Custer Battlefield U.S. Springfield Model 1873

Lot # 238 (Sale Order: 34 of 45)

"This is an original Custer Battlefield U.S. Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor carbine (S/N) 36457 belonging to Second Lieutenant Benjamin Hubert Hodgson, Company B of the ...moreU.S. 7TH Cavalry. The rifle was noted as being captured by Fools Bear (Fools Bear was noted by John A. Kopec as being listed as turning in firearms including a Colt SAA #4878 in the National Archives records). The Custer Battlefield high serial number range has been documented as 33,000 – 43,700. Gun No. 13 Springfield U.S. Model 1873 Serial Number 36451 is documented as matching eight .45-55 cartridge cases from the Reno-Benteen defense area found along the soldier’s retreat line from Weir Point, on Sharpshooters Ridge. One author noted, “..a carbine that falls within nine or 10 serial numbers of a documented battle carbine has a good chance of being a battle relic. Carbine serial number 36461 in our study group falls close to two known 7th Cavalry carbines (#36419 and #36451) and two highly likely carbines (#36442 and #36481)… it is becoming increasingly obvious that few 36400 serial number range carbines will be found, and that there is an ominous and unusual gap in the listings. This would seem to bear out the belief that a sizeable group of these carbines fell into Indian hands.” With this carbine being serial number 36457 only six serial numbers away from a document carbine with forensic confirmation this is clearly an authentic Custer Battlefield carbine.

19th C. Springfield Percussion Sioux Adorned Rifle

Lot # 249 (Sale Order: 35 of 45)

This lot features a 19th Century faintly marked Springfield percussion black powder musket rifle which was adorned by the Lakota Sioux. The rifle is from the ex-Jim Basti...morean collection of Kansas City, and it was acquired from a dealer at the Tulsa, Oklahoma gun show several years back. There are two wraps of thick dark rawhide parfleche hide leather which were later elaborately decorated with brass and metal tacks in circles, bands and cross symbols. The large exposed side percussion hammer still pulls back and the hammer releases it. You can very faintly see the 1800’s mark at the back of the side receiver and very faintly see the markings on the center of the plate just in front of the hammer, consistent with early Spingfield rifles. There are some minor cracks in the stock near the trigger, likely from the firing impact over long periods of time. Nice, honest condition Indian Wars era trade rifle in Springfield form with some original and later added tacking. Most of the tacks appear to be later added brass covered metal round shank trade tacks. Said to be circa 1860-1880. The hammer pulls back, clicking twice and holding, trigger releases the hammer, appearing to function. Measures overall 47 ½ inches in length.*
