CONFEDERATE MEMPHIS NOVELTY WORKS/LEECH & RIGDON BOWIE KNIFE.

Lot # 2476 (Sale Order: 476 of 519)

Thomas Leech & Co., also known as the Memphis Novelty Works is best known for the manufacture of sabers during the Civil War, but they also produced knives under the supervision of Charles Rigdon. When Memphis fell to the Union early in the war, Rigdon relocated to Columbus, Mississippi in March, 1862, and changed the firm’s name to Leech & Rigdon. This immense clip point bowie knife features a blade that measures approximately 14 - 3/4" with an overall length of 19 - 3/4". The blade width at the ricasso is 1 - 1/2". The knife features a sword style hilt with an S-shaped guard and a leather wrapped wood grip that is wrapped with single strands of brass wire. Capped with a sword pommel that was made from the same molds which were used for swords, but were specifically cast for knives. Age toning and a pleasing patina noted throughout, with a dark blade that exhibits edge wear and pitting. S-guard wobbles slightly and exhibits a pleasing patina that matches the pommel. Areas of leather loss to grip with tight wire that has darkened nicely. Some wire separation near pommel. A seldom encountered rebel blade with a menacing appearance. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 14 - 3/4" Overall Length: 19 - 3/4"

SAMUEL BELL ATTRIBUTED BOWIE KNIFE IN A RIKER MOUNT WITH S. BELL SPOONS.

Lot # 2494 (Sale Order: 494 of 519)

Circa 1830s - 1840s early example of a Bowie knife of the American form along with two silver spoons bearing the mark of 'S.BELL'. Consigned together, the previous owner was of the belief that the knife was made by the same man. Although the mark on the knife has long been worn off, this is most likely the early work of Samuel Bell of Knoxville, Tennessee, and later Texas. Overall knife measures 16" with an 11" clip point single edge blade with a 3 - 1/2" false edge. A characteristic and distinctive thickened bolster is forged integral at base of blade where it joins the hilt. German silver mounts on a coffin-shaped handle with two-piece ebony scales held in place with 6 small silver pins. Crossguard of silver that has been crudely repaired. CONDITION: Good. Blade has been heavily sharpened and cleaned, and has been rubbed with cold blue. Some traces of scattered pitting remain, mostly concentrated near the deeply pronounced choil and ricasso. Spoons are very good with clear stamps and jeweler engraved initials of previous owners. Blade Length: 11" Overall Length: 16"

WOODHEAD AND HARTLEY BOWIE WITH HORSE-ALLIGATOR POMMEL.

Lot # 2495 (Sale Order: 495 of 519)

Established in Sheffield in 1839, the firm of George Woodhead and Joshua Hartley is believed to have began crafting Bowie knives in 1841. Like many Sheffield cutlers, Woodhead and Hartley capitalized on American exports, feeding the American appetite for quality European blades. The example of their work features a clip point blade that measures 8 - 5/8" with a 6" false edge. Ricasso is marked "WOODHEAD & HARTLEY / 36 HOWARD STREET / SHEFFIELD". The blade is undecorated and features a gray patina with scattered blemishes. Thin oval shape silvered crossguard with dark patina. The coffin-shaped handle features a set of smooth horn half-panels with a shield escutcheon on reverse. The panels are held in place with 4 pins on each side. Large pommel features a raised beast consisting of the head and forelimbs of a horse and the torso and hind quarters of an alligator. The handle is in good condition with intact scales and nice patina to pommel. The pommel design was purportedly first used by Davy Crockett to describe keelboat pilot Mike Fink and part of the song "Hunters of Kentucky" commemorating Jackson's victory at New Orleans. The visual of a half-horse, half-alligator (hator) remained in American frontier folklore to describe someone equal parts strong and dangerous. Complete with its leather scabbard with silvered mounts. The leather body was redone as evidenced by the throat pinned through the belt loop. Scabbard exhibits scattered blemishes with patina to mounts. 2" area of separation at drag. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 8 - 1/4" Overall Length: 13"

J. LINGARD AND PEACROFT BOWIE.

Lot # 2498 (Sale Order: 498 of 519)

Circa 1840s - 1850s Sheffield made Bowie. Overall length 14 3/4" with a 10" clip point blade and a 7" false edge. Ricasso marked "J. LINGARD / PEACROFT / SHEFFIELD".
