HEDDON UNDERWATER EXPERT WITH HANGING BELLY WEIGHT

Lot # 1176 (Sale Order: 176 of 622)

3 - 1/4” Length. Appearing in The Heddon Legacy at the top of page 66, the book highlights some of this bait’s more historically important characteristics. Heddon felt that the external hanging belly weight was a superior bait feature in that it could be adjusted; however, this feature was gone on this model by 1903, just one year later. This belly weight appears original and is a treasure in itself. Also, the factory prop is the earliest found on Underwater Experts, with a rounded tip, bowtie-shaped appearance as opposed to the long, sweeping props produced later that year. Indeed it is likely this bait was produced in the first couple months of Heddon production in 1902. Gold-washed caps and cups with brass hangers and line tie. The hooks appear original and the paint is Good Plus or better. We know that at the moment, this bait is 122 years old, and The Legacy book estimates this is one of only three known examples.

HEDDON 102 DOWAGIAC UNDERWATER MINNOW IN PINE TREE BOX

Lot # 1182 (Sale Order: 182 of 622)

3” Length. The “Left-Leaping Bass” or “Pine Tree” box was only used in 1912 and is one of the rarest Heddon boxes to find. Interestingly, of the Heddon boxes depicting a fish, this is the only one with no lure in its mouth. This box is in nice, solid, Very Good or better condition, and is correctly marked 102 on both ends, which corresponds with the minnow’s White Body, Red Eyes, Slate Back coloring. The Minnow is in Excellent Minus condition with solid glass eyes, cup rig, unmarked props, and a single belly weight.

THE FACTORY BOARD HEDDON CHEATER DECOY IN SIENNA CRACKLEBACK

Lot # 1183 (Sale Order: 183 of 622)

5 - 5/8" Length. Appearing in the “Factory Archive Baits & Prototypes” section of the Heddon Legacy book at the top of page 180, this unique bait has four belly weights arranged very closely together directly under the line tie, which are positioned forward on the body so as to balance its swimming action. Forked inserted tail shows evidence of having been painted at one time and both glass eyes are solid. The cup rig hangers offer a clue as to when this interesting experimental bait was manufactured - likely sometime in the teens.

PAIR OF EXPERIMENTAL HEDDON ZARAGOSSA LURES

Lot # 1190 (Sale Order: 190 of 622)

Largest: 4 - 3/4” length. Both finished in Green Scale, neither of these baits saw commercial production. HEDDON 1809D SPECIAL FLIPPER IN BOX

Lot # 1196 (Sale Order: 196 of 622)

An extraordinary pairing, the Flipper being extra-thick and fully 4” long, this bait was made special for bigger fish. With clear glass eyes and just a few pointers and lines, the lure itself grades Excellent-. The front whisper prop has come loose from its tube mooring, but this is possibly repairable, or at the very least easily replaceable. The box is in great condition and it is clearly marked “1809D Spe” on one end. Yes, the Crab Wiggler used model number 1800, but D (Green Scale) was a catalogued color, so an 1809D Crab box is not likely to have “Spe” on it. The 1800 Crab Wiggler was discontinued in 1929, so there is some possibility Heddon used the newly vacated 1800 model number somewhere around 1930 for the special-order Musky Flipper.

HEDDON VAMP 7509BB MEADOW FROG SPECIAL

Lot # 1199 (Sale Order: 199 of 622)

4" Length. This color is quite scarce on the later surface rigged mid-century Vamps, but it is extremely rare on this c. 1920s L-rigged Vamp. Yellowish / bone base coat with black Frog Spots make for a striking pattern. Solid glass eyes, no belly stamp, and rear belly weight date this bait to the latter 1920s, and can be considered Type 6 according to Sawyer’s book.
