REDWING BLACKBIRD KINNEY BIRD

Lot # 1417 (Sale Order: 417 of 622)

A creation of Herbert Kinney of Tampa, Florida, starting in 1919 and originally produced under the name “H.A. Kinney Co.”, this legendary classic was not patented until his partnership with Heddon began in about 1927. By then, Kinney’s outfit was called “Old Hickory Rod & Tackle”, and with Heddon now painting each Kinney Bird, they took on a much more “finished” look. Heddon is known to have painted at least five distinct patterns on the Kinney Bird, but this relationship between the two was only to last between one and two years. There are two known sizes of Kinney Bird, this one coming in at the larger 4 - 1/8”. This example grades Very Good to Very Good Plus with a bit of varnish flaking and light hardware oxidation. Both glass eyes are blemish free. Originally advertised as “The World’s First Bird Lure”, this iconic bait with Michigan and Florida connections stands as one of the most coveted in Luredom.
