(A) AMERICAN USED PATTERN 1777 SHORT LAND BROWN BESS MUSKET.

Lot # 2077 (Sale Order: 77 of 519)

An untouched British Brown Bess Model 1777 musket from the Revolutionary War era. This musket, found in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, is all original except that it was converted to percussion, probably for Confederate use during the Civil War. Most likely this musket was captured and used by an American Soldier during the Revolutionary War and brought home after the war. It may have seen use in the War of 1812 and then converted to percussion and was likely used as a Confederate musket in the Civil War. The percussion conversion is the type done by gunsmiths providing Confederate weapons in the Shenandoah Valley. There is a nice period iron repair at the wrist and the musket has great original patina. Finding a musket that has American attributes in untouched condition is rare. Standard brass furniture and lock engraved "TOWER" at tail and engraved with large crown over "GR" in center, along with crown over broad arrow British ownership mark. CONDITION: In "attic" condition, completely untouched and unaltered. Dark patinas throughout with some wear and marks from use. Barrel Length: 41 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .75 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Tower Model: Pattern 1777 Brown Bess Serial Number: NSN

(A) AN IMPORTANT DOCUMENTED HISTORIC EARLY FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY LONGRIFLE IDENTIFIED TO JAMES FENIMORE

Lot # 2082 (Sale Order: 82 of 519)

This rifle is engraved to James Fenimore Cooper (1789 - 1851), author of the famous book "The Last of the Mohicans". His writings were centered around the fictional character Natty Bummpo. Cooper acknowledged that he was inspired by a well-known 18th-century mountain man. The research done regarding this rifle was compiled by renowned collectors Ed Louer and Gordon Barlow, who owned the rifle together for over 40 years. The rifle is attributed by the researchers to having been made in the mid-18th century in Augusta County, Virginia for a mountain man named Jack Hays. His family lived there, and the rifle was likely used on the frontier and reportedly (by oral tradition of the Hays family) used in the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812. According to family history, the rifle was given to James Fenimore Cooper by the Hays family in the early 19th century, where it remained until the early 20th century. It was then known by collectors to be in the possession of a Cooper descendent. It then went to the collection of Dr. Stryker, followed by the collection of John Chalapse. It was purchased from him by Ed Louer of Williamsport, Ohio, and he partnered with Gordon Barlow of Swoope, Virginia. According to Rachel Hays Walker and William Hays of McLean, Virginia, mountain man Jack Hays carried with him a very fine flintlock longrifle that was made by a neighbor gunsmith. According to a 1992 letter from William, John Brown Hays, son of Andrew, received the rifle from his father and carried it as a captain in the Revolutionary War. In the will of Major John Brown Hays (1808), son of Andrew Hays, he left the rifle to his son John Brown Hays, Jr., who carried it in the War of 1812. William Hays further states in his letter "When James Fenimore Cooper visited the Hays family at Stone Mountain Plantation in the 1830's, he gave the Hays family a frontier painting. Recognizing Cooper [s] fascination with Jack Hays, John Brown Hays, Jr. gave him the Hays family rifle that was once carried by Jack Hays." He says that Cooper actually used John Hays for his character Natty Bumppo in his novels. Cooper apparently had his name engraved on the rifle. According to the book "Hays Family History" by Rachel Hays Walker, written in 1894, she states: "Because of Mr. Cooper's fascination with the tales of Jack Hays and his longrifle and Mr. Cooper idolizing our relative Jack Hays as his Natty Bumppo character in his novels, my brother, John and I, gave our family longrifle to Mr. Cooper." The rifle itself is pictured on page 146 of George Shumway's "Longrifle Articles published in Muzzle Blasts 1965-2001, Vol. 2". George Shumway mentions in the description that it has an American maple stock. The rifle features a tapered octagon barrel with swamped muzzle, brass front blade sight and notched iron rear sight. The early convex banana lockplate is unmarked and features an unbridled pan. The engraved brass furniture appears to be European. Many of the early parts used in America were imported from abroad. The brass nosecap is decorated with gadrooning and appears to be of American style and manufacture. The buttplate is engraved with an old inscription "J FENIMORE COOPER" vertically. The full-length stock is of very early form with no toeplate, a wide 3-1/8" buttplate (across the center and excluding the patchbox) and carving of an early style. There are relief-carved acanthus designs around the barrel tang, in front of the triggerguard finial and behind the ramrod entry ferrule. There is also carving around the comb and on both sides. There are ornate c-scrolls carved on both sides of the long relief cheekpiece. Sideplate was lost during the period of use and carving was done to make the loss more attractive (brass washers were added behind screws). Complete with an 1896 publication of "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper with illustrations by Frank T. Merrill. Also included is a framed engraving of Fenimore Cooper framed with an original Cooper signed note that reads "very truly and faithfully yours, J. Fenimore Cooper". An extensive book on this rifle, the Hays family history, Walker family history, Fenimore Cooper history and other important research is included with the rifle. CONDITION: The rifle is as found and shows heavy use, consistent with having been used over a long period of time in multiple wars. There is heavy carry or saddle wear so extensive that the 4-1/2" of ramrod is exposed on the underside of the forend. The patchbox is a modern professional replacement and is very well matched. Wood shows some cracks, splinters lost around barrel, wear and marks from use. Brass furniture shows wear, buttplate worn through on top corner, and tang has a break. Ramrod entry ferrule tang shows losses and much of remaining ferrules have deteriorated. Barrel retains a dark patina with heavy pitting throughout. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration, does not hold on half-cock and retains a dark

