LARGE EXTREMELY RARE SCAGEL MADE VL&A MARKED KNIFE.

Lot # 1422 (Sale Order: 281 of 324)

William Wales Scagel is considered to be the foremost pioneer in 20th century custom knifemaking. Throughout his knifemaking career, Scagel crafted hunting knives, machetes, axes, bowie knives, fighting knives, and pocket knives, some of which were used for the expeditions of the Smithsonian Institution. This specimen is a superbly marked example of Bill Scagel's craftmanship. The knife features a 8" spearpoint blade that is marked on the obverse with a partial "VL&A / CHICAGO" stamp and his famous kris mark. The reverse blade is marked "W. Scagel". The blade exhibits a pleasing gray patina with scattered blemishes throughout. Diamond shaped crossguard with "X" marking on either side. Crossguard is slightly loose. Mexican style handle with brass ferrule and pommel that flank the grip which consists of buffalo horn and bovine horn separated by a thick red spacer. The horn neatly fits into the points of the ferrule and pommel, which is impressive considering the fragility of horn. The handle exhibits a pleasing patina with some slight blemishes to the horn. 12 - 3/4" overall. The knife is complete with its original leather scabbard that exhibits scattered blemishes with an intact belt loop. 1 tear at lower left pin. This is an excellent example of a Scagel knife. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 7 - 7/8" Overall Length: 12 - 3/4"

WOODHEAD & HARTLEY BOWIE KNIFE WITH HORSE AND ALLIGATOR POMMEL.

Lot # 1431 (Sale Order: 290 of 324)

Established in Sheffield in 1839, the firm of George Woodhead and Joshua Hartley is believed to have begun crafting Bowie knives in 1841. Like many Sheffield cutlers, Woodhead and Hartley capitalized on American exports, feeding the American appetite for quality European blades. This example of their work features a clip point blade that measures 8 - 1/2" with a 5" false edge. Ricasso is marked "WOODHEAD & HARTLEY / 36 HOWARD STREET / SHEFFIELD". The blade is undecorated and features a heavy gray patina with scattered blemishes. Thin oval-shaped silvered crossguard. The coffin-shaped handle features a set of smooth horn half-panels with a shield escutcheon on the obverse. The panels are held in place with 4 pins on each side. Large pommel features a raised beast consisting of the head and forelimbs of a horse and the torso and hindquarters of an alligator. The handle is in good condition with intact scales and nice patina to pommel. The pommel design was purportedly first used by Davy Crockett to describe keelboat pilot Mike Fink and part of the song "Hunters of Kentucky" commemorating Jackson's victory at New Orleans. The visual of a half-horse, half-alligator remained in American frontier folklore to describe someone equal parts strong and dangerous. Complete with its leather scabbard with tooled designs that resemble scales. German silver drag, which may be replaced, exhibits a nice patina. Scabbard exhibits scattered blemishes with intact belt loop. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 8 - 1/2" Overall Length: 12 - 3/4"

DESIREABLE WILL & FINCK TWINE WRAPPED HANDLE BOWIE KNIFE PHOTOGRAPHED IN 2 BOOKS.

Lot # 1435 (Sale Order: 294 of 324)

A fantastic example of a Will & Finck all steel, double edged, bowie knife with a large 7" spearpoint blade which forms into a wide ricasso that also functions as a crossguard. The ricasso is marked "WILL & FINCK / S.F. CAL.". This California knife maker needs no introduction to collectors, as their cutlery is highly desired by passionate enthusiasts. The blade exhibits great amounts of its original cross graining with scattered blemishes throughout. An older, light cleaning is exhibited on the blade. Handle is steel and wrapped with heavy twine that remains tight to the knife. Pommel is checkered on all sides and smooth on the top. Overall length is 13". The knife is housed in a brown leather scabbard that perfectly accommodates the impressive blade. The leather has formed around the shape of the wide ricasso, even the side that is flared, suggesting that they have been together for quite some time. Line engravings decorate the front of the scabbard and the belt loops remain intact. The scabbard exhibits tight stitching and remains pliable with a few scuffs from handling and wear. Light creasing by the belt loop. This knife is pictured on page 120 of "California's Best" as well as page 16 in "Knife Makers of Old San Francisco" in which it is described as once belonging to "a Pacific Coast sea-captain". This is a fantastic example of a documented Will & Finck knife that would be nearly impossible to upgrade. CONDITION: Very good. Accessories: Case, Scabbard. Blade Length: 7" Overall Length: 13"
