RARE Sharps Model 1863 3 Band .52 Percussion Rifle

Lot # 74 (Sale Order: 10 of 57)

"Rare unaltered Sharps New Model 1863 three-band .52 caliber percussion military rifle. Only 6,150 of these long military breech loaders were produced for the Union forces during the Civil War. Additionally, a good number of these rifles were converted to cartridge after the Civil War, making an unaltered percussion example even more scarce. All of these rifles were issued and most saw very heavy use during the war. They were coveted by infantry soldiers fortunate enough to be issued a Sharps rifle when most were issued muzzle loading rifles. The Sharps breechloading system was fast and efficient. One simply dropped the lever to expose the chamber, insert a pre-wrapped paper cartridge containing powder and bullet, lift the lever, cock the hammer and either use the automatic

VERY RARE Winchester 1887 Lever 12 Gauge Shotgun

Lot # 107 (Sale Order: 13 of 57)

Very rare and early production Winchester 1887 Lever Action 12 Gauge Shotgun, serial number 34214, made the fourth year of production in 1891! This model was designed by John Browning and brought Winchester into the forefront of the repeating shotgun business. The 1887 was cherished for its reliability and fire power. Many were used by freight carriers like Wells Fargo, train guards, prison guards and lawmen of the West. Sportsmen who were used to handling lever action rifles also found favor with the 1887 lever action shotgun. Most examples found today show very hard frontier and field use and often display considerable abuse and replaced parts. This is an early example that retains all of its original parts. The metal surfaces are smooth and show an uncleaned mottled case color patina on the receiver. The barrel shows an attractive blue finish that appears to have only light normal thinning and retains a much better than usually encountered fine bore! The Winchester markings and patent dates on the lower tang are correct and sharp as is the “WRA Co” (Winchester Repeating Arms Company) entwined logo on the left side of the receiver. The screws are in fine condition. It further retains the original checkered steel shotgun butt plate (these often changed or replaced with rubber recoil pads), wood is unsanded and shows only typical light handling and no abuse. The wood also displays very tight wood to metal fit overall. Correct and original 32” barrel (this was the longest length barrel offered by Winchester for this model) retains the original brass bead front sight, mechanically crisp and tight. This 132 year old Winchester is a very difficult historical model to locate in any condition and this one is far above most that have survived to the present. Serial Number: 34214. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

RARE Marlin Model 1895 .40-82 Caliber Lever Rifle

Lot # 108 (Sale Order: 14 of 57)

"Exceedingly rare Antique Large Frame Marlin Model 1895 20” short rifle in scarce .40-82 caliber. The Marlin 1895 was made in very limited numbers and was manufactured just about the time when large bore black powder cartridge rifles were being replaced with “small bore” smokeless powder cartridge rifles chambered in calibers like .30-30 Winchester,.25-35 Winchester or .303 Savage etc. As a result of this transition, very few Model 1895 Marlins were produced. This example was made for the largest .40 caliber cartridge available for a lever action rifle. The .40-82 was simply the big .45-90 2.4” case necked down to accept a .40 caliber bullet. It had a relatively flat trajectory and offered power enough for any big game especially west of the Mississippi River. Standard barrel length for this rifle was 26,” but Marlin would provide any barrel length on a custom basis. The 20” barrel made a fine saddle rifle and since very few 1895s were produced as carbines, this was a viable option for horse saddle scabbard use. This rifle with serial number 185369 qualifies as an antique and can be shipped without requiring an FFL or C&R license. It retains excellent blue on the barrel. The case colored receiver has naturally aged to an attractive and uncleaned mottled gray/brown. There is fine blue on the

RARE Winchester 1873 .38-40 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 163 (Sale Order: 22 of 57)

Winchester 1873 EXTREMELY RARE SPECIAL ORDER EXTRA LONG 30 INCH octagon barrel rifle in desirable, large caliber .38-40 with non-standard special shotgun butt stock, serial number 106625 made during the Indian Wars/Frontier Period of 1882. Winchester made over 720,000 Model 1873 rifles and carbines. According to the standard reference: The Winchester Handbook, by George Madis, of this huge number of 1873s only 1201 rifles had barrels longer than the standard length of 24”. Madis further indicates only 1286 Model 1873s had special butt plates from the standard crescent butt plates on rifles and carbine butt plates on saddle ring carbines. Considering that Winchester offered extra long lengths all the way to 36” in round barrels, octagon barrels and half-octagon barrels, there could only be a handful of 30” length octagon barrel rifles manufactured...and of these the survival rate would have to be even smaller. Add to this the shotgun butt, this makes this rifle one of a very few in existence today. Interestingly, it seems most special order long barrel rifles were in the smaller caliber .32-20, again, making this example even more rare in the large .38-40 chambering. This is the classic “Gun That Won the West!” An early and fine condition example, this 141 year old Winchester still retains fine deep aged blue patina on the barrel and magazine. The special order long 30” octagon barrel also retains excellent and clear Winchester markings. Walnut butt stock is in very fine condition with only normal surface handling marks and shows very desirable tight wood to metal fit, indicating that this rifle’s wood has never been sanded. Like the barrel, the receiver is an uncleaned natural aged blue/plum patina. This fine 1873 rifle also retains a very tight action and strong springs. The sliding dust cover on the receiver top is intact (these are usually missing) and the loading gate retains good deep original blue. The un-polished brass lifter on the receiver bottom is correctly engraved with “38 CAL” and shows an attractive mellow patina. The lever catch is also intact. Additionally, it is fitted with a desirable Lyman tang sight, original buckhorn rear barrel sight with elevator bar intact and a small Rocky Mountain blade front sight. This superior, large caliber Model 1873 is in better condition than normally encountered on the collector market today. Even the bore is in good condition and shows strong rifling. A fine example of a rifle produced in a factory before the use of electricity that is as good and solid today as it was on the day it was made. The Model 1873 was the standard for lever actions throughout the Frontier Period in the West which, in some areas, lasted well into the twentieth century. Most surviving specimens show heavy use and often abuse with broken or missing parts making this example far better than normally encountered. This rifle, in the very rare and desirable extra long barrel length of 30 inches in the large caliber .38-40 plus special shotgun butt would be a prize for any Winchester or Old West collection. A rare opportunity to acquire a nearly unique Model 1873 special order rifle. Serial Number: 106625. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Plains Indian .72 Cal Percussion Blanket Musket

Lot # 164 (Sale Order: 23 of 57)

"Superb example of a Plains Indian “Blanket Gun” or “Buffalo Runner’s” cut-down percussion musket. Originally, these shortened, large caliber lightly rifled muskets were utilized by mounted horseman who galloped into herds of bison shooting guns and arrows at point blank range. Short barrreled muzzle loaders were about the only pre-cartridge firearms that could be quickly loaded while on horseback. Powder was poured, a naked ball was dropped, a percussion cap placed on the nipple below the cocked hammer and the firearm held muzzle high to keep the load settled. When ready to fire, the rider simply lowered the arm and fired before the ball had a chance to move off the powder
