Earle E. Heikka (1910-1941) Bronze Horse c. 1934

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 746)

Featured in this lot is this original, exceedingly rare work of art bronze sculpture by Great Falls, Montana artist, Earle E. Heikka (1910-1941). Earle E. Heikka lived a short life of only thirty-one years, but, in that time, he created nearly two hundred pieces of art. The bronze features a wild horse, free of its saddle and harness, with beautiful detail showing the majesty of such a beautiful beast. The piece is signed “E.E. Heikka -34”, along with “18-30” and “(copyright) 75”. When he was only nineteen years old, Heikka attracted the attention of William A. Clark III, the grandson of Butte copper king, W. A. Clark. With Clark as his patron, Heikka began to achieve some recognition. With men like Marshall Field, Gary Cooper, and Con Kelley commissioning his work, Heikka's career seemed assured. But then on May 18, 1941, the young artist killed himself, ending his short but brilliant career. Heikka is in the ranks with C.M. Russell as one of Montana’s greatest artist, with his work having such great talent and his observation of a passing era of the American Cowboy being timeless. The condition of this bronze is good, with a heavy patina adorning the bronze horse and the ground of the bronze. The measurements of this bronze are 13 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 6 1/2".

Crow Buffalo Horn Headdress War Bonnet 1890-1900

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 746)

This is a very unique, rare Buffalo Horn headdress war bonnet with beadwork from the Crow Native American Indians of Montana from the late 19th Century to early 20th Cent...moreury. The war bonnet shows a heavy felt-like cap with trade thread sewn with a beaded brow strap, parfleche polychrome painted medallions at the temples, mountain goat fringe at the front and back with red stroud lining, and parfleche rawhide medallions holding Buffalo Bison horns, all showing a red ocher mineral pigment coloring. The top of the cap held American Bald Eagle and Hawk feathers with red stroud ties, a true attribution to the piece’s authentic early age (the feathers were removed to follow all laws). The back shows a strip of hide with hoof glue that is black and human hair-like. The headdress is likely an old Crow family piece that originates from the 19th Century and was altered/ repaired over the years. Rare & Early Sioux War Tomahawk by Henri Papin

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 18 of 746)

The lot features a rare and early war tomahawk attributed to the Sioux Native American Indians of South Dakota and from the early-to-mid-19th Century. The piece has a PAP...moreIN touch mark. Provenance: The war tomahawk is from the respected Cyrus Eaton collection of London, England and is said to date from circa 1820-1850’s, which is pre-Indian Wars era. The war club weapon is in the early “Missouri War Axe” style and features a hand-forged / blacksmith forged iron head with punch-dot decoration on both sides of the wide, flaring blade, along with filed lines over the eye hole. There is a pewter bullet led poured end cap with brass tacks at the top holding the wood haft, which is completely covered in one long wrap of Indian tanned buckskin, ending in long, frilly hide fringe that functions as the drop. The haft also features brass trade tacks, which are inlaid along the buckskin, holding it into place and running down the length of the haft in a spiral fashion. The right side of the blade shows a touch mark/maker’s mark/hallmark, which reads “PAPIN” in all capital letters and is stamped into the metal. This likely is reference to Henri Papin, a fur trader and blacksmith who married into the Choteau family and took over the business at Fort St. Louis when the Choteaus headed northwest up the Missouri River. The piece exhibits nice patina from honest Indian use and early age. This is from the Cyrus Eaton collection in London, England. The head measures 8.75 inches long by 5 inches wide across the bottom of the blade. The tomahawk is 20 inches long overall, with an additional 19 inch long fringe at the back.

American Indian Dag Fighting Knife Mid-19th C.

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 746)

This is an excellent, mid-19th Century, American Indian dag fighting knife attributed to the Plains region. American Indian early dag knives are commonly referred to as “...moreBeaver Paddle/ Beavertail” dag knives. This is due to the fact most dag knives were traded on the frontier along the Great Lakes region through the St. Lawrence Seaway westward by early fur traders. From the Great Lakes region on westward, the knives became very popular among the Northern Plains/Upper Plateau tribes, such as the Cree, Metis, Blackfoot, Nez Perce, Chippewa/Ojibiwa, and Shoshone. These were made to be killing weapons; this is why dag knives show a clean, long, double-sided blade without any serration, as they were for battle. Unlike other knives worn by Indian Warriors, the dag knife would have been worn around the Indian’s neck on his chest. This example shows a typical large, wide, tapering double edge blade with presentation like wood handle with round bolster area, diamond like gripping area, and round pommel, all being nicely adorned with brass trade tacks on both sides in varying patterns. The blade appears to be hand-forged metal. Overall, this is a large, heavy authentic example showing proper signs of true Native use and age. Measures overall 13 inches in length.
