For your consideration is this beautiful, original J.A. Kirkpatrick (1898-1984) oil on canvas painting circa mid 1900s. Kirkpatrick was a North Dakota artist best known f...moreor his Western cowboy works of art. This painting shows three cowboys plowing, moving cattle and directing a woman and child away from a fire and large storm happening in the distance. The woman and child are standing, watching the fire in distance while cows are herded by to the left of them. The bottom left of the painting is signed by the artist reading, "J.A. Kirkpatrick" in white paint. The painting is set in a rustic wood frame. The painting and frame show good condition overall with some wear present on the frame but no signs of obvious damage is present. The visible art measures 22 7/8" L x 35" W, while the entire piece measures 29" L x 41 1/16" W x 1 5/8" D.

Early Chippewa Gunstock Spontoon War Club

The lot features an Early Gunstock Spontoon War Club attributed to the Chippewa in Northern Wisconsin of the 19th Century. The piece exhibits a classic typical Great Lake...mores region pattern of Gunstock War Club and has a deep chocolate patina from honest use and age. The club has a hand-forged iron notch cut trade spontoon blade with median ridge running down the center. The handle haft is adorned with chip carving, incised etched designs of animal figures, floral figures and has elaborate brass trade tack decorations on both sides. There is minor wear to the piece but overall the club displays very well. Provenance: From the ex-Ted Levy collection of Santa Rosa, California. The club measures 24 ½ inches in length with a spontoon blade that protrudes 6 inches.

This is an excellent set of large beaded hide gauntlet gloves from the Plateau Indians from the personal ex-collection of L.A. Huffman. The large men’s gloves consist of ...moreIndian tanned thick hide with large gauntlet cuff integrally sewn on having a thick canvas lining covered on the front with period correct beadwork and framed on the outside edge in Indian tanned hide fringe. The beadwork is trade thread sewn and shows a background of chalk white and greasy white with whimsical floral and bird effigy beadwork. The designs are in orange, green, turquoise, greasy amber, black and more. There is little to no bead loss. Likely from the Flathead or Nez Perce tribes the piece was collected in Montana by Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931). L.A. Huffman was a noted photographer in Montana. His collection was acquired by noted Montana collector John Fox. This piece is from the John Fox, Missoula, Montana collection. Well kept with little to no bead loss. Each glove measures 14.5” by 13”.

Ca. 1910-1930's Crow Beaded Holster & Sheath Belt

The lot features a circa 1910-1930’s beaded harness saddle leather revolver holster and knife sheath belt attributed to the Crow of the Northern Plains. The piece exhibit...mores a Taxco, Mexico Sterling and 14 karat yellow gold ranger buckle set (buckle, loop and end tip) marked .925 and 14K MEXICO as well as a partial hallmark, dating to circa 1910-1930’s. The belt shows a tooled harness saddle leather ends with thick trade saddle harness leather belt holding a large knife sheath and revolver holster. The entire belt, knife sheath and revolver holster are covered in glass trade beads in a beautiful Northern Plains geometric pattern, said to originate from the Crow. The beads includes red white hearts with opalescent centers, dating to circa 1910. The sheath has a large clip point old late 19th century to early 20th century Indian trade knife with half false back edge and two-piece walnut coffined grips held into place with brass rivets, faintly marked “FOX” or “FO..”. Little bead loss, stiff leather and a beautiful gold and silver Mexican Vaquero buckle. Measures overall 51 inches long and the strap is about 2.5 inches wide. The knife sheath is (without the knife) 14.75 inches long by 4.75 inches wide. Provenance: From a large Western collection of Native American weapons, rugs and beadwork. The knife is 17 3/8 inches long by 2 inches wide. The revolve holster is 10.25 inches long by 6 inches wide.

T...morehe piece has a typical triangle pattern made of Indian tanned hide with a calico trade clothe backing sewn with trade thread. The front is covered in glass trade seed beads in a classic geometric pattern with colors of light blue, cobalt, rose, greasy yellow and semi-transparent green. The bottom edge has dark blue and red stroud wool trade clothe with a row of pony beads and below thin Indian hide fringes with a red ocher dye. The top has an Indian tanned hide tie and copper trade bead. The drop measures 24 inches long, not including the 8 inch long hide ties. The width is 5"W.

Northern Plains Papal Cross Cutout Pipe Tomahawk

The lot features a pipe tomahawk with a Papal cross cutout attributed to the Northern Plains of the Reservation Period. The head appears to be a common blacksmith casting...more with a typical flaring western blade having an rear curled basal process spur prominent chevron and tall thin pipe bowl. At the center is a traditional Papal Cross which is crudely cutout and on one side having a slight stamped border. The eylet hole is a tear drop holding a carved wood haft handle with tappered body. The head is slightly lose and exposes a dark stained area where a gasket would have been. There are four bands of three brass trade tacks on either side. The handle has a cutout for a drop and comes to a point at the smoking tip. The 20th Century piece displays well. There are several nearly identical examples, many of which are represented as Reservation Period such as this piece. Head is about 8.5"L by 3.5" wide across the bottom of the blade. The tomahawk measures21" in length.

