In the process, Buffalo Bill's pop interpretation of the American frontier was validated as high culture and for the next five years the Wild West toured the major capitals of Europe. Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 9 of 709)

This is a rare, original albumen photograph dating to circa 1870s-1880s showing Fort Sully near Pierre, South Dakota. The photo shows the U.S. Army members playing a frie...morendly game of American baseball. Early baseball photos from the Indian Wars era on the Plains are incredibly rare. The photograph is by R.L. Kelly of Pierre, South Dakota Territory. He is said to have taken photographs as early as the 1860s-1870s from the Pierre, South Dakota Territory. He later worked with partner, M.B. Odell of Deadwood, South Dakota who is known for taking the iconic photograph of Sitting Bull with a Monarch Butterfly pinned to his hat in 1883. The photograph shows some of the Officer barracks with a group of U.S. Infantry and Cavalry men playing a game of baseball. Looking closely you can see the men lined up on the baseball diamond with someone having just hit a run and racing towards first base. You can clearly see one of the outfielders' or shortstop's baseball glove at their side. A grouping of players in baseball uniforms can be seen on the right in front of likely officer tents viewing the game and on the left many more soldiers on looking. Riders of the Purple Sage by Z. Grey 1912 1st Ed

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 13 of 709)

For your consideration is this 1912 1st edition of Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey, published by Harper & Brothers. A prolific American writer known for his sign...moreificant contributions to Western literature in the early 20th century, Zane Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1872. Although he started out as a successful dentist, he soon realized that writing, especially about the American West, was his true calling. Unquestionably, Grey had an impact on the Western subgenre, as his books contributed to the genre's rise to literary fame. His writings were renowned for their vivid depictions of untamed landscapes, cowboys, and the difficulties of frontier life, and his readers were transported to the West by his descriptive prose. He wrote more than 60 novels and a large number of short stories over the course of his career, including well-known pieces like Riders of the Purple Sage, The Lone Star Ranger, and The Last of the Plainsmen. These books were wildly popular in his day and are still highly regarded by fans of the Old West and those who are interested in the history of the American frontier. Grey left a lasting legacy that goes beyond literature thanks to his conservation efforts, close friendship with Theodore Roosevelt, and support for safeguarding the natural splendor of the American West. When it was first released in 1912, Riders of the Purple Sage became one of Zane Grey's most well-known and enduring Western books. It is a classic of the Western genre and is set against the backdrop of the unforgiving and untamed American West. The story follows Jane Withersteen, the protagonist, a self-reliant woman with a successful cattle ranch in the border region of Utah. When Jane rejects the oppressive and morally rigid rule of the local Mormon church, her life takes a dramatic turn. Later, a mysterious gun-wielding rider, shows up amid all of this commotion. He becomes involved in Jane's struggle to defend her ranch and her independence. The gunman, Lassiter, is motivated by his own desire for retribution and justice. To combat the corrupt and oppressive forces that jeopardize Jane's freedom and way of life, they come together in an unlikely alliance. Secrets come to light as the plot develops, and Lassiter, who is determined to keep Jane safe, falls in love. The book examines issues like social justice, religious intolerance, and the struggle in the American West between individual freedom and governmental authority. The book shows a rare, all green cover with a stamped design set in the center. The spine shows stamped floral designs and gold gilt lettering reading, Riders of the Purple Sage / Zane Grey / Tales of the Frontier . The book shows good condition overall with some wear from its age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage are present. The interior pages show good condition with no foxing present. The book measures 7 3/4 L x 5 W x 1 1/2 D and weighs 14 ounces.

Ca. 1890 James Mooney Ghost Dance Photograph

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 14 of 709)

This is an original circa 1890, albumen photograph from James Mooney showing the Ghost Dance amongst the Arapaho and Cheyenne people. This is from the Jim Aplan, Piedmont...more, South Dakota collection and the back is marked, “James Mooney Ghost Dance”. James Mooney (1861-1921) was an American ethnographer and photographer who focused on Native Americans. In 1885, Mooney began working for the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) under John Wesley Powell. For the next 30 years, he was considered one of the prominent ethnographic researchers and was an early adopter of photography. In December 1890, he was documented as visiting Oklahoma Territory to complete research with Western Cherokee and witnessed the Ghost Dance at the Cheyenne Arapaho Reservation for the first time. Further, during 1891-1893, he studied the Ghost Dance movement by observing the Arapaho, Sioux, Kiowa, and Cheyenne. He photographed the Kiowa Mescal Peyote Ceremony and Oglala Sioux Ghost Dance in 1892 and later returned to Oklahoma Territory to observe and record Arapaho Sun Dance and also studied the Hopi Kachina Dance, the Wichita Corn Dance and possibly the Arapaho Ghost Dance. Later in 1896, publishing “The Ghost Dance Religion and the Sioux Outbreaks of 1890”. (See the Smithsonian National Museum of National History: James Mooney photographs, circa 1872-1920 by Eden Orelove and Gina Rappaport, October 2021). This is truly an extremely important and rare image captured by James Mooney which documents the famous Ghost Dance movement. Viewing the Ghost Dance among the Lakota as a threat, the U.S. Army killed Sitting Bull, and soon after, spotted Elk. This threat also led to the Wounded Knee Massacre. The Ghost Dance came from the teachings of Jack Wilson, known as Wovoka, making the Ghost Dance an integral part of their religion and system of mystical beliefs. The image shows several Arapaho and Cheyenne Native Americans performing the Ghost Dance with many onlookers having curved edges in the image on a boudoir card, marked on the back as being taken by James Mooney and the Ghost Dance. Some slight edge damage, but overall, it is well kept. After reviewing the Ghost Dance Photographs by James Mooney 1890 with curved border in the Ghost Dance US collection as well as the Ghost Dance photographs from PBA Galleries 2023, valued at $20,000-$30,000. This image, being not only marked as such, is confirmed to be by James Mooney. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan collection, Piedmont, South Dakota. Measures 8.5”L x 6.5”W.*

