CONDITION: Pistols have been polished and show scattered pitting, engraving faint and barrels cannot be removed. Actions tight and function well. Grips show some age cracks on one pistol. Barrel and cylinder are finished in magnificent high polish blue with finely executed engraved foliates on the lug and over each chamber of the cylinder. Frame likewise engraved with "E. LEFAUCHEUX" patent marking on the recoil shield. Double action operated by a folding trigger. Grips are nicely checkered walnut. Revolver is housed in an attractive French fit hardwood presentation case with cleaning rod and turnscrew. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrel and cylinder retain bountiful amounts of brilliant blue with some edgewear and other minor loss. Frame and grip straps also retain significant portions of blue, areas fading to brown patina. Grips have some moderate wear and a few light marks. Strong bright bore with some cleaned oxidation. Crisp mechanics. Removable ejector rod retained on the underside of barrel with a single thimble. Dovetail mounted blade front sight and damaged rear. Fine grapevine motif engraved frame with finger spur trigger guard. Massive checkered walnut grip with engraved cap box butt cap. Housed in an attractive French fit oak case with cleaning rod, turnscrew, and oiler. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Barrel and cylinder retain the vast majority of their original blue with some edge wear and other marks. Frame has largely faded to an even gray patina. Engraving is sharp. Grips retain sharp checkering. Some minor impressions present, along with a few chips on the base. Very fine, bright and shiny bore. Crisp mechanics. Tall bead front sight and hammer notch rear. Blued 6-shot cylinder. Single action with case hardened frame. Case hardened trigger guard and backstrap of classic form with faceted lanyard loop grip cap. Grips are 2-piece walnut. Revolver is housed in a portioned dovetailed hardwood case with conical bullet mold, round ball mold combination tool, measure. Case liner marked in gold "LEFAUCHEUX / A PARIS". CONDITION: Fine. Barrel assembly retains significant portions of blue fading to brown patina. Cylinder blue much stronger with some light freckling throughout. This sword is published and can be seen on page 78 of Volume I of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords" by Daniel D. Hartzler. The slightly curved blade has a narrow fuller along the top on both sides. The large Latin phrase on right side translates to "Do not draw me without reason", while the other side translates to "Do not sheathe me without honor". The silver guard has a forward turned quillon and the reverse-P knuckle bow is stamped on the bottom with "I KUCHER" hallmark in a sunken rectangular cartouche for maker and silversmith Jacob Kucher of Philadelphia. The pommel is a silver knight's hemet with plume and visor. The grip is ivory with deep grooves. Complete with most of its original tooled black leather scabbard with scalloped silver mounts. CONDITION: Blade retains a light grey patina and engraving is excellent. Hilt shows a mellow grey patina with darker patina in protected areas. Hilt is tight to blade. Grip shows a worn period chip below pommel on left side. Scabbard missing about 4" at tip along with drag. Leather shows flaking and losses to surface, top mount damaged. The sword features a double-edged blade decorated on each side for over half its length with wonderfully etched patriotic and foliate motifs. The obverse features foliate scrolls that flank a panoply of arms and the reverse features a federal eagle with more foliate scrolls consisting of oak leaves and acorns. Blade remains bright with crisp etchings and very attractive appearance. Maker marked in script but the maker ID is obscured by the languet. Wide spread winged eagle crossguard. Nice mother of pearl grip scales that exhibit a few cracks and chipped edges. Knight head pommel with chain guard. The hilt retains generous amounts of its original gilding. US PRE CIVIL WAR KNIGHT HEAD POMMEL SWORD PRESENTED TO MAJOR GEORGE BRASTOW.

