Lot # 2472 (Sale Order: 472 of 519)

Nice example of a rare Pattern 1861 Dahlgren bowie bayonet, often referred to as the Plymouth Naval Rifle Bowie Knife Bayonet. Designed in 1856 by US Navy Admiral John A. B. Dahlgren for use aboard his ship, the USS Plymouth, this pattern of knife bayonet replaced the saber-style bayonet. These bayonets were produced for the US Navy by Ames Mfg. Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts, in September 1861. This example is marked “U.S.N. / D.R. / 1863” on the obverse ricasso and “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE, MASS.” on the reverse ricasso. The bayonet features an unfullered, bowie style, spear point blade that measures approximately 12" in length. The hilt is constructed of with heavy brass, 1-piece pommel, guard, and back strap with a 1-piece walnut finger grooved grip. The pommel is marked with the inspector mark “DR” for Daniel Reynolds, who inspected USN Ames Cutlasses and Dahlgren bayonets. The bayonet is complete with its original leather scabbard with brass mounts. CONDITION: The blade remains mostly bright with crisp markings and a light patina. The brass hilt exhibits a pleasing patina with scattered blemishes from age and handling. Wood grip remains intact and exhibits handling wear. The scabbard exhibits various cracks but remains firm . Brass mounts exhibit a dark patina. All retaining rivets present but drag is loose. Good overall. Blade Length: 12" Overall Length: 16 - 1/2"

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE T.A. POTTS PIKE HEAD BOWIE KNIFE.

Lot # 2473 (Sale Order: 473 of 519)

Though unmarked, this bayonet blade is an exact match with a specimen featured in the famous Ben Palmer Bowie knife collection bearing the maker-mark “T.A. Potts/ New Orleans/ 1840”. While the date of manufacture is open to conjecture, it is probable that these bayonets were not government issue but originated with state or militia troops. Although from the Civil War era, its attachment rings are too small to fit the standard .58 caliber Civil War rifle, nor does it come with any locking device. The intended use of this blade is a matter of some speculation, as described on page 66 of Abels' "Classic Bowie Knives" that it was likely intended as a combat knife that could also double as a pike head or bayonet, while Albaugh suggests on page 165 of "Confederate Edged Weapons" that the rings integral to the guard and pommel are too small for a rifle barrel or pike staff. These knives were believed to have been sold by Potts, a military outfitter in New Orleans, and similar examples are known to have been made by Rees Fitzpatrick of Natchez, Mississippi. The weapon is composed of a large bowie knife with a long clip point blade, fitted with a fine flat-sided wood grip and brass furniture. The guard and pommel are both thick brass. The front ring has a 1 - 1/8" exterior and 13/16" interior diameter, and the rear ring has a 1 - 3/8 inch exterior and a 13/16" inch interior. This specimen exhibits a pleasing patina throughout, with the gray hue on the blade scattered with areas of pitting and the pleasing mustard shade on the hilt. Grip exhibits handling wear with nice age. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 12" Overall Length: 17"

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE LASSO BOWIE KNIFE.

Lot # 2474 (Sale Order: 474 of 519)

A rare Confederate lasso bowie knife attributed to W.J. McElroy. The attribution to McElroy is made only from an account in the Macon Telegraph of a reporter's visit to the McElroy factory. In the newspaper report, the reporter mentions examining a lasso knife with a brass handle with a loop to attach a rope for throwing. For a similar example, see page 132 in "Confederate Bowie Knives". This example features a 14 - 3/4" spearpoint blade with a gray patina and spotting throughout its length. Edge wear throughout its length. Brass hilt with gilded finish and lasso hole at pommel. The grip exhibits scattered pockmarks with center indents that are typically encountered on these knives due to their hollow casting that would sink during the cooling process. 19 - 3/4" overall. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 14 - 3/4" Overall Length: 19 - 3/4"

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE T.A. POTTS PIKE HEAD BOWIE KNIFE.

Lot # 2475 (Sale Order: 475 of 519)

Though unmarked, this bayonet blade is an exact match with a specimen featured in the famous Ben Palmer Bowie knife collection bearing the maker-mark “T.A. Potts/ New Orleans/ 1840”. While the date of manufacture is open to conjecture, it is probable that these bayonets were not government issue but originated with state or militia troops. These knives were believed to have been sold by Potts, a military outfitter in New Orleans, and similar examples are known to have been made by Rees Fitzpatrick of Natchez, Mississippi. This example resembles a large bowie knife rather than a bayonet, as it has been altered and features a long clip point blade, fitted with a fine flat-sided wood grip and brass furniture. The guard and pommel are both thick brass. Rings are removed. Heavy patina throughout, with wear to the blade scattered with areas of pitting. Grip exhibits handling wear with nice age. Brass components were cleaned. CONDITION: Attic. Blade Length: 9" Overall Length: 13 - 5/8"
