"Boots and Saddles" 1st Ed. Elizabeth Custer

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 708)

For your consideration is this Scarce First Edition of "Boots and Saddles" by Elizabeth Custer, 1885. Harper & Brothers, New York publisher. "Boots and Saddles or Life in...more Dakota with General Custer" With Portrait and Map. This is a wonderful narrative of the life of General Custer on the plains in the mid to late 1800s. The book was written as a dedication to her husband, General George Armstrong Custer, and chronicles their life together until his untimely death at the hands of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians at the Battle of the Little Bighorn (known to the Lakota and other Plains Indians as the Battle of the Greasy Grass), and commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand in 1876. After President Ulysses S. Grant publicly blamed General Armstrong Custer for the disaster at Little Bighorn, Elizabeth Custer, the general’s wife, took on the role of his public defender. Beginning with "Boots and Saddles" in 1885, she would go on to publish a trilogy of autobiographical works about the life of her martyred husband, to include "Tenting on the Plains" (1887) and "Following the Guidon" (1890). As she writes in the Preface, “One of the motives that have actuated me in recalling these simple annals of our daily life, has been to give a glimpse to civilians of garrison and camp life–about which they seem to have such a very imperfect knowledge…” Largely as a result of her books and decades of campaigning on his behalf, General Custer's legacy transformed into that of the brave fallen hero and the Battle of the Little Bighorn became the most important symbol of the American-Indian wars. "Boots and Saddles" covers the period just before the battle of the Little Bighorn, and was the first to include the portrait in addition to the expected contents of Native American Indians, Sioux and Dakota tribes, the Black Hills Expedition, the U.S. Army and Cavalry. This tan coloured cloth bound gold gilt stamped hardcover is in fair condition, scuffing noted to cover edges, front cover gilt is still bright. A gold gilt sunrise behind a mountain range dominates the front cover whilst a piece of sheet music is superimposed over a gold gilt bugle on the top right corner. The stamped sunrays are continued onto both the spine and rear cover. Some looseness exhibited on spine. Age tanning and slight foxing observed throughout intact pages, soiling on top edge. Measures 7.5"L x 5.25"W x 1"D, weight 1lb.*

Washington's Farewell Address to the People 1812

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 708)

Featured in this lot is "Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States" published for the Washington Benevolent Society, printed and sold by Denio & Ph...moreelps circa 1812. At the conclusion of his second term as President, in September 1796, Washington delivered the well-known Farewell Address, which was primarily written by Alexander Hamilton. It highlighted the value of morality and unity, cautioned against the perils of political factions and sectionalism, and warned against the "insidious wiles of foreign influence." The speech sparked an instantaneous and enormously enthusiastic response, which was documented in local newspapers as well as in distinct booklets and broadsides sent across the country. Copies of Washington's address were distributed to members of the grassroots political organizations known as the Washington Benevolent Societies, which were founded by the Federalist Party between 1808 and 1816. The portrait frontispiece's engraver, Thomas Gimbrede, was a miniature painter and engraver who was born in France in 1781. In 1802, he left France to immigrate to the US. He started out making miniatures, but by 1810 he was working for New York City publishers like John Low. At the United States Military Academy at West Point, he was named instructor of drawing in 1819 and remained there until his death in 1832. Below the frontispiece engraving shows the certification page reading, "Lincoln Branch / No. 44 This certifies, That H. Willmot Mayhew has been regularly admitted a Member of the Washington Benevolent Society of the County of Franklin, instituted at ? on the fifth day of February 1812 / K.E. Newcomb, President. / Secretary". Around the engraving it reads, "Pro Patria / Washington Benevolent Society". The front cover shows a marbled design with colors of brown and beige, while the spine shows a green color and gold gilt lettering reading, "Washington". The book shows good condition overall despite its antique age. It shows wear from its age and use over the years but no signs of major damage is present. Foxing and staining is noted throughout the interior pages, but still in good, readable condition. The book measures 6 5/16" L x 3 7/8" W x 1/4" D.

We engaged the enemy again about noon near Petersburg. Charged a fort and took it but with great slaughterâX;we captured 11 thousand prisoners today." April 9th, 1865 "Started for the Rebs. Marched a coupe of milesâdarrived just in time to reinforce the cavalry. We advanced and drove the Rebs back but under the severest fire at Clover Hill. Old Lee surrendered the whole rebel army this afternoon." The condition of this diary is well preserved for its age with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition.
