroll on a punch dot background, half-shells on the front sight, frame under the cylinder, and on the frame abutting the hammer, and geometrics. Strawed cylinder, trigger guard, and hammer. Frame is decorated with Western motifs, with the left side engraved with an American bison, while the right has a Native American warrior in a war bonnet. Grips are ivory scales retained by a single screw through a German silver escutcheon. Fixed lanyard loop on butt, with "SH" in a lozenge, indicating shipment to Schuyler, Hartley, and Graham, and dated "1874" on left side of frame knuckle. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the original nickel plating, with appropriate distension about the serial number underneath the grips. Some flaking and pockmarks to edges, particularly at grip straps and forcing cone, with lesser spots on frame. Strawing is faded, now a mellow bronze color with areas of gunmetal grey. Mechanically fine, bore with strong rifling and some minor frosting. This is an excellent example of Nimschke's artistry. Barrel Length: 6 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .44 S&W Russian FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: No. 3 Russian 2nd Model Serial Number: 42203

(A) HIGH CONDITION BLUE SMITH AND WESSON AMERICAN SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1235 (Sale Order: 94 of 324)

The American Model was the first big bore cartridge revolver made in the United States. This is a First Model, of which approximately 8000 were made between 1870-72. It is estimated that only about 10% were made with a factory blue finish with the balance of production being of nickel finish. It is not an "oil hole" model, making it a Second Variation First Model. It is a standard model in all respects with an 8" barrel, blue finish, six shot, single action, case color hammer and trigger guard, smooth two piece walnut grips and no lanyard. The top of the barrel is stamped with English barrel address. The caliber is .44 S&W American. The majority of these early large bore guns saw hard use and to find an example that is both factory blue and in near mint original condition makes this a true rarity. You will find the matching assembly number 415 stamped on the back of the cylinder as well as the barrel and latch. The matching serial number, 6803, is also stamped inside the right grip panel. CONDITION: This revolver does not appear to have seen much use. The factory blue is still bright and the grips straps still retain majority of this high polish factory finish. There is some simple flaking of finish on cylinder and barrel while the frame retains the majority of this bright blue. If one were to place a number on remaining finish, it would have to be around 90% but, as stated, blue loss is simply finish flaking, not wear. The bore is near mint and bright. The action is as crisp as new. The original grips are near mint with original oil finish. The dulling color is intact on hammer and traces on guard. This has to be one of the finest surviving blue First Models extant and would be near impossible to find a finer all original example of this scarce big bore Wild West sixgun. Barrel Length: 8" Caliber/Bore: .44 S&W American FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Smith and Wesson Model: Model 3 Serial Number: 6083

(A) VERY FINE MARTIALLY MARKED SMITH & WESSON SECOND MODEL NO. 3 SCHOFIELD SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1237 (Sale Order: 96 of 324)

Manufactured 1876 with approximately 5,934 made in this model, most of which were purchased for the US military. The Schofield revolvers were issued to units such as the 4th, 9th, and 10th Cavalry, and subsequently found themselves in use in the American West. The 4th Cavalry was involved in Geronimo's capture. The 9th and 10th Cavalry were part of the legendary "Buffalo Soldiers". Manufactured in classic configuration throughout. The military requested that Smith & Wesson chamber the Schofields in the then-standard issue .45 Colt, which was too long to function in these revolvers. Smith & Wesson instead requested to design a cartridge that was .45 caliber and would work in both the Schofields and the Colt Single Action Army, which the US military then accepted. 2-piece walnut grips is marked with faint "CW" cartouche on right grip panel with "JRJr." cartouche on left grip panel. Additional markings include 1876 date on left grip panel and US mark on butt. Cylinder and butt have matching serial numbers. Grips are numbered 4740 on inside of both grip panels in different fonts. Martial subinspector markings can be seen at bottom flat of ejector housing and rear face of cylinder. CONDITION: Excellent for its age, with a majority of the thinning original bluing remaining mixing with a brown patina. Front and backstraps are mostly a gray patina. Hammer retains faded case colors. Left grip panel is excellent with markings legible and no major signs of distress. Right grip panel has been sanded with finish added and nail repair near cartouche. Mechanically fine. Bore is lightly frosted with crisp rifling. Barrel Length: 7" Caliber/Bore: .45 S&W FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: No. 3 Schofield Serial Number: 4740

