HEDDON SS8509PLXR “SILVER SALMON” RIGGED BASSER

Lot # 1164 (Sale Order: 164 of 622)

4” Length. Silver Salmon Bassers were cataloged with the “SS” prefix denoting the special string rigging; otherwise, the body shape and size matches the standard 8500 from the 1930s. These baits are not often found, as they were made for a very specific market in the PNW. This example will grade Good Plus. It’s seen some use with hook oxidation and likely fisherman-replaced string rig. Corrosion on the lip, age lines, and hairlines in the left eye. Still a very tough bait to find in respectable condition.

Lot # 1169 (Sale Order: 169 of 622)

HEDDON 1300 THIN BODY BLACK SUCKER

Lot # 1172 (Sale Order: 172 of 622)

According to the authors of The Heddon Legacy, there are only a “couple” examples in this form known to exist. They go on to state that this thin-bodied version is thought to be the very first version of the Black Sucker. This one is 5 - 1/2” long and features a cup-rigged belly treble set among five belly weights, and the rear hanger is simple screw eye. Marked front tube prop and perfect glass eyes. Finished in the “Sucker” pattern, the white belly turns to more of a bone color along the sides, then fades to olive on the back. The light silvery sheen along the sides makes it unique and overall, it grades strong Very Good Plus or perhaps slightly better.

HEDDON 2 HOOK RIMLESS CUP SLOPENOSE WITH BLACK PICTURE BOX

Lot # 1173 (Sale Order: 173 of 622)

4 - 1/4" Length. One of the rarest and most coveted pieces in this incredible collection. Dating to the first five or six weeks of Heddon production in early 1902, according to the owners of The Heddon Museum, there are currently three known examples of this introductory black box with silver printing. The box itself shows some even wear on the edges with one detached corner on the lid. The correct “chalky” white paint on the bait itself is showing wear as expected, as these very first baits came from the factory without varnish. You can clearly see the hand-painted, friction-fit, red-painted aluminum collar has been locked in place for over 120 years. Brass ties, tail cap, and most importantly rimless belly cup. It is reported that less than a dozen of these earliest Rimless Cup Slopenoses exist in collections today. The historical importance of this lot cannot be overstated, as precious few examples from Heddon’s earliest days have survived.

ONE OF THE 8 JAMES HEDDON HAND-CARVED FROGS

Lot # 1175 (Sale Order: 175 of 622)

3” Length. James Heddon hand-carved these Frogs in 1898 and all eight hung prominently on The Factory Board until the 1970s. The example being auctioned here is clearly visible and identifiable in the photos of the Factory Board both before and after it was rearranged. This particular Frog is further set apart by being one of only two from the group with a belly slot and having the hook eye pinned inside. The other belly-slot Frog from The Board has wrappings around its body and this example does not, thereby making it uniquely distinguished and easy to pick out in Board photos. Originally obtained from the Heddon Factory in June 1978 by Dudley Murphy, its pedigree is laid out in Harbin’s book Heddon Historical Footprints on page 236.01, and this very Frog is shown in Dudley Murphy’s “Blue Book” on page 26. A few of these original hand-carved baits have changed hands privately over the years, but the last verified occurrence of a Factory Board Frog selling at a public auction was a phone bid sale in July 1985! The lure itself measures 3” long and features a single hook tied to each rear leg, with its oversized black bead eyes really bringing it to life. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire one of - if not THE most - iconic artificial baits in existence. Its status among collectible lures ranks at the very top, and its historical importance cannot be overstated.
