(A) RARE ENGRAVED NEW HAVEN NO. 2 NAVY BELT PISTOL.

Lot # 1297 (Sale Order: 156 of 324)

Manufactured circa 1857 to 1862, only an approximated 300 Navy models were produced with 6" "Belt" length barrels. This example is fitted with a ribbed barrel with bead front sight and faint 2-line address. The brass frame is silver plated and attractively engraved, as is scarcely encountered on the navy pistols. The foliate arabesque patterns with a very fine punch dot background cover the sides and top flats, extending around the hammer slot and down the back strap. As is rarely seen, this pistol is equipped with a set of matching smooth ivory grips, each panel marked on the interior with the serial number. Additionally, the inside of both grips is marked in ink “DAVID B. HUFFMAN / REAVILLE N.J. / 1945”, the right grip also with the notation “JEWELER”. The serial number is also found on the right side of the frame, lever, side plates, and internal parts. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel displays a mottled gray patina, cleaned a long time ago. Frame retains the majority of its original silver with flaking and wear, thinning to a mellow patina at the high areas and straps. Grips have a pleasant honey patina with age lines at the escutcheons and butt. Strong, bright bore with some mild oxidation spots. Action cycles appropriately, the follower is currently stuck. Magazine spring appears to be a replacement. Overall a very attractive and scarce specimen. Barrel Length: 6" Caliber/Bore: .41 Rocket Ball FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Volcanic Model: No. 2 Navy Serial Number: 2121

(A) IMPORTANT MARCELLUS HARTLEY INSCRIBED MASSACHUSETTS ARMS CO. SMITH PERCUSSION CARBINE.

Lot # 1298 (Sale Order: 157 of 324)

Manufactured from 1861 to 1865 for agents Poultney and Trimble of Baltimore, Maryland by the Massachusetts Arms Co., the Smith carbine saw significant use in the Civil War. This historic example is inscribed on the top of the receiver in Old English script to "Marcellus Hartley / S. H. & G.", notable arms and surplus dealer of Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham fame. By 1864, surplus production of Smith carbines and ammunition were made available in the Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham catalog. Marcellus Hartley also organized the purchase of 7,995 of the carbines as government surplus in 1901 for resale. It is very possible this carbine bearing Marcellus Hartley's inscription was presented to him or was acquired as a souvenir from one of these business ventures. The carbine remains in otherwise standard configuration. The blued half-octagon barrel is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and ladder rear. Characteristic agent and manufacturer stampings present on the case-hardened breech-loading percussion lock receiver. Walnut stocks are of nicer figure than usually encountered, mounted with early style sling swivel barrel band and plain steel butt plate. No martial inspector markings visible. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains the vast majority of its fading original rust blue. Case hardened components have faded to a silvery gray patina. Stocks are likewise very fine with mild impressions throughout and a coat of varnish. Bore displays sharp rifling throughout with some light areas of cleaned oxidation. Fine mechanics. A fantastic piece of Civil War surplus history! Barrel Length: 21 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .50 Percussion FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Mass. Arms Co. Model: Smith Carbine Serial Number: 9550

