Rare Eddie Beyuka (1920-2002) Kachina Bolo Large

This is an exceptional and scarce original Eddie (Edward) Beyuka (1920-2002) Zuni Kachina bolo tie with large size. Original authentic vintage pieces from Eddie are incre...moreasingly scarce with examples of this size and quality selling for as high as several thousand dollars. This piece was finished by his son Jonathan Beyuka after his his death and is signed J. Beyuka. The piece has a large size with multi-stone inlay, and is so large it has an incoprated stand, all done in sterling silver work. This is a Hoop Dancer Kachina or Katsina, a documented shape by Eddie himself. The dancer shows stones of Mother of Pearl, Turquoise, Coral, Labradorite, onyx, and at the feather along with head a stone similar to tortoise shell (not tortoise), possibly a horn. The large kachina bolo has a removable sterling and inlaid stand allowing the user to set the piece up on display. The bolo is on a thick large black leather strand and along with two tips with hoops and turquoise, mother of pearl and onyx in sterling silver. The bolo by itself measures 6"H by 4.25"W. The entire bolo measures 23.5" from the back of the neck to the end of the tips. Total weight is 92.5 grams.

Vintage Pawn Julius or Tom Ahasteen (Dine, 20th C)

This is a beautiful Vintage Pawn to Old Pawn piece from Julius or Tom Ahasteen (Navajo / Dine, 20th Century) showing a large concho belt. The piece is signed with a light...morening bolt running parallel with the "STERLING" mark, a hallmark attributed to Julius or Tom Ahasteen (also referred to as Julius A. Hasteen, Tom A. Hasteen, Ahasteen, or A. Hasteen). The piece a fantastic older age with classic tufa or sand cast sterling silver pattern being set at the center of each concho / concha with a large polished cabochon of turquoise. Each concha or concho slides onto the black leather belt showing two copper bands soldered on. The buckle is of a larger size and overall this is a nice late Old Pawn to early Vintage Pawn piece from the 20th Century. Measures overall from the end of the buckle to tip of the belt 51"L. The buckle is 3"L by 2 3/8"W. Each concho is 2.25" by 2". Total weight is 405.1 grams.

The lot features a late pawn Navajo sand-cast bracelet dating to circa 1950s. It is set at the top with a beautiful cabochon of Turquoise. The bracelet has a solid heavy ...moresterling silver construction with nice original patina, stamped design at the end and signed "W". The top shows a silver setting set with Royston mine Turquoise. There is a small crack at the top but appears to be solid. The bracelet has the original Sundog collection museum number of BV0818. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Mr. VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery. Measures 6 5/8" inside circumference wrist size which includes the 1.25"W opening. Box measurements of 2.75"L by 2"W by 1 3/8"D. Total weight of 60.2 grams.*

The naja squash bows a double bar pattern with concho ends and concho top set with a polished cabochon of Turquoise from the Morenci Turquoise Mine in an oval shape. The necklace is strung on a sterling silver chain link strand with double row of sterling silver concho/concha Navajo pearls and twenty two (22) fluted blossoms also in sterling silver. The piece is well kept showing a nice patina finish and no apparent damages. Necklace measures overall 28.5"L clasp to clasp with the naja pendant being 2.25" by 2.25". Total weight of 71 grams.*

The necklace features five (5) Cripple Creek turquoise cabochons set in a rope style border in a shadow box setting. The Cripple Creek turquoise cabochons feature light blue colors and various matrix styles and patterns. On the back of each cabochon it is stamped, "BT Sterling". The dangle earrings feature two Cripple Creek turquoise cabochons as well with a nice sea foam green color and brown matrix giving the stone a nice contrast. They are set in a rope style sterling border and stamped on the back, "BB Sterling". The necklace measures 19 1/4" L from clasp to clasp, and the cabochons measure 7/8" L x 7/8" W x 1/4" D. C. 1890- Blackfoot Split Buffalo Horn War Bonnet

Lot # 10 (Sale Order: 10 of 740)      