19th C. Thai Gilt Rattanakosin Sitting Buddha

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 19 of 709)

Presented in this lot is a Large Thai Gilt Rattanakosin Period Sitting Buddha Statue. circa 19th Century. The Rattanakosin Kingdom, the Kingdom of Siam, or the Early Bang...morekok Empire were names used to reference the fourth and current Thai kingdom in the history of Thailand. The prominent form of Buddhism practised in Thailand is Theravada Buddhism. Followers of Theravada Buddhism take refuge in the 'Triple Gem': the teacher (Buddha), the teaching (dhamma) and the monastic community (the Sangha). Various major forces have influenced the development of Buddhism in Thailand. By far the most dominant and influential tradition is the Theravada school, which arrived from Sri Lanka during the medieval era. Because of this, Thai Buddhism has close ties with the Buddhism of other Southeast Asian countries, like Burma. This finely cast image bronze is made of cast bronze and gilded over red and black lacquer undercoats. Features the Buddha dressed as a monk with his right shoulder bare while sitting cross-legged in the dhyanasana, the meditation position, on a tiered throne. The image's right hand is in the earth-touching (bhumisparsha mudra) position, the left hand holding the stem of a talipot (prayer fan). Head with tightly coiled curls and no ushnisha. Most Buddha images have a cranial protuberance, but those of the late nineteenth century sometimes lack them. This practice arose during the reign of King Rama IV (1851-1868) during which the kingdom became more exposed to European inflences and there was an attempt to humanize the Buddha. Further attempts to humanize the buddha are apparent in this image as the face is serene and realistically portrayed, the hair is in neat small curls that have more of a naturalistic appearance than traditional depictions. The fingers and ears are elongated as is seen in traditional Thai temple art, known as chinlon . This technique is said to have been developed in the early Ayutthaya period and is still used today. Much of the gold gilt remains as well as the red lacquer. Two solid rings are attached to the back side. Measures 13 H on a 7 x 7 x 11.25 pyramid. Weight approximate 18lb, 6oz.

This powerful depiction of Chakrasamvara embracing his yogini...more consort Vajravarahi is a highly energized visualization, such as would have been experienced by an advanced tantric master. Like all male deities shown in union, Chakrasamvara represents skillful means—the tools one uses on the path to enlightenment—while the female Vajravarahi represents the wisdom necessary to progress along that path. It chose the moment when I was half- way out of the roof hatch with the engine turned off to suddenly throw out his ears and blast his way towards the car. Sketch book, pencil and camera went flying as instinctively I performed half a dozen escape actions in the space of a split second. Pulling up short, he shook his head in disgust, dislodged a large cloud of dust and stalked away with his dignity intact.” The dramatic color combinations of the Masai Mara and the wild spirit of Africa come alive in this Anniversary Edition Fine Art Canvas. The condition of this Giclee on canvas is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this Giclee on canvas is 18 x 36 .

C. 1927 National Cash Register Model 415

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 25 of 709)

Featured in this lot is this refurbished 1927 National Cash Register Model 415, from The National Cash Register Company in Dayton, Ohio. The serial number of this cash re...moregister is S-249939 and be found on the metal tag below the glass case or underneath the cash drawer on the paper slip. Manufacturing and patent tags are attached to the underside of the cash drawer. Jack Ritty’s Incorruptible Cashier forever changed the way retail establishments would conduct everyday business. The first machines were sold not only for their functional ability, but also on their beauty – a fixture which every store owner would be proud to display in his establishment. The first cash registers were housed in elegant cabinets of polished wood. In 1888, ornate cases of brass and cast iron were produced. These fancy cases on cash registers ceased in 1915 due to demand for brass during World War I. Less expensive sheet metal versions were then produced and the era of the brass cash register ended after only 27 years. Even though brass cash registers have not been manufactured since 1915, they were refurbished and sold as used registers for the next three decades. In some cases, they can even be found in use today. The quality of the mechanisms in these machines, as well as the timeless beauty of their ornate cases, make it easy to understand why these one-time common business machines have become such a sought-after and coveted antique. This cash register has an ornate exterior and is designed in the Empire pattern. The top features an enclosed glass case where the price is shown to the cashier. The cash drawer and cash register base appear to be mahogany. National Cash Registers were made in red brass, nickel plate, and oxidized copper. National put solid nickel drawer fronts on the register, so the nickel plate wouldn't wear off. Supporting parts held metal features with nickel plating on the surface. This register has been done in red brass. The S in the serial number shows that the register was sent back to The National Register Company to be repaired or refurbished, and then resold. The register was resold to Miller Electric Company in New London, Wisconsin in 1927. In addition to the wooden cash drawer and pop-up indicators at the top, the machine has three rows of keys. Keys on the left are numbered No Sale, $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $7. Keys in the middle are numbered 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. The keys on the right are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The number counter in the glass case at the top goes up to $7.99. In the middle of the rows of keys, there is a small compartment that opens to reveal the 4 digit customer count. The machine has no mechanism to assist the clerk in adding up totals for individual sales and no paper tape to serve as a receipt. It has serial number and model number on stamped brass placards at the top of the front face. The cash register functions in good working condition, all keys function as intended, interior bell chimes consistently. Exterior brass case is in good overall condition, no marring noted. This is a heavy cash register measuring 16 1/4 L x 19 3/4 W x 19 1/4 H and weighs 102 pounds and 12 ounces.
