Stereoview Photos From Various Publishers 1901-11

Lot # 341 (Sale Order: 301 of 708)      

For your consideration are three stereoview photo cards from various publishers (Gurnsey, American Stereoscopic Company & Norman A. Forsyth) circa 1901 to 1911. The first...more in this lot was published by Norman A. Forsyth circa 1901 to 1911 and shows Native Americans of the Flathead Tribe sitting near a lake with their teepee set up. Three older tribe members are sitting near the teepees opening, while the two younger tribe members are walking along the shore near by. The bottom reads, "The Real American and the Simple Life". The back is marked reading, "Published by N.A. Forsyth. 120 N. Mont. St. Butte, Mont.". The second in this lot was taken by R. Y. Young and published by the American Stereoscopic Company circa 1903. It is from the Natural History Series and is titled, "Last Remnants of the American Bison, Yellowstone National Park U.S.A". It shows a smaller heard of bison standing in a grassy area below some towering hills. The stereoview photo reads, "American Stereoscopic Company Manufacturers and Publishers / New York U.S.A. 725-727 Broadway". The third and final stereoview photo was taken by Gurnsey's Rocky Mountain Views, published at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Pike's Peak Avenue. This is from the "Scenes on the Line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway" series and is titled, "Burro Pack Train, In a mountain pass, loaded with merchandise for San Juan" and numbered, "109". It shows R.C. Luesley's Burro Pack Train as it heads through the mountains with merchandise and goods to sell at San Juan. Mules are loaded with packs and a few men look back towards the camera and pose. The back of the stereoview photo shows the publishers, the series name, the catalog number and the title. Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. The stereoview photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is noted. The actual photos show good condition while the cards they are set on exhibit the wear. The largest measures 3 15/16" L x 7" W, while the other two measure 3 1/2" L x 7" W.

C.1930 Hudson Bay Four Point Red Trade Blanket

For your consideration is this Hudson Bay Company four-point trade wool blanket, circa 1930. This blanket, which shows the company tag that was first used in the1926, was...more made in England. This is a red wool blanket with two large stripes of black dye on both sides of the blanket and four small stripes (points). Although the Hudson Bay Company didn't originate the point system for trade blankets, they popularized this system of quality identification. This blanket shows four points as black stripes on left hand side of the blanket. In the days of fur trapping and trading, a 4-point blanket would be exchanged for 4 beaver hides. The condition of this blanket is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this Hudson Bay Trade blanket are 70" x 90".

The condition of this collection of cabinet cards is preserved with some wear to the photos and the cardstock the photos are mounted on shows some tears to the materials but otherwise shows preserved condition. The measurements of this cabinet cards range from 2 3/4" x 1 7/8" to 6 1/2" x 81/2".

The condition of this green-cloth bound, hardback, with gold gilt book is fair overall, scuffing exhibited to the cover's edges. Front cover photograph of Buffalo Bill has fading. The intact pages exhibit age related tanning and foxing. No other obvious marring observed. The book measures 5.5"W 7.75"L x 1"D, weight 1lb.

The antique setting is decorated with a total of 166 round brilliant cut diamonds that shows measurements of 1-1.5mm and shows a clarity of VS2 - SI2 and shows a coloration of F - G with a total diamond weight of 1.53cts. The ring size is US 8. Athabascan Fire Bag Beaded Hide & Clothe

This is an original Northern Athabascan Fire Bag on Indian hide and trade clothe with beadwork and dentalium shells. The fire bag or firebag is referred to as a K’enq’ena...more viqizdluyi in Dena’ina Athabascan (as noted by Helen Dick and Michelle Ravenmoon). This bag shows an Indian tanned hide base with covering in red stroud trade wool and exquisite glass trade seed beadwork in classic geometric Athabascan patterns with large dentalium shells. The bag is thread sewn and is backed on the collar in calico trade clothe. The beadwork shows red white heart, greasy white, cobalt and chalk white pony beads. The bag is well kept in near pristine condition. Collected from the Northwest Coast in 1985, exact age unknown. Truly a unique piece. Measures overall 30”L by 7.5“W.

Rare Tahltan Beaded Dagger Knife Sheath

The lot features a scarcely seen pattern of dagger knife sheath, a Tahltan beaded trade clothe sheath. The piece would have been worn around the neck and held a dagger or...more dag knife. This pattern of sheath is uncommon and several 19th Century examples are in museum collections such as the Tahltan 1850-1860 Knife Sheath in the MET Museum collection and the Tahltan Knife Sheath collected from the Tlingit from George Thornton Emmons in the National Museum of the American Indian collection. This piece exhibits seed beads and pony beads in classic Northwest Coast geometric patterns on red and dark blue wool clothe with muslin lining and calico trade clothe backing on the strap. Collected from the Northwest Coast in 1985, exact age unknown. Truly a unique piece. Measures overall 26”L by 4.5“W.