Northern Plains Pipe Tomahawk w/ Quilled Drop

The lot features an iron pipe tomahawk with quilled horsetail scalp drop from the Northern Plains of the 20th Century. The tomahawk exhibits a long large older pattern ir...moreon head with small carved bottom blade having a thick long body with ovalled square eyelet hole. The head has an spur pointing out with smooth finish and medium vase like bowl and is held into place with iron finished eye cap with two iron studs onto a hard wood haft handle. The handle has a sawtooth cut design under the front and is covered in hbands of brass covered metal furniture tacks. The base has a palm stop carved into the wood and the smoking tip is capped in brass, an artful touch. The bottom has a drop tied with Indian tanned buckskin showing a horsetail or horse main scalp drop with parfleched hide and is covered in porcupine quill quillwork in natural cream / white, brown and dyed red. The base has fringes of horse tail hair and fringes of Indian hide wrapped in porcupine quillwork with rolled tin jingle dangle cones on the end. The tomahawk appears to have an older Reservation era age to it possibly from the early-to-mid 1900's. The head itself measures 8"L by 2 3/8"L across the bottom of the blade. The club without the drop measures 25"L and the drop is an additional about 32"L.

Ca. 1880 Plains Bi-Point Stone Head War Club

This is an original bi-point stone head war club from the Northern Plains dating to circa 1880's from the ex-Harrisburg, Pennsylvania collection. The 19th Century club ex...morehibits an expertly carved bi-point stone head with drilled hole with inserted wooden haft handle in the center secured to the handle wrap of rawhide parfleche along the top and tied with sinew. The wood handle is covered with Indian parfleche rawhide with sinew sewing having a drop or flap of parfleche on the bottom with hole which would have held a wrist throng or drop of feathers. The piece has excellent color and is well preserved. Provenance: Collected by former Harrisburg, Pa., Mayor Stephen Reed from the University of Pennsylvania archives to be displayed in the Museum of the West housed by the Pennsylvania government. Eventually the items were "deaccessioned" or sold at auction in 2013 with this being one of those pieces. Measures overall 25"L and the head is about 6.5"L by 2.5"H by 2.5"D.

Black Crane General Miles Scout Meteorite Knife

The lot features a meteorite damascus clip point knife attributed as being owned by Black Crane a scout of General Miles. Black Crane participated in the campaign against...more Chief Joseph the Nez Perce. The Bear Paw Mountain Battle was the final battle of the campaign. The piece was examined by Wendell Grangaard of The Guns of History and found to be marked in togia a Lakota language. Black Crane or Black Grain was born in 1846 in Montana, the Powder River Country. He belonged to the Band of Dog Soldiers, The Shield Warrior Society and the Bowstring Soldier Society of the Northern Cheyenne. He fought with Two Moons at the Battles of Rosebud and Little Bighorn. The knife is marked Black Crane on the handle alogn with his winter count as well as Dog Soldier (illustrations 1 and 2). It is also marked with teh Cheyenne Circle of Life of teh Shield Warrior Society, Black Crane and the Bowstring Soldier Society Mark. There are notches on the knife blade. Black Crane fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn capturing a carbine. Later he surrended with Two Moon to General Miles at Fort Keogh, later scouting for Miles until 1878 (hence he retained weapons). The piece shows an Antler tine handle carved with a Bear or Dog head, possibly dog for Dog Soldier with brass hilt and damascus blade, noted as being Meteorite with paperwork. The handle is carved which is noted in the illustrations. A former collector dyed the handle red so that the carvings and togia would stand out more. Purchased for nearly $50,000 in the last ten years. Measures overall 9 7/8"L.

Blackfeet Hand Painted Steer Skull c. 1960-1970s

For your consideration is this beautiful, painted steer skull done by the Blackfeet Tribe circa 1960-70s. The skull has been painted with a black base and shows colors of...more red, white, blue and yellow throughout, colors sacred to the Blackfeet tribe. The forehead shows a geometric design, thought to be depicting beadwork, in colors of white, blue and red. Three red triangles point to the right and three point to the left, outlined by blue lines and surrounded by blue and white stripes. The horns have been painted white and exhibit a red painted base and red tips. Throughout the top half of the steer skull are yellow circles against the black background. The eyes have been painted white and lined with a red line and yellow triangles depicting a sun shape. The nose and mouth have been painted in stripe designs showing alternating colors of white, blue and red. The steer skull shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and handling over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is present. The skull measures 17 1/4" L x 28 1/4" W x 9 5/8" H and weighs 10 pounds and 6 ounces.