Manufactured circa 1870. Rifle sports a blued 24" octagon barrel with blade front sight and 900 yard graduated rear. Receiver is finished in gold wash and very attractively factory engraved in fine, clear Ulrich style. Although unsigned, the fine work has been attributed to the skilled hand of John Ulrich. The right side features a pair of game scene panels, a running hare and duck on water, surrounded in punch dot shaded foliate and floral scroll with decorative borders. The left features a tightly enclosed pointer and an open panel inscribed "Hon. Chas. E. DeLong". The left is also embellished with similar borders and scroll, the scrollwork attractively incorporating an eagle head and wolf head. The scrollwork continues onto the forend cap and crescent butt plate. Stocked in highly figured XXX grade walnut, as marked "GXXX" on the tang, with sling swivels also mounted on the nose cap and butt. Stock channel and inside of butt plate are marked with full, matching serial numbers. Tool trap retains an original 4-piece brass tipped iron wiping rod. Research indicates Charles DeLong was born in New York in 1832 and headed West to California in 1850, settling in Yuba County where he engaged in mining, bartending, and store keeping, before opening a law office in Marysville. He was elected to the State Legislature as a representative of Yuma in 1857, and in 1860 was elected as a State Senator. In 1864, DeLong served on the Constitutional Convention of Nevada. The newly elected President Grant appointed DeLong as Minister Resident of the United States at Japan, leaving for the East in 1869 and later elevated to the position of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in 1872. After returning from his diplomatic missions in 1874, DeLong passed away from typhoid fever in 1876. An included 2014 letter of provenance recalls this gun was passed down through the Shields family for five generations, originally acquired by Andrew Middleman Shields, who settled in Marysville, California, around 1849, where he owned the United States Hotel and Marysville Woolen Mill. The family is uncertain how exactly the rifle was acquired from DeLong, but there are many tantalizing possibilities. CONDITION: Overall fine. Barrel retains over 90% strong original factory blue with some thinning along the high edges, freckles and other minor losses. Magazine tube has largely faded to gray patina. Receiver exhibits an attractive mellow mustard patina highlighted with significant portions of original gold, retained especially in the protected areas and engraving. Loading gate displays very strong and bright nitre blue. Hammer retains most of its muted case colors. The lever largely faded to patina. Forend has a few scattered handling marks. The stock appears sanded, fitting somewhat shy to mounts with a repair at the wrist. Strong bore. Smooth mechanics. A truly outstanding Ulrich engraved Winchester with California history to boot. Barrel Length: 24" Caliber/Bore: .44 Henry Rimfire FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 Paperwork: Provenance Serial Number: 38576

Manufactured circa 1869. Blued 24" octagon barrel roll stamped on the top flat with 2-line Winchester address. German silver blade front sight and 900 yard graduated ladder rear sight. Brass 3rd Model receiver. Varnished straight grain walnut forend mounted with a a brass nose cap with iron sling swivel. Tool trap retains an original 4-piece brass tipped iron wiping rod. Importantly, the left side plate of this rifle is inscribed "S. Jenkins / from / J. Mc. A. Jr. / JANUARY 1st 1870." Rifle is attributed to Samuel Washington Jenkins, born in 1848 in Bryson City, North Carolina. After seeing five of his older brothers join up and fight for the Confederacy, Jenkins attempted to enlist at 16 years old but was rejected. He instead went to Maryville, Tennessee, where he joined the Union Army, claiming he was 18 years old. He mustered into the Third Regiment, Company L of the Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry Volunteers on June 17, 1864, and was soon promoted to Corporal. During his service, Jenkins helped deliver supplies to General Sherman on his March Through Georgia, in addition to seeing action at Okolona, Mississippi, and at Ivy Farm against Nathan Forest. Fighting against Forrest's cavalry again defending the Nashville and Decatur Railroad, they were forced to surrender on September 24, 1864, and were marched to Castle Morgan prison in Alabama, where he was held under brutal conditions until brought to the Union lines at Vicksburg in 1865 for a prisoner exchange. After the surrender at Appomattox, Jenkins and along with an estimated 2200 others, mostly former POWs, boarded the well-overloaded steamship Sultana bound for Ohio to be discharged. On April 27, the ship's boilers burst, causing the single deadliest maritime disaster in American history. Nearly 1200 perished. Jenkins was thrown from an upper deck and suffered a scrotal rupture but survived as a good swimmer and was picked up by a gunboat. After the War, Jenkins took up life as a physician before passing away in 1933. It is uncertain who presented this rifle or for what occasion. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel and magazine tube retain the vast majority of their factory blue with high edge wear and thinning. Brass displays a pleasant mottled golden patina as cleaned at some point long ago. Hammer retains faint traces of case color, the lever faded to brown patina. Stocks have some usual scattered nicks and an added coat of finish. A repair present on the left side of the wrist. Strong bore with well-defined rifling throughout and some freckles. Fine mechanics. A very nice, historic Winchester that would make a welcome addition to any collection of Winchesters or Civil War arms.
