INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF RAY THOMPSON SILK-WRAPPED FISHING TOOLS & LURES

Lot # 1254 (Sale Order: 254 of 622)

In the same style as one might find a fine bamboo rod, this set of 6 lures and 5 tools has all been given the same treatment of meticulously wrapping multicolored strands of silk in evenly spaced increments around the wooden parts, then sealing the work with varnish. Ray’s attention to detail is truly impressive and the story behind this set is an interesting one. Born in 1887, Ray lived in Park Rapids, MN and he was a barber and did odd jobs there. According to the Tonelli book, Ray would get himself arrested for poaching during the coldest winter months so he could spend them in the county jail living rent-free. It is believed that while he was locked up in the early 30s, Ray made these little works of art, as well as many other similar pieces. Ray died in 1966. The tools in the set include spreaders, disgorgers, and a flashlight. Of the lures featured, all date to the early 30s or before. Included are a Musky Vamp, Creek Chub Pikie Minnow with double line tie, an early South Bend Pike Oreno with the shovel lip, a Keeling Tom, and two Heddon Tadpollys with the early apple shaped dive lips.

THREE RIVERS WOODEN MINNOW IN BOX

Lot # 1256 (Sale Order: 256 of 622)

3 - 3/4" Length. An exceedingly rare and historically important combo. The full story between the Detroit Bait Co, makers of the North Channel Minnow, and W. A. Abel’s Delevan Minnow has yet to be fully illuminated, but the nearly identical construction of both minnows leaves little question about a link between the two. This particular bait is found much less frequently than the North Channel, and this one is in phenomenal condition. Brass wired-through in both directions, Wizard-style tube props, and those signature glass eyes filled with gold flakes. Three sets of hand painted gills, and two belly weights still retaining most of their paint. Very few of these boxes have survived, and this example is solid all around and showing just a bit of water staining. It is believed that Abel sold the “Three Rivers” Minnow just after the turn of the century.

EARLY UNKNOWN 5 HOOK MUSKY MINNOW

Lot # 1259 (Sale Order: 259 of 622)

Measuring 5 - 1/4" long, and likely dating to pre-1910, this unattributed bait figures to be an important piece in the history of early American wooden minnows. Most noticeable are the Ypsilanti Minnow style props riding on brass wire eyes and adorned with the same type of brass ring bearings you find on early Expert minnows. The side hooks are attached by through looped brass wires, both of which are well-executed, patinaed, and seemingly original to the lure. Both eyes are constructed from driving brass brads through domed brass washers. It has a long, recessed strip of lead running along the belly. The paint finish is a pure delight with a white belly and fully green back, and decorated with thickly applied red gills, lateral line, and spots. Lot # 1260 (Sale Order: 260 of 622)

Black back, aluminum belly with a pair of hand-painted gills. Condition is about Very Good or better on this important 3 - 1/2” bait.