(A) CONTEMPORARY SILVER MOUNTED LONGRIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO HACKER MARTIN.

Lot # 2086 (Sale Order: 86 of 519)

Hacker Martin was born in 1895 and learned to build guns the traditional Appalachian way from his grandfather. He is one of the 20th-century craftsmen credited with keeping the tradition of hand-built traditional American rifles alive into the 20th century and was an inspiration for many of the artisans working today. Many of Martin's rifles are crafted entirely from hand-made parts. This rifle is made with American walnut and has traditional silver blade front sight and notched rear sights with a rattlesnake tail that has been moving back on the barrel during the period as a shooter’s preference. The barrel at the breech is inscribed with the owner’s name "J KAULBACK" in large block letters. Kaulbach was an Alvin York shooter from Tennessee. This wonderful Hacker Martin (attributed) longrifle may be his masterpiece as it is silver mounted with silver inlay and engraved silver patchbox. There is a fantastic silver eagle inlaid on the cheek piece that is surrounded by inlaid silver wire and an inlaid silver star behind the cheek piece. The forestock has 25 silver inlays, including a silver inlaid eagle as the final to the rear ramrod pipe. The engraved nose cap, engraved trigger guard, engraved side plate, engraved toe plate, ramrod pipes, and butt plate are all made of silver. The best of all is 6” silver rattlesnake inlaid and engraved on the top of the rear stock as a final to the top portion of the butt plate. The lock is an engraved flintlock possibly made by William Paris, locksmith. The engraving appears to be the hand of Lester Smith working in Hacker Martin’s shop. CONDITION: Very good overall with an attractive untouched finish, aged patina on the silver, some minor marks from use. One of Hacker Martin’s most decorative longrifles. PROVENANCE: Gordon Barlow Collection. Barrel Length: 42" Caliber/Bore: .45 Rifled FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Hacker Martin Attributed Model: Kentucky Rifle Serial Number: NSN

Per "Charles Gordon: Magnificent Madness" by Donald Dallas, this shotgun was ordered from John Dickson and Sons on August 17th, 1893 as an 11 bore double muzzleloading sh...moreotgun with back action. Charles Gordon is famous for his patronage of John Dickson & Sons at the turn of the century, purchasing over 200 guns between 1875 and 1904, with some speculation that he was solely responsible for keeping John Dickson & Sons afloat. The shotgun remains in as ordered configuration with chain Damascus barrels with diminutive bead front sight on a smooth concave tapering rib, with "JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63 PRINCESS STREET EDINBURGH" engraved at rear. Case colored hooked breeches with bright, possibly unfired, nipples. Barrel tubes with typical British proofs, including JD&S proof, and serial number. Ramrod retained by three ferrules, one slotted for barrel key, feeding into a reinforced mouth. Barrel key retained by an escutcheon at forearm. Back action percussion locks engraved with scrollwork and vignette of snipe on the right, and quail on the left, signed "JOHN DICKSON & SONS" at rear. Case colored fishform hammers with scroll en suite. Double triggers protected by a wide bottom trigger guard with a dog who is alerting on a pair of pheasants that are on either side of serial number at tang, and a pineapple finial. Vacant silver oval at toe line, smooth high poolish English butt with a long spearpoint finial heel, depicting the dog chasing after snipes, one of which has already taken flight. Housed in the classic coral colored pigskin lined case with brass joint reinforcement and John Dickson trade label in lid, with accessories comprising pair turnscrews, a fouling scraper, capper, oil bottle, nipple wrench, mainspring vice, pair powder flasks, a large bone striker pot, a small ivory striker pot, and removable box with key, brass cylinders, and a small brass disk. Includes a classic Charles Gordon slipcover with "Charles Gordon, Esq.". CONDITION: Very good, barrels with the vast majority of their browning, with some spots of cleaned oxidation over rib legends and scattered handling marks. Action and furniture very good, with some silvering to sharp edges, but large majority of case colors are strong and engraving is crisp. Stock with some handling marks and rubs throughout, including a diamond pattern in finish from resting against pigskin for many years. Case is very good with some handling marks, missing two tools, and pull for the box, with some handling marks and age-appropriate wear. Slip with heavier wear, including a partially detached end flap.