The bowcase and quiver are sewn with hide lacing. The quiver shows two bands on the front and rear wrapping around both sides using scarce pony glass trade beads in chalk whtie and padre light blue. The quiver shows a painted banded stripped design in brown and a red ocher / ochre rubbing. The piece has thick Indian tanned hide with thick overall hide being well kept. This has a collection tag marked, "Quiver Crow $3,450 / 08A24". Exact age unknown. Measures overall 45"L without fringes by 35"H with fringes.

Batty Brothers Measuring Nozzle Powder Flask

For your consideration is this Batty Brothers powder flask with a powder output measuring nozzle circa 1847-1858. In the 1800s, The Batty Brothers was a firm that provide...mored the US government with powder flasks. Immigrants from Sheffield, England, Joseph H. and John T. Batty created the renowned business. The United States government hired a number of private businesses, including The Batty Brothers, to produce powder flasks for the armed forces. New England, the nation's most industrialized region at the time, was where the Batty Brothers were located. The flask shows an image of a man standing over a deer he has just hunted. He is holding a rifle and has a powder flask slung around his waist as he looks down at the deer. In the background is a large tree and the hunters dog, low to the ground. The adjustable output measuring nozzle is marked on the side reading, "Batty". The nozzle can be adjusted to three different outputs or drams, usually from 3 1/4 to 2 1/2. The output nozzle and spring loaded cover are in good working condition. The powder flask shows a nice patina from its age and use over the years, showing signs of wear but no signs of major damage is noted. The powder flask measures 7 7/8" L x 3 5/16" W x 1 1/4" D and weighs 6 ounces.

Northern Plains Indians Quilled Mocassins c. 1960s

Featured in this lot is this Northern Plains Indians quilled mocassins circa 1960's. The mocassins feature a wonderfully and professionally crafted sinew sewn hide and qu...moreilled toe construction that mocassins appears to be sewn together by sinew with laces of hide with brass cleats towards to the top of the mocassins. The edges of the hide are lined with cloth that secures the eyelets and the cleats in place. The soles are soft and not hardened and is constructed from two levels of the mocassins including a ankle portion. The quilled toe area is fairly faded but shows the original pattern the quilled area decorated. The condition of this pair of mocassins is preserved with some wear marks to the outside of the hide and the quill work is degraded from use and time but otherwise is in preserved condition. The measurements of these mocassins is 6" x 10 1/2" x 3 1/4". The collective weight of this pair of moccasins is 14oz.

The condition of this copper bucket is good with some patina due to age and some dents to the frame of the bucket and the mark is shown fairly worn out with only partially observed but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this bucket is 8 1/8" x 11 3/4" x 13 3/8". The collective weight of this bucket is 2lb 14oz.

Kazak style rugs are similar in design to Heriz rugs, with a colorful and bright coloration. The rugs were traditionally woven by various tribes located near the Caucasus Mountains. This rug displays a geometric border with a medallion across the center. The piece shows a red base with colors of tan, orange, blue, and navy blue. The piece shows a white fringe at each end. The piece is in good condition and shows little wear and use. The rug measures 61" wide by 97" long.

The Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators who perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. Ceremonies are performed to either attract or exorcise effects to The People. Yei is the Navajo name for a deity or a holy one. The Yeis are woven facing outward. They are usually depicted with long bodies and skirts and hold sacred plants or symbols. The condition of this Navajo rug is well preserved with some damage tot he weave in some places but otherwise is well preserved. The measurements of this Navajo rug is 57" x 28". The thread count is 70 threads per square inch.

The bucket is marked on the bottom as follows: H.W. Hayden - Patent Dec. 15 1851 - Manufactured - O. The condition of this brass bucket is good with some patina in the inside of the bucket and some wear to the outside of the bucket and the marking is partially rubbed off but otherwise shows good overall condition. The carving shows a scene of an Inuit fisherman with supplies in his canoe in the river with rocks all around them. The carving is marked on the bottom as follows: D Schmidt. The condition of this wooden carving is good with the only damage being the paddle section in the mans hands and shows some aging to the top of the carving. The measurements of this carving is 3 1/2" x 15 3/4" x 5 3/4". The collective weight of this carving is 2lb.
