WM JACKSON & CO. "RIO GRANDE CAMP KNIFE".

Lot # 2501 (Sale Order: 501 of 519)      

Manufactured circa 1860. Arguably the most recognizable Bowie knife in the hobby due to its association on the night of April 15th, 1865, the night Abraham Lincoln was murdered by John Wilkes Booth, as Booth and his conspirators used similar knives to carry their out their plot to assassinate the 16th president. Due to this association, no Bowie knife collection is complete without having at least 1 example. This particular Bowie features a large 10" spearpoint blade. Left side is stamped "RIO GRANDE CAMP KNIFE", and the ricasso is stamped by the maker "WM JACKSON & CO / SHEAF ISLAND WORKS / SHEFFIELD". The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered freckling and blemishes. Silvered crossguard with a moderate patina. Full tang with dark patina. Stag grip scales are held in place by 5 silvered pins on each side, and the obverse scale features a long escutcheon. Scales remain intact with 1 pin slightly bent on the reverse. A description of these knives can be found in the book titled "A Sure Defense" by Worthen and Zalesky on pages 400-401. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 10" Overall Length: 14 - 3/4"

Circa 19th century George Woodhead Sheffield bowie knife that features a 6 - 7/8" clip point blade with a 4 - 3/4" false edge. The obverse is completely decorated with beautifully etched panels that depict patriotic motifs. The blade is marked "G. WOODHEAD SHEFFIELD" just beneath the spine. The etched pane is mostly unmolested with clear motifs and phrases. Scattered freckling and blemishes are noted on either side of the blade. Nickel silvered crossguard with nice patina. Buffalo horn grip scales are held in place with 7 pins on each side, which highlight the shape of the coffin style handle. The grip scales exhibit scattered cracks and repairs. Silvered escutcheon on obverse side. Complete with its Moroccan leather scabbard that features tooled decorations around the borders. Silvered mounts with oval stud on throat and round chape. Light dents to mounts with nice patina. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 6 - 7/8" Overall Length: 11"

J. LINGARD BOWIE KNIFE.

Manufactured by John Lingard in Sheffield, England circa 1840s-1850s. Lingard was known as one of the "Little Mesters", small time knife makers located in Sheffield. These artisans often ran their blade-making businesses out of their homes, unlike the large factory firms that were beginning to appear in Sheffield. This knife features a 6 - 3/4" clip point blade with a 3" false edge. Obverse ricasso is marked "J. LINGARD / PEACHCROFT / SHEFFIELD". Blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered freckling and blemishes. German silver crossguard with repair to right side. Ivory grip scales exhibit a nicotine patina and are firmly secured by 4 pins on each side. There are a few cracks around the pins, and an "X" was carved on the reverse scale. German silver pommel matches the patina to the guard. Complete with its tooled leather sheath with German silver fittings. Drag has a dent and the throat retains its original stud. An interesting example of a circa 1860s bowie knife. The knife is unmarked but features a 9" blade, that appears to have started out with a spearpoint but was modified at some time in its life and now exhibits a clip point. The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered blemishes, with 1 large chunk missing on the obverse side toward the guard that possibly reveals file teeth. Wide iron crossguard with matching patina. Wood grip that is checkered on 1 side. Grip exhibits scattered cracks and abrasions. Square iron pommel. 14 - 1/2" overall. The knife is possibly Confederate or a frontier knife. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 9" Overall Length: 14 - 1/2"

GERMAN WWI KNIFE BY SOLINGEN WITH CHRISTMAS 1915 INSCRIPTION.

An interesting knife, manufactured by J.H. Becker, Solingen, and marked as such on the obverse blade. The knife features a 5 - 3/4" drop point blade with no ricasso. There is an inscription on the blade next to the maker that reads "Weihnachten 1915 vor Soissons" (Christmas 1915 from Soissons). The inscription is quite interesting as this knife was most likely carried by a German Soldier during World War I. Blade exhibits a moderate patina but still retains its shine in areas with scattered freckling. Stag grips remain intact and firmly secured to the tang with 3 pins on each side. The knife is complete with its leather scabbard that exhibits areas of creases and cracks. Belt loop and securing snap remain intact. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 5 - 3/4" Overall Length: 11 - 1/4"

The straight blade is stamped on the left side with Scagel's kris mark. Standard canted brass guard with leather, fiber, and silver spacers followed by a brass pinned crown stag handle. Nice example of a Joseph Rogers & Sons bowie knife with a 7 - 3/4" clip point blade and a 3 - 1/2" false edge. The blade is marked on the obverse "JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS / CUTLERS TO THEIR MAJESTIES / NO 6 NORFOLK STREET / SHEFFIELD. ENGLAND". Thick Ricasso. Blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered freckling and blemishes. Evidence of sharpening at edge. Nickel silver hilt with wide crossguard and ferrule. Rounded pommel. Stag grip scales exhibit handling wear and are firmly secured in place by 4 pins on each side. 12" overall length. Complete with its original leather scabbard that features scalloped nickel silver mounts and a nickel silver escutcheon on reverse with the initials "E.C.F." Scabbard body with several creases and light cracks, 1 break toward drag. Mounts exhibit a pleasing patina that matches the hilt. Drag is slightly loose. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 7 - 3/4" Overall Length: 12"