This is an outstanding beaded war bonnet headdress with split Buffalo Bison horns and "wormy" ermines dating to circa 1890-1900's from the Blackfoot / Blackfeet Native Am...moreerican Indians of the Northern Plains of Canada. The piece was purchased from Allard Auction in November 2002 where it had a $6,000 high value and has since been on display in a prominent Native American and Western / Wildlife art collection. The headdress war bonnet exhibits a thick Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide cap with original period correct glass trade seed bead geometric brow band, "wormy" ermine furs covering the entire cap along with split Great American Bison Buffalo horns connected with parfleche rawhide pieces and tied with Indian tanned hideat each tip along with a strand of solid brass round old trade beads, at the horns tips show four total solid brass old trade hawk bells, old red trade clothe covered in a banded linear geometric beadwork pattern with all old period glass trade seed beads and sinew wrapped horse tail hair fringes with a red dyed finish. The horns are framed in plume feathers and have strips of old trade clothe, ribbons, Indian hide fringes, and ermine tied on. The entire back of the bonnet shows red wool stroud wrapped ermine fur fringes framing the back of the neck, tied with Indian tanned fur. The piece is noted by the Allard experts as being a rare original piece that was restored to mint condition, with restoration work shown. The piece sits on a custom made display stand that is included. Provenance: From the outstanding collection of Lowell Baier, renowned Conservationist, Author, Historian, and Attorney. Some of Lowell's Native American collection and Art collection are on display in the halls of congress at the U.S. Capitol Building. Ermine covered original split horn war bonnet's are scarce with such examples selling for a premium, such as the Southern Plains example which sold at our February 2021 auction for $11,685 (w/ bp). The piece exhibits good condition as ti has been restored. The beaded brow band is sinew sewn with the wormy ermines covering the cap being cotton trade thread sewn. Little to no damages, supple hide. Displays very well. Has the original Allard Auction tag from 2002. Measures when on the stand 28.5"H by 13.75"W. The baste of the stand is 8.5" by 5.25".

Hess & Hopkins Studded Saddle & Studded Collar

Featured in this lot is a vintage Hess & Hopkins studded saddle, studded breast collar, and cinch from the early 1900s. Hess & Hopkins Leather Company was founded by Luth...moreer M. Hess & Theodore F. Hopkins after the Civil War in 1877. At the peak of operation, the Hess & Hopkins Company employed 450 individuals and tanned 350 + steer hides per day. They specialized in saddles, harness and a multitude of other leather goods. Mechanized farming and the automobile eroded the Hess & Hopkins Company’s clientele base over the coming years. Although the company was very versatile, it closed in 1960 following the death of Arthur T Hopkins, the son of Theodore F Hopkins. The craftsmanship & unique designs have made these saddles very sought after by collectors. This western saddle features a wonderfully and professionally crafted full leather construction with nickel studs throughout the saddle. The saddle maker's mark is seen on the seat reading, "Hess & Hopkins Rockford, Ill.". The saddle is adorned with nickel studs, white trim, conchos and tapaderos. The leather is hand-tooled with intricate designs throughout the saddle. The condition of this saddle is good with wear consistent with age and use. It shows some weathering to the leather and some wear to the wool lining the bottom of the saddle, but otherwise it is in good overall condition. The breast collar features nickel studs throughout and fine craftsmanship. It is in good condition. The measurements of this saddle are 26" L x 24" W x 34" H, while the seat measures 13 1/2" L. The breast collar measures approximately 44" L x 16 1/2" W.*

This finely crafted bridle is adorned in nickel studs and intricat...moree hand-tooled leather designs. It also features nickel conchos with rawhide fringe coming through the middle. The bridle has no maker's mark but was produced by Hess & Hopkins in the early 1900s. The Crockett curb bit is beautifully engraved on both sides with intricate designs. Its maker's mark is on the inside of the curb bit reads, "Crockett". The bridle comes with the original leather reins. The measurements of this bridle are 28" L x 7" W. The reins measure 68" in length.*

A master sculptor, Oreland is world renowned for his work in stone and bronze, and is primarily known for his work with marble, alabaster and limestone. His accomplishments are numerous with one being the first Native American to be admitted to the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America in 1993. His works can be found in private, corporate and museum collections in the United States and abroad. Oreland is of Diné (Navajo) and Ute descent. The pale brown, reddish veined sculpture is in good overall condition with no marring noted. It measures12.25"H, 3" x 3" at the base.