Lakota Sioux John Young Buck Feather Headdress

This is an outstanding full feathered large headdress with feather trailer all accented in beadwork and quillwork from master artist John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux N...moreative American Indians. This piece was sold by NAAC on July 2022 for a total of $9,135 (w/ bp). The piece was handmade by full blood Lakota Sioux Indian John Young Buck (Born 1944-) in the circa late 1900’s to early 2000’s and displayed in a Red Lodge, Montana Ranch. The headdress is signed on the inside of the bonnet, this headdress and the other in this sale are considered to be the last headdress war bonnets ever crafted by John Young Buck. The piece features a thick Buffalo Bison leather bonnet cap which is covered on the front with a wide brow band of glass trade seed beadwork in a geometric pattern in colors of medium green, chalk white and semi-transparent red. The brow band is further accented by two large round medallions on either side comprised of thick Buffalo Indian hide with a fantastic four-point morning star beadwork pattern done in glass trade seed bead colors of red, chalk white, medium green, light blue, cobalt, and yellow. At the center of each medallion hangs a single fringe with six wound glass red white heart Hudson Bay beads and below white Ermine hides. Framing the entire top and integrally running down the entire outsides as a trailer or trail are large white and brown Turkey feathers with plume feathers attached at each end along with horse tail hair strands. The feather ends are wrapped tightly wrapped with a red quill like strand and are tied onto brown hide. Framing the bonnet top along the outside edge in front of the feathers are hand cut long hide fringes in dark brown. The back side of the headdress is lined with beautiful brown and orange plume striped feathers along with a single large Turkey feather tied with five early old multi-layer chevron trade beads with a rawhide four part circle wrapped in original porcupine quill quillwork with colors of yellow, black, red and white; the feather is completely painted down the stem in a yellow blue and black pattern with dots of red and the end wrapped in the red strand. Between the feathers and the fringe is a trailer of dark brown leather hide trailer. The piece is overall well preserved with no visible bead loss, well preserved good condition feathers along the trail, nice soft hide leathers. The top of the bonnet on the back where the brown or orange plume feathers are shows some slight sheading and loss. John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is considered to be one of the finest Native American artist of the late 20th to early 21st Century with this being one of if not the finest contemporary headdresses offered for public sale. The piece is paired with a custom black metal telescoping headdress stand which is included in the lot. This piece was sold by NAAC on July 2022 for a total of $9,135 (w/ bp). The headdress measures approximately 52” long or tall by approximately 44” wide without including the horsehair tail fringe ends. The bonnet fits a large men’s head. Mannequin stand not included.

The piece shows a forged metal war axe tomahawk head with bear paw cutout on a beaded hide leather clothe covered handle from Lakota Sioux Indian John Young Buck. John Yo...moreung Buck was born in 1947 and was known to have works from the circa 1960-2000’s with this likely being from the 20th Century. The head has a steel round eyelet hold with a typical western blade axe head with blacksmith forge hammer marks and a cutout of a bear paw with claws at the center. The wood handle has a hide leather wrapped gasket holding the head on and is covered in hide leather and red stroud trade clothe showing glass trade beadwork of red, white and black with hand cut fringes, wrapped gripping handle and drop of red stroud trade clothe with brass covered metal trade tacks in a bear paw claw pattern and fringes at the bottom as well as rolled metal jingle cones. The piece displays very well and is from a Ranch in Red Lodge, Montana. Measures overall 37”L including the drop with the head being 8 1/8” L by 4 7/8” across the blade edge.

The bottom has thin Elk hide fringes and the hide overall on the bag is in good supple condition. The bag has some small bead loss, but overall displays well. There is a collection tag marked, ELK HIDE PIPE BAG $2,100.00 / MINT 14B7". A nice older 20th Century bag that measures 26"L by 7.75"W.

The entire front is covered in 1800's glass trade seed beadwork showing geometric pattern having colors of greasy sky padre blue, greasy yellow, cobalt, greasy green, red white heart, and chalk white. The top flap has a tab pattern and also has beadwork. There is an original belt strap and ties as well as thick hand cut Indian hide fringes along the bottom. Uncommon tobacco pouch. Some slight bead loss but well kept piece. Measures approx. 19"H by 8"W.

The bolo tie is a classic western accessory, recognizable for its two decorati...moreve ends connected by a thin cord. It was created in the 1930s by Native American tribal silversmiths in Arizona and New Mexico. Both have braided black leather cords.The first bolo features a large bezel setting trapezoidal Cripple Creek cabochon surrounded by twisted rope, the bolo tips having "morning star" symbols on each tip. Signed on reverse by artist "TDuran." A very impressive tie. The second unknown artist bolo features a bezel mounted Sleeping Beauty petit point center surrounded by a design of rays proceeding away from the stone. The rim of the face features sun ray symbols. A very beautiful piece. The first bolo measures 21"L, the second is 18.5"L.
