Winchester Model 1873 .44 Cal Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 72 (Sale Order: 8 of 53)

Featured in this lot we have a Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle chambered in .44 caliber high condition example. The rifle was manufactured by Winchester Repeatin...moreg Arms Co in 1892. This is the classic “Gun That Won the West!” An early and very high condition example, this 131 year old Winchester still retains very fine even original blue on the receiver as well as fine deep factory blue on the 26" octagonal barrel and under barrel magazine with some natural aging. The receiver retains the original dust cover and remarkably, along with the loading gate (these often missing). The octagon barrel also retains excellent and clear Winchester markings as does the upper tang. Walnut butt stock shows very tight and desirable wood to metal fit, indicating this rifle’s wood has never been sanded or refinished. It correctly has the sliding brass door compartment in the butt plate for storing cleaning rods. This fine 1873 rifle with an overall length of approximately 45 inches, also retains excellent mechanics and strong springs with a solid safety half-cock on the hammer. The brass lifter on the receiver bottom is correctly and legibly engraved with “44 CAL” and shows an attractive mellow patina. The Model 1873 was the standard for lever actions throughout the Frontier Period in the West which, in some areas like Montana, lasted well into the twentieth century. The rifle shows good condition with some wear due to age and handling. The rifle weighs 8lbs 12oz. Serial Number: 444741. Winchester Model 1876 .45-70 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 73 (Sale Order: 9 of 53)

"Winchester 1876 early 2nd. Model .45-75 caliber sporting rifle, serial number 13144, made in 1880. The Model 1876 was Winchester’s first truly big bore repeating rifle. ...moreEssentially, it is a much larger version of their popular Model 1873 which was chambered for the “revolver length” cartridges .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20. The Model 1876 was designed for big game hunting primarily in the western part of the country where game much larger than eastern deer and black bear were commonly found. It is interesting to note that Theodore Roosevelt was a big fan of the Model 1876 and used several throughout the West that he had special ordered from Winchester. The Model 1876 was a serious specialized rifle that was made in limited quantities. It was replaced by the Model 1886 in that same year. This rifle with 28” round barrel is chambered in the powerful and popular caliber .45-75. This cartridge held a .45 caliber lead bullet weighing 350 grains in front of a full 75 grains of black powder. It was the most powerful .45 caliber offered in this model (the other being the lesser .45-60). This was a very potent cartridge that was used successfully on elk, grizzly bears and even buffalo, which were hunted in Montana as late as 1883. Most surviving 1876 rifles show very heavy frontier use and often abuse. The second model is identifiable by having the dust cover rail on top of the receiver held by screws. The final 3rd Model has this rail forged integral with the receiver top and lacks screws. This early example is in much finer condition than normally encountered today. The barrel, magazine and

(Marlin came out with their first in 1881 and Winchester in 1886). Only approximately 1500 of these sporting rifles were ever manufactured and surviving examples are almost never encountered today. This fine rifle is correctly stamped “A. BURGESS PATENTED JANY. 7TH 1873, PATENTED OCT 19TH 1875” on the upper tang, and on the 26” full octagon barrel “G. W. MORSE PATENTED OCT. 28TH 1856” as well as “45 CAL 70 GR C.F.” (for center fire cartridge). Colt Police Positive Special 32-20 W.C.F. Revolver

Lot # 107 (Sale Order: 14 of 53)

"Colt Police Positive Special in scarce and desirable .32-20 caliber. This is a near mint condition example with serial number 253963 indicating a manufacture date of 192...more2. The Police Positive Special was a double action revolver that could be fired by pulling back the hammer to the full cock position for slow aimed fire (single action) or by simply pulling the trigger which would revolve the cylinder and cock/release the hammer for fast firing (double action). Most of this model were chambered for the popular and common .38 Special cartridge with a much lesser production chambered in .32-20. This cartridge was often chosen by outdoors men who paired their handgun calibers with a rifle or carbine of the same caliber, such as a Winchester Model 1892 or Marlin Model 1894. As such, when encountered today, those so chambered usually exhibit excessive wear and use from field carry. Typically, a homeowner wanting a Colt for protection would purchase the .38 Special version and leave it in a bedside drawer and therefore are more frequently found in higher states of condition than the .32-20 version made for outdoor use. This example exhibits nearly all of the factory polished blue finish that would require close examination to find any wear at all. It displays all the correct sharp Colt markings including the iconic Rampant Colt on the left side of the frame and the barrel address and last patent date of 1905 on the barrel top. The hammer correctly shows fire blue on the top and rear portion with polished sides along with a fire blued trigger. The left side of the barrel has the Police Positive Special model marking along with “32-20 W.C.F.” (Winchester Center Fire) caliber marking. The hard rubber factory Colt marked grips are, like the rest of the revolver, in superb condition and show no wear. The action is crisp with tight cylinder lock-up and the bore is bright with some light corrosion that may

It is important to note that the revolutionary .30WCF round, introduced for the Model 1894 Winchester in the year 1895, was the first sporting cartridge made expressly for smokeless powder and became instantly popular. This rifle shows fine deep blue on the 26” octagon barrel along with some of the blue'd finish retained on the frame. The rifle shows replaced walnut stock with rubber butt pad, replaced fore grip and shortened magazine. The 1894 was one of the most popular of Winchester’s models and thousands are still used regularly today! The 1894 was also known as the “Klondike Model” as many found their way to the Yukon Gold Rush of the last years of the 1890s and into the 20th century. It was equally popular east and west of the Mississippi and big game hunter/conservationist Theodore Roosevelt was known to have used a Winchester 1894 in .30 WCF caliber very similar to this 1906 manufactured rifle. This 1894 shows a fixed rear sight with sharp and clear correct Winchester markings on the barrel and upper tang. The rifle shows a good action with some light sticking and good condition overall with wear and patina across the exterior due to use and age. The rifle weighs 7lbs 2oz. Serial Number: 808173. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
