LOT OF 3: "CONSIDERATIONS ON KEEPING NEGROES" PRINTED BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND 2 DOCUMENTS REGARDING

Lot # 2026 (Sale Order: 26 of 519)

Lot consists of: (A) Woolman, John, Slavery & Abolition, 8vo, marbled and red leather covers with gold gilt lettering on the spine. Collected works of early abolitionist and Quaker John Woolman. The first works printed in 1754, and Second Part offered here, printed in 1762, where he argues the abolitionist cause. His advocacy helped persuade the Philadelphia Quakers to officially endorse emancipation and become an important early anti-slavery force in America. Appears complete with all pages, that exhibit toning and scattered light blemishes. All text remains legible. CONDITION: Good. (B) 1807 dated slave appraisal in which "one Negro Boy named Sam" was appraised for 65 dollars. It appears that the boy was inherited by Henry and John Rhea from the estate of John Rhea. Edge wear with age toning and fold lines. All ink is legible. (C) 1837 dated receipt for the purchase of "a black female Servant Girl named Feebe" stating that the recipient Peter Garabrant can hold her in in accordance with "An act for the gradual abolition of Slavery, and other purposes respecting Slaves," that was passed by New Jersey Legislature on 24 February 1820. The act repealed the earlier slavery laws but essentially continued the procedure for manumission then in effect. The document is fragmented into 4 pieces with staining throughout. Despite the damage the text remains legible with bold ink in most areas. CONDITION: Fair. All ex-Lattimer Collection.

SILVER TANKARD ATTRIBUTED TO MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR THOMAS DUDLEY, EX-LATTIMER.

Lot # 2046 (Sale Order: 46 of 519)

This silver tankard with the Dudley family crest is from the Dr. John K. Lattimer collection and comes with his typed note card with annotations that it came from Walter O’Connor at the same time he purchased a sword attributed to Governor Dudley. The style of the tankard suggests this is Massachusetts Governor Joseph Dudley, 1647-1720, who held numerous political and administrative posts, among them Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay 1702-1715. The tankard is beautifully engraved with the Dudley family coat of arms in rococo style, a lion at center, and the motto underneath: “nec gladio nec arcu,” “neither by sword nor by bow.” Lattimer’s note dates the tankard about 1750, a bit late for the Governor, and also notes the presence on the tankard’s bottom of the repeated silversmith mark “A & GW” of Alfred and George Wells, active in Boston ca. 1804-1810, which would be too late for style of the tankard, though it could indicate rebuilding of an earlier piece. Dudley’s career was tumultuous, racked by internal political conflicts as well as troubles with Indians and the French. This is an impressive piece from one of Massachusetts’ foremost families. CONDITION: Good. Paperwork: Lattimer Notes

RARE BRUNSWICK PARTISAN WITH ORIGINAL HAFT AND SPIKE.

Lot # 2049 (Sale Order: 49 of 519)

For another example, see page 187 of Don Troiani's "Campaign to Saratoga - 1777". These partisans have an interesting history associated with them. There are only about a dozen known and they were used by captains of the Brunswick Regiment of German soldiers that fought in America during the Revolutionary War. These troops fought at the battles of Bennington and Saratoga. One such partisan was captured at Saratoga and taken as a trophy by John Stark of the 1st New Hampshire Regiment. He presented it to the State of Massachusetts, where it is still on display in their museum, along with other captured objects given to the state by Stark. The partisan itself measures 88" overall with the head measuring 13 - 1/2" from the tip to the end of the turnings. The iron straps measure 18 - 1/2". There is a cone-shaped 3 - 1/4" original spike at the base of the haft. The shaped blade section is engraved with the Hanoverian crown over mirrored slightly overlapped C's. Below is a banner inscribed "NUNQUAM RETRORSUM", meaning "Never Backward" in Latin. This was the motto in particular of the Order of St. George in the Kingdom of Hanover. The opposite side is engraved with the same crown over a large rampant horse with the same motto in the same banner below. Below the blade is a faceted S-shaped guard. The haft is original and has a dark finish with 4 holes drilled in it for hanging. CONDITION: Very good, iron components polished bright and engraving is crisp. Haft retains a very dark patina. An important and rare Revolutionary War partisan. Blade Length: 13 - 1/2" Overall Length: 88"

CORRECTION: This is Brunswick, not Hanoverian, although the design uses the same horse Hanoverian Horse and motto, but Hanoverian items do not have the crossed Cā€™s. Title amended.
