Charles Ringer (1948) Steel Kinetic Sculpture 1987

For your consideration is this kinetic steel sculpture by American artist Charles Ringer, born in Minnesota in 1948. Ringer attended the University of Colorado from 1966-...more1968 and then left to pursue a career in art. This playful, kinetic, steel sculpture depicts a Native American hunting a heard of buffalo with a large spear as he rides bareback on his horse. The pieces are free moving and spin when pushed. The metal base reads, "Charles Ringer". The sculpture is set on a large, unmarked piece of polished and stained wood slab. The sculpture shows good condition overall with only slight wear to the spinning pieces from rubbing against each other. No signs of obvious damage is noted. The piece measures 28" L x 10 3/4" W x 14" H and weighs 27 pounds and 8 ounces.

His publications The Birds of America & The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America are icons of 19th-century art and capture the nascent stages of American natural history. This lithograph is titled, "Boat-tailed Grackle" and shows two sitting in an area of branches and leaves. One looks around its surroundings as the other opens his mouth to make a call. The top of the lithograph reads, "No. 38 / Plate CLXXXVII" while the bottom reads, "© By A. Inc. 1937 Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S.F.L.S. / Boat-tailed Grackle Quiscalus Major. Featured in this lot is a Vintage Boston Globe Art Supplement Collection, circa 1905-1906. For more than a century, the newspaper trade has had to determine creative ways...more to prevent a decrease in circulation and to find new subscribers. In the late 1800s, the Sunday edition of newspapers began to carry art supplements, which included parlor prints and toys for kids to cut out and assemble. Art supplements proved an innovative way to build an audience, each week parents read about the next must-have art prints and paper toys in the following week’s newspaper. The eleven (11) chromolithograph art prints featured instructions on how to make a "frame" for the print by folding the borders of the prints. Included are prints of scenes from the American Revolution, Mexican-American War, and The American Civil War. Also included in this lot is the Vintage sheet music "Battle of Gettysburg: March Descriptive, with Color Lithograph of Pickett's Charge" by E. T. Paull, 1917, nine (9) pages. The cover features a painting in colour of a battle in the American Civil War fought by Union and Confederate forces in 1863, in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Includes description and music notes. Published by E.T. Paull Music Co., (1858-1924), a minor American composer, arranger, and sheet music publisher. Lithographed by A. Hoen & Co., Richmond, VA, founded in Baltimore in the mid-1850s by August Hoen. He then relocated his lithographic company to Richmond, Virginia around the 1860's. Prints and sheet music are in nicely preserved condition, slight edge marring noted. Prints measure 10.5"W x 12"L each, sheet music is 10.5"W x 13.75"L

The lot features an original 19th Century Gourd Rattle with carved wood handle attributed to the Pueblo Indians from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The rattle...more exhibits a gourd top punch dot pierced or engraved pattern showing a wood piece running through the gourd with Indian tanned gasket between the wood and gourd. The wood handle is expertly carved showing two knobs and tapering design, likely from pine or juniper. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Good overall condition. Has trade thread ties on the top. Measures overall 7.75"L by 4".

Featured in this lot is this Navajo Bisti Trading Post sampler rug circa 1940's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a ...morebrown border with a off white and light brown inner ring with stepped decoration. The field is of light grey coloration with medallions set in the center numbering five with off white, light brown, dark brown, and heathered brown coloration. Bisti means badlands in Navajo. The region is located just off NM Route 371 about an hour south of Farmington and 90 miles North of I-40. The Old Bisti Trading Post has been closed for some time. The Bisti Navajo Rugs are the rarest of the Regional Navajo Rugs. Characteristic of the Bisti weavings are numerous borders surrounding a center field, sometimes up to nine borders. A thin checkered border is common in these rugs. Circles, Prayer Feathers and intricate complex geometric designs make up the field. The condition of this Navajo sampler rug is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug is 26" x 15 1/2". The thread count is 165 threads per square inch.

The mask features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wooden construction t...morehat shows a painted exterior with had carved decoration to the mask. The "Mahakala" Buddhist monastary mask from Tibet; thought, and awareness are "transcended" and one's true self is revealed. Ceremonial Buddhist masks metaphorically echo the same sentiment as they shield the true self from view. This mask comes complete with the Certificate of Authenticity from Butterfields & Butterfields (Bonhams) from 2014, and comes with a book with the exact mask presented in it on page 43. The mask also sold at a Bonhams Auction in 2016 for $5,250.00. The condition of this Tibetan or Mongolian mask is preserved with some wear to the wood and to the paint adorning the mask but otherwise shows preserved overall condition. The measurements of this mask is 13" x 13" x 7 1/2". The collective weight of this mask is 3lb 6oz.

The condition of this book is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this book is 9 1/4" x 10 1/4". The collective weight of this book is 2lb 2oz.

Bushnell 4x Banner 4x32 Rifle Scope c. 1960-80s

Featured in this lot is this 1960-80s 4x Banner 4x32 rifle scope made by Bushnell. After returning from his honeymoon in Japan with two crates of binoculars, David P. Bus...morehnell founded the Bushnell optics company in 1948 and began selling binoculars by mail order. Bushnell was an American businessman who introduced affordable precision binoculars to the middle class for the first time. He was also among the first businessmen from Southern California to recognize the potential of promoting products made in Asia at a lower cost in the US market. This rifle scope shows a knob on the top and one on the right for adjustments and zeroing the scope in. Near the top knob it reads, "4x Banner by Bushnell", while the bottom is marked, "4x32 BL Japan No. C145937". The cross hair is clean and clearly visible through the scope. The front of the scope has been slightly bent but does not effect the view port. Shows slight cosmetic wear from its age and use over the years but no signs of major damage is noted. The scope measures 11 11/16" L x 1 1/2" H and weighs 8 ounces.

Featured in this lot is this Kiraku and Co. Grampus Tokyo, Japan circa 1950's. The fly rod is a segmented rod constructed from bamboo and shows a reel with a three piece ...moresegmented set up and a two piece segmented set up. The condition of this fly rod is preserved with some of the female tubes of the rod shaft loose on the rod and shows some wear to the wrapping and wear to the rod itself but otherwise shows preserved condition. The measurements of this fly rod is 8ft with the longer rod and 5 1/2ft for the shorter rod. The collective weight of this fly rod with all the shafts is 12oz.
