Lot # 1376 (Sale Order: 376 of 622)

Box: 6 - 3/4” x 5” x 1 - 1/4”. All three baits are in the rare aluminum finish, and all three have brass hardware with gold-washed cups. The two-hook Slopenose / Dowagiac Perfect Surface Casting Bait has a hand-painted red collar held in place by a single pin. The four-Hook Slopenose has the hand-painted red friction fit collar. The Underwater Expert has the internal belly weight and a nice sweeping blade prop. All three baits grade around Excellent Minus and the box is solid on all corners. This exact set is shown in The Heddon Legacy on pages 23 and 64. Without question one of the most important vintage fishing pieces ever to come to auction.

THE 13" HEDDON GIANT UNDERWATER MINNOW

Lot # 1377 (Sale Order: 377 of 622)

The 13 Inch Heddon Giant Underwater Minnow. A titanic, jaw-dropping behemoth, this 8 bellyweight monster is more than a foot long and dwarfs all other Dowagiac Minnows. Affectionately given the name “Big Baby” by a previous owner and obtained from the Heddon family that settled in California, this bait is a one-off special order for fishing in the Pacific. The nameless props and cup rig suggest this piece predates 1912. Oversize glass eyes are unique, and the Rainbow paint pattern, with its equal-size red stripes separated by yellow down the sides is typical of that finish in the 1909-12 seasons. This incredible bait appears to be in all-original condition, with wear from use, and a single missing tine from the front right treble. Almost certainly a unique specimen. If this bait could tell stories, they’d be priceless.

HEDDON NIGHT RADIANT MOONLIGHT BAIT IN BOX WITH PAPERWORK

Lot # 1378 (Sale Order: 378 of 622)

5” Length. Without question one of the rarest and most desirable of all Heddon baits. This exact set is pictured in The Heddon Legacy on page 90 and is described as being one of only a couple with a box and papers to have ever been found. The book goes on to suggest that “Probably a dozen of these baits are known to exist.” This is believed to be a correct and complete c. 1910 kit, the bulbous head bait, with its correctly marked No. 1000 labels at both ends and its “Care & Use” insert along with the “Special Notice” insert advising fishermen to bring their lanterns with them. The bait itself shows no signs of ever having been fished. There are some areas where the paint has flaked, mostly along age lines, therefore grading about net Very Good. It has clear glass eyes and the hardware is spotless. The box is in great condition, as are the two inserts, even allowing for evidence of the paperwork having at one time been pinned at the corners. An extremely impressive, never cataloged package originating from the factory archives.

HEDDON 707 MUSKY MINNOW IN SIENNA CRACKLEBACK IN INTRO BOX

Lot # 1379 (Sale Order: 379 of 622)

5 - 3/8” length. First appearing in 1909, these huge trolling minnows were sturdily built to live a hard life. In large part, this combo has escaped the heavy wear and toothmarks normally associated with such baits, and this 5 3/8-inch bait is among the finest preserved Heddon 700s known. Very tight varnish age lines with minor scattered varnish flakes, the underlying paint is in incredible condition. Considered to be one of Heddon’s most beautiful paint patterns, the sienna crackle is tight, giving way to broad red perch “bars” down the sides. 3 sets of hand painted gill marks and pristine glass eyes. Super clean hardware is all original with 5 massive, factory installed hooks. All 4 belly weights retain all of their original paint. The oversized, introductory box is just as impressive, and it is solid along all edges, and miraculously, absent of the water staining found on the majority of antique boxes. Printed with the matching color and model number, this boxed combo is one of the more extraordinary pieces of fishing history to come to auction.

HEDDON 700 MUSKY MINNOW IN SIENNA CRACKLEBACK

Lot # 1381 (Sale Order: 381 of 622)

5" Length. An extremely nice Swaybelly Musky Minnow in a color that was only catalogued from 1909-15. Although intended for trolling for larger fish, this bait clearly didn’t see much action. Although there is a bit of varnish loss, the paint is completely intact over the entirety of the bait, including over all four belly weights. Both props are incised with “Heddon’s Dowagiac” and both amber glass eyes are flawless. Of particular note is the bright, corrosion-free 100% original hardware. Easily grading Excellent Minus and possibly higher.

HEDDON KILLER MAROON BOX TRADE BAIT

Lot # 1384 (Sale Order: 384 of 622)

3 - 1/2" Length. This Heddon product, which was retailed by VL & A, is seldom seen. The bait is a 100% correct Heddon Trade Minnow, with the rounded line ties, two gill marks on each side, unmarked South Bend-shaped props, and the thick, rounded body. Both eyes are clear, and aside from a couple minute age lines and a tiny bit of bleed-through on the belly, this bait is nearly like new. The diamond border maroon box is an even rarer and highly collectible gem. The white label extends down one end and has the VL & A model number "5002" clearly stamped. Not many packages like this are known, especially not this nice.
