HEDDON 100 DOWAGIAC UNDERWATER MINNOW IN AN UNUSUAL COLOR WITH INSERT & WOOD BOX

Lot # 1028 (Sale Order: 28 of 622)      

2 - 3/4” Length. This beautiful minnow is finished in what appears to be an intriguing early version of Rainbow. The red at the sides, is much higher and bolder than what you usually see. The bait itself is in solid Excellent condition with super clean all-nickel hardware, solid glass eyes, and a single belly weight. The pair of forward gill markings indicate this minnow was likely made around 1908. The box is a Type V variety and was used after 1907. It is solid and in extra nice condition and also grades Excellent. “The Why Of It” insert is about Very Good Plus and dates to 1906-07 and has one small tear and a little darkening at the edges, along with some darkening to the exposed front portion.

Middle lure is an uncatalogued 7509DRH Red Head Green Scale dating to the 1920s, with L-Rig hangers, a cracked right eye, and Very Good Plus paint. HEDDON FACTORY BOARD EXPERIMENTAL ROTARY LURE

3 - 1/2" Length. Varnished natural cedar body with a white stripe running down its back, it has a single forward-oriented, unmarked Heddon prop at the rear, while the front prop is an amalgamation of two unmarked Heddon prop blades sandwiched together and fixed to the front section. The body section has a belly weight behind the hook hanger aiding in keeping the bait balanced as the head rotates. A wonderful experimental piece that never made it to market.

Finished in white body, silver speckled, red head, occasionally referred to as the “Dedeaux” pattern. L-rig hardware, glass eyes with the left one having a hairline, and a bold red belly stencil. Bob was also a skilled and diverse tackle maker, creating unique fly reels, lures, bamboo rods, and also leathering old creels. His work was top notch and he was The Man to seek if you had an old reel that needed restoration or a part made. On September 26, 2011, Bob passed away in his shop. The world lost a good man that day… a Vietnam veteran, a father, a friend, a confidant, an artisan, a fly fisherman… an immensely talented individual.” Included in this lot are 3 beautiful Baird baits all in wooden boxes, Bob’s prototype “Wounded Frog”, his “#1 Floating Frog”, and a stunning Spinner in the style of Chapman’s “Montreal” bait adorned with peacock feathers and embossed hieroglyphics on the blade.

3 - 3/4” Length. Manufactured in Germany and sold in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this circa mid-1920s bait is very tough to find, especially with its rare box. The lure is finished in silver scales with red details and it has nice glass eyes. There is a metal dive plate at the mouth and the hooks are rigged with screw eyes and a fat, oval-shaped belly cup. The lure grades Very Good. The box is solid and grades at least Very Good Plus. Under “Kind” it is hand marked “D. J.” and the color code is “L”.

THE CREEK CHUB ICE DECOY

3 - 1/2" Length. CCBCo’s only commercially made ice fishing decoy and one of this company’s most valuable items overall. For years it was speculated that these were made from no. 1500 Injured Minnow bodies, but it has been confirmed that, in fact, these are made from no. 2100 Fintail Shiner bodies.
