Ca. 1890's Sioux U.S. Soldier Photos by Fansler

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 728)

"This is an excellent circa 1890’s U.S. Infantry Indian Wars era Sioux Soldier cabinet card photographs by Fuller and Fansler from the ex-collection of the C.M. Russell M...moreuseum and John Kleinschmidt. The lot shows three original Fuller and Fansler cabinet card photographs depict three Sioux Native American men that are in their United States Infantry uniforms from Fort Yates, North Dakota one of which is identified as White Bird Soldier. John Henry and Jemima Parsons Fansler of Leadmine, West Virginia, gave birth to Stephen Truman Fansler on December 4, 1866. He had five brothers and two sisters. Fansler was a teacher who attended the Missouri School of Business in Cincinnati, Ohio, before entering the 8th Cavalry on October 18, 1890. He was a sharpshooter assigned to Fort Yates, a military installation on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which lies on the boundary of North and South Dakota. Following his honorable discharge in 1892, he became the post photographer and established a studio with Clarence Fuller, another local photographer. In addition to photos of post officials and soldiers, Fansler photographed the Dakotah Sioux and other local American Indians. During this period, Fansler hired a young apprentice called Frank Bennett Fiske. Fiske, the post's civilian wagon master's son, had developed an interest in photography and American Indian culture from an early age. Fansler, in a sense, helped Fiske develop his emerging photography skills by teaching him typical techniques of the day, such as glass-plate negatives and solar printing procedures. The first photo shows a Native American soldier sitting in a chair holding his rifle in his hands as he wears fur gloves and hat and an ammo belt. The second photo shows another Native American soldier. He is standing in his photo as he holds his rifle and wears an ammo belt and hat. He is looking directly towards the viewer. The final photo shows a Native American soldier sitting with his wife and child as they get their photo taken. The man is wearing his calvary uniform and was in the I Company according to the letter on his cap. The woman sits to his left and their child sits in between them. Only one photo is marked ""Fuller & Fansler, Ft. Yates, N. Dak."" but the others show the same props and background as the marked photo, showing they are in fact Fuller & Fansler photos. They show good condition overall with little wear present from their age and handling over the years, but no signs of damage is noted. They measure 6 1/2"" L x 4 1/4"" W.

D.F. Barry (1854-1934) Koska Grave Site Photo

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 728)

"Featured in this lot is this amazing, silver gelatin D.F. Barry (1854-1934) photo titled, ""Sioux Burial"", from the ex-collection of the C.M. Russell Museum and John Kl...moreeinschmidt. David Francis Barry (1854-1934) was one of the most noted photographers of the American Indian and U.S. Army participants in the Sioux War of 1876 and is attributed with some of the most recognizable surviving images from this period in the history of the American West. Barry first came to the west in the 1870’s to apprentice under photographer O.S. Goff, who worked as the photographer at Fort Abraham Lincoln. It was from this post the Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh U.S. Cavalry division in May 1876 to the battle of the Little Bighorn in southwestern Montana. This is considered one of the largest collection of Barry photographs from one historic Montana family offered for public sale. The photo shows two burial sites in two trees, with one being Koska's grave site, the son of Chief Rain-In-The-Face and the other an unnamed Native American. The Sioux traditionally placed their deceased on platforms in trees or on scaffolds, a practice called ""tree burial,"" because they believed it allowed the spirit of the dead to more easily ascend to the sky on their journey to the afterlife, bringing them closer to the heavens and facilitating communication with the deceased by their loved ones who could easily access the elevated body; this practice also helped protect the body from animals that might disturb a ground burial. The photo is blind-stamped in the bottom center reading, ""Barry"". Included with the photo is a correspondence letter between D.F. Barry and John Kleinschmidt talking about he (Barry) has just mailed more photos to Kleinschmidt and another woman. He also talks about a Sitting Bull photo he has when Sitting Bull was at the agency. The photo is set in a silver colored metal frame and sits behind glass to preserve its already good condition. Two museum tags are featured on the piece from the C.M. Russell in Great Falls, Montana. The first tag is glued to the front of the glass reading, ""Sioux Burial"" while the second tag reads, ""1396-87 O'Dell"". The photo measures 9"" L x 7"" W, while the entire piece measures 10 1/8"" L x 8 1/8"" W x 1/2"" D. It weighs 1 pound.