Lot # 1240 (Sale Order: 99 of 324)

Originally issued in 1875 to Troop C, 5th Cavalry. When this revolver was sold in 2007, it came with a Springfield Research letter that stated it was one of 31 revolvers subject to a survey at Fort Riley, Kansas which determined that the interior works were out of order and recommended it be sent to Rock Island Arsenal for repair in 1886. It also is 1 of the 800 SAAs sent to Colt for refurbishment and issue to the New York Militia in 1895, per page 43 of "Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers... A Continuing Study" by Kopec and Fenn where the serial number is mentioned in a listing of New York Militia Issues and also listed as issued to Troop C, 5th Cavalry in the listing of Revolvers with Historical Association Within the 1875 Series of Cavalry Issues. Revolvers sent to Colt for refurbishment had the entire serial number stamped on both the cylinder and barrel, retained their early features, were left all matching, were finished in Colt's commercial charcoal blue finish with color case hardened frame, and the hammers were given a unique brilliant nitre blue finish. Matching full serial numbers observed at barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and butt. "J" sub-inspector marked on trigger guard, top of backstrap near butt, cylinder, and barrel. Hammer is inspector marked with Henry Nettleton's "H.N" on left side. Mounted with 1 piece walnut grips which are unmarked with the exception of "R.A.C" inspector marking near butt. An attractive rare Colt Single Action Army in a unique configuration. Accessories: Case Barrel Length: 7 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Serial Number: 16928

(A) NETTLETON INSPECTED COLT CAVALRY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER.

Lot # 1241 (Sale Order: 100 of 324)

Blue & color case hardened with uncut 7 - 1/2" barrel, full front sight and 1-line block letter address. Bottom of barrel has last 4 digits of serial number under ejector rod housing. Ejector rod housing is a second type with bullseye ejector rod head. Left side of frame has 3-line patent dates and a small “US” without periods. Mounted with original one piece walnut grip with last four digits of serial number in back strap channel, "1878" over the crisp oval cartouche “JEG” for Military Inspector Capt. John E. Greer on left side, and crisp oval cartouche "HN" for Henry Nettleton on right. This revolver is part of the later contracts of 1878, probably from the one that was signed August 27th, 1878. The "HN" sub-inspector initials of Henry Nettleton are observed on the frame & trigger guard adjacent to serial numbers on bottom of barrel, top of back strap, outer diameter of cylinder, and bottom right edge of grip. Left side of the hammer also has Nettleton’s initials. It is interesting to note that this revolver is only two SNs away from an identified “Keyes” revolver. Capt. A.S.B. Keyes was a captain in Troop D of the 10th Cavalry stationed at Fort Davis, Texas, apparently in charge of the Armory when 47 revolvers were discovered missing. Attempting to cover up his laxity in control, Capt. Keyes privately purchased 47 replacement revolvers and installed them in the Armory prior to an audit. His efforts failed as the subterfuge was discovered and he was issued a written reprimand condemning him for his actions. Nettleton inspected Colts were produced in 1878 and, as such, were available and issued to troops on the frontier engaged in the Indian Wars for many years thereafter, and few survive today in original configuration and original finish. A majority of the Nettleton contracts were returned in 1893 and in later recalls and altered to artillery configuration. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching, including barrel, cylinder, and grip. Barrel and ejector rod housing retains approximately 95+% strong original factory blue with very strong feathers on each side of the front sight and ejector rod housing stud and bright blue on ejector rod housing screw. Frame retains the vast majority of the brilliant factory case colors, slightly faded on the recoil shield & loading gate. Hammer retains heavily faded case colors. Trigger guard and back strap retain most of their original factory blue with candy striping on most of those surfaces with fine feathers on the flats of trigger plate on each side of the front web of the trigger guard. Cylinder retains approximately 95+% strong original blue, slightly thinned on outer diameter, glossy & bright in the flutes. Grip has a chipped right toe, otherwise is completely sound, showing light wear with a few nicks & dings on left side with crisp date & cartouches and retains most of its original oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, may have been fired, but if so, very little. Barrel Length: 7 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Serial Number: 48298