Lot # 2122 (Sale Order: 122 of 519)      

An elegant pre-Civil War knight head sword with a blade decorated for over half its length with beautifully etched and frosted panels that contain patriotic and foliate motifs. Scattered freckling throughout with bright finish and clean overall appearance. Beautiful gilded crossguard with languet that contains a federal eagle. Attractive engraved silver grip with engraved designs throughout its length. Gilded knight head pommel with 3-chain guard. Hilt retains nice amounts of its original gilding with patina to grip. The sword is complete with its original gilded scabbard that is marked by Ames on the reverse. Decorated mounts and drag. The scabbard retains nice amounts of its original gilding with scattered blemishes. The sword is engraved between the upper and middle mount and reads "Presented to / Major Geo. O. Brastow / 4th Regt. Lt. In. M.V.M. / With the / Respects of his numerous Friends / Augt. 21st 1854.” The Boston Evening Transcript covered the presentation of this sword at the “Pantheon Hall” as “A Splendid and Merited Testimonial.” Brastow (1811-1878) was an influential Massachusetts businessman “with an active interest in military affairs” and elected several times to the state legislature starting in 1849 and a state senator when given the sword. He was later a “Minute Man of ’61,” mobilizing in April as Captain, Co. I 5th Mass Volunteers, which served for three months and action at First Bull Run, losing 9 killed, 2 wounded, and 23 missing or captured. He mustered out 7/31/1862, and later served in the US Volunteers as Additional Paymaster with the rank of Major from August 1862 to March 1863. He served several more terms in the legislature, including as President of the Senate, and was Mayor of Somerville. His funeral was attended by several governors and generals. CONDITION: Good. Hilt retains generous traces of silver, grip very good with some age cracks and minor shipping around pommel. Scabbard in two pieces and drag is absent, slightly small for this blade. (B) A "Bolton/Upson" eagle head pommel saber with its original scabbard. Plain slightly curved blade with wide shallow fuller on each side. Early gilt brass hilt with four slot guard with gadrooned D-guard. Reeded ivory grip with plain ferrule at base. Complete its original tooled black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina. Hilt retains well over half of its original gilt finish, the remainder turned to dark mustard. Grip shows a couple hairline age cracks, pommel slightly loose. Lot consists of (A) Slightly curved blade with wide shallow single fuller on each side. Blued panels with etched rectangular panels within and gilded engraved designs, including an American eagle on one side and a panoply of arms on the other. Spine of blade stamped "PEMBERTON & Co." Brass hilt with chased languets, reverse-p knucklebow of alternating stars and balls, and horse head pommel with integral backstrap. Gadrooned bone grip. Complete with its leather scabbard with original silver-plated mounts. CONDITION: Blade has traces of blue and generous amounts of fading gold wash, some nicks to cutting edge. Hilt retains a dark unpolished copper patina, grip excellent with a couple hairline age cracks. Scabbard mounts retain generous traces of silver plating, leather excellent. (B) Blade features 2 etched panels on each side with long blued sections and engraved and gilded patriotic motifs. Brass hilt with quillon decorated on both sides with a flower, knucklebow of alternating leaves and balls and a horse head pommel. Bone grip with large checkered section and a band of repeating carved arrows. Complete with its original leather scabbard with silvered brass mounts. CONDITION: Blade retains much of its original blued and gilded finishes, some areas turned to brown, especially last 4" at the top. Some frosting to polished portions. Hilt retains an untouched dark mustard patina. Grip has a couple hairline age cracks and nearly invisible chips. Scabbard shows some losses to finish and crazing, mounts retain generous amounts of silver. A nice lot of horse head sabers. This cavalry saber features an ornate slightly curved blade with wide shallow center fuller on each side. Long shaped blued panels decorated on each side with two etched panels with panoplies of arms and foliate motifs. Top and bottom edges gilded on both sides. Engraved and gilded designs include a large American eagle with "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner on the right side and "WARRANTED" towards the ricasso. The left side has a large panoply of arms with liberty cap with floral and foliate motifs alternating between etched panels. The gilt brass hilt features ornate languets both chased with high relief American eagles and repeating ball borders. The reverse-p knucklebow is chased with repeating star designs. Detailed bridled horse head with integral faceted backstrap. High quality bone grip with panels of fluting and gadrooning. Complete with its original gilt brass scabbard. The front is extensively engraved with massive acanthus leaf designs on both sides of the top and middle mounts. In the center is a large American eagle with head turned to the left standing atop an American shield surrounded olive branches. About 12" at bottom above drag are engraved with a large liberty cap on top of a pole and extensive olive branches. Shaped drag. CONDITION: Blade retains about 95-98% original polish towards tip and 80-90% bright blue with some flaking and minor areas turned to plum. Most of gilt wash still present. Some light frosting in etched panels. Hilt retains nearly all of its original gilt finish with some minor wear to highest relief areas. Grip very good with a couple tiny chips along backstrap on left side. Scabbard retains generous amounts of gilt finish, especially in engraved and stippled areas, a couple small shallow dings to back side.