Featured in this lot is a Pima Akimel O'odhma polychrome hand woven basket tray circa early 1900s. The basket features a wonderfully and professionally crafted devil's cl...moreaw and willow construction with a beautifully designed geometric pattern woven into the center. The side walls of the basket show polychrome coloration of brown and black. The basket is tightly woven and shows great preservation despite its age. Pima, North American Indians traditionally lived along the Gila and Salt Rivers in Arizona, U.S., in what was the core area of the prehistoric Hohokam culture. The Pima, who speak a Uto-Aztecan language and call themselves the “River People,” are usually considered to be the descendants of the Hohokam. The Pima People are well known for their basket weaving craftsmanship. The condition of this basket tray is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this basket tray are 2 1/4" x 16 1/2" x 16 1/2". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Collection in Bozeman, Montana and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Mr. VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. 19th Century Cheyenne Beaded Sheath & Trade Knife

The lot features a fantastic 19th Century Northern Cheyenne beaded sheath and trade knife. The sheath is comprised of parfleched Buffalo Bison hide that is covered in bea...moreutiful period correct glass trade beads in a typical Cheyenne beadwork pattern. The beads show colors of greasy blue, cobalt, greasy yellow, semi-transparent rose, chalk white. The bottom of the sheath shows two hide fringes that are completely covered in beadwork. About halfway down the sheath, below that section and at the bottom of the fringes show original rolled tin cone dangles as well as some strips of hide and dyed red horsetail hair. The sheath shows a dark yellow / red ocher mineral pigment coloring and has a braided tie strap with brass trade beads at the top. The sheath is paired with an old clip point bowi-like thick heavy trade knife with nice clear maker's mark on the side. The knife shows coffin like two-piece beveled hardwood handles with copper rivets securing it to the tang and further adorned with old brass trade tacks in circle and cross patterns. The original set is well preserved with little to no bead loss and expected wear from honest age and use. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dale Harrison Cincinnati, Ohio. Sheath measures 10 inches long (not including bottom fringe) by 3 ½ inches wide. Trade knife is 11 ½ inches long.*

This is an exceptional 19th Century Sioux beaded sheath and trade knife. The sheath is comprised of Indian tanned and parfleched Buffalo Bison hide with geometric beadwor...morek done in all early period glass trade seed beads. The beadwork shows colors of greasy blue, black, semi-transparent rose, greasy white / chalk white, and greasy butterscotch yellow. This was collected from the Standing Rock Sioux in North Dakota (the same as Sitting Bull and his band) and is nearly identical to sheath from Sitting Bull pictured on page 31 of John Baldwin’s 2006 book “Indian Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier”; It is very possibly from the same artisan of the tribe as our piece. Baldwin also noted a pair of Hunkpapa Sioux Standing Rock moccasins attributed to Sitting Bull in the same manner as this piece. The original tie-strap is shown on the back. The sheath is paired with an old trade knife with bone handles, pewter hilt and clear maker's mark from Hawley Brothers, a German trade knife. The set is well preserved with little to no bead loss. Truly a beautiful set. The pictures shows an example of the Baldwin page and Sitting Bull. Provenance: Ex-collection of Dale Harrison Cincinnati, Ohio. Sheath measures 10 ¾ inches in length by 3 ½ inches wide. Knife is 12 inches in length.*

C. 1860 Sioux Polychrome Parfleche Elliptical Case

This is an exceptional authentic, original polychrome painted parfleche elliptical case from circa 1860-1870 Sioux Native American Indians from the Lowell Baier collectio...moren, previously sold by Allard Auction in their circa 2000 Santa Fe Auction. The parfleche rawhide piece shows a large size and is referred to as an elliptical case due to its base having an elliptical shape and curved outside body. The piece is similar to the more common headdress bonnet case and shows a tall body being one piece with a round tapering shape sewn together on one side sewn with thick sinew and shows long Indian tanned hide frilly fringes. The fringes are along the bottom elliptical end. The top tie straps holding the flap opening closed and the belt tie or saddle tie top are both still intact, both being Indian tanned hide. The piece was noted as being a Sioux Medicine Bag from the previous collector. The bag is an absolutely gorgeous work of art showing fine traditional Sioux geometric polychrome painted designs done in colors of blue, red, yellow, green with black outlines. The paint is all mineral pigment natural dyes shown on both sides with some slight loss, from honest age and use. The original Allard Auction from their 2000 Santa Fe auction is still present, showing lot number 320G. For other examples of rare elliptical cases see the Charles Zimmerman 19th Century elliptical case from the Nebraska State Historical Society, the 1880 elliptical case from the Donald Ellis Gallery and the 1840 elliptical case from the Thomas Cleary Gallery. He was best known for his bronzes depicting birds, although his skill and versatility enabled him to produce quality horse sculptures (primarily racehorses), dog sculptures and hunting scenes.
