From his start as an army scout during the westward expansion to the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, this book is an exciting read as Buffalo Bill's own words grace its pages. A wonderful story of his long, eventful, heroic career and is supplemented with a chapter by a loving, life-long fdriend covering his last days, death, and burial. The whole work comprising an authentic history of many events inseparably interwoven with the exploration, settlement, and development or our Great Western Plains. This red illustrated cloth bound illustrated hardcover is in fair to nice condition, front cover vignette of figure crouched behind a tree with his long rifle, scuffing noted to cover edges, spine loose. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 4.75"W x 6.75"L x .75"D, weight 12oz.

Kearsarge Mine Madison County Cross Section Maps

Featured in this lot are two large cross section maps of Kearsarge Mine in the Virginia City Mining District in Madison County, Montana circa 1930-50s. In the Virginia Ci...morety Mining District, close to Virginia City, Montana, sits the Kearsarge-Apex Mine. The Beaverhead National Forest currently includes this district. There are currently no known plans for the reopening of the Kearsarge-Apex Mine, which is closed. During its mining operations, the mine was categorized as a medium-sized producer, with only one known shaft used in the mine's underground operations. With a total length of 2,438 meters (8,000 feet), the mine's maximum subsurface depth was 122 meters (400 feet). The primary mineral that was taken out of the mine was gold; nagyagite made up the majority of the waste material. Both maps are cross section views of the underground mine, with the first and smaller map showing the incline shaft, main tunnel and main station. The top reads, "Cross Section Kearsarge / Looking West / Scale 1 in. = 20 ft." in blue lettering. The second, larger cross cut map is showing a main building, an elevator shaft, the lower tunnel, numbers 1-3 winze tunnels, various rise tunnels, the incline shaft and ore deposit spots. The top left of the map reads, "Longitudial Projection of the Kearsarge Mine Workings / Madison County Mont. / Scale, 1 in. = 20 ft.". The maps show good condition overall with wear present from their age and use over the years. Corners and edges are worn. Large map shows large creases and folds to the paper. No signs of major damage is noted. The larger map measures 31 7/8" L x 49 5/8" W, while the smaller one measures 37 3/4" L x 31" W.

Featured in this lot is a Unique Northern Plains Indian Hand Carved Elk Antler Tine Pack Horse Straight Bar Bit, circa mid to late 1900s. In comparison to jointed bits, a...more straight bar exerts less pressure on the tongue edges. The stronger the rein aid the more pressure is directed onto the tongue and lower jaw bone. Recommended for horses that evade the rein aids and tend to get strong. This bit has a leather strip wrapped straight bar and a leather chin strap. The bit is in nice preserved condition, the tines has a varied patina throughout. Measures 6.5"W x 7.5"L x 5"D, weight 10oz.

The head is secured with brass covered metal tacks and hide fringes and the handle is wrapped in red stroud wool trade clothe with brass covered trade tacks and fringes. There is a drop of old red stroud wool trade blanket drop. The bottom of the wood is stamped / signed. Overall the club, excluding the drop, measures 25"L with the head being 8"L and 4"L across the bottom of the blade. The drop is 11"L.

The first is the smaller of the two in the...more style of a lightening rod with two heads and shows chicken feet patterns throughout the wand and shows coloration of red, turquoise, yellow, white, and black. The second of the dancing wands is the larger and shows the style of a lightening rod with two heads with arrows throughout the rod and shows coloration of white, and black. There is a lightning wand which is cut from wood in a zigzag shape to imitate that phenomenon of nature. It is carried by certain impersonators in dances devoted to rainmaking. The condition of this pair of dancing wands is preserved with some chipping and fading to the paint of the wands but otherwise shows a preserved condition. The measurements of this pair of dancing wands is 18 3/8" x 1 1/2" and the larger measures 24" x 2 1/2". The collective weight of this pair of dancing wands is 8oz.

The bay mare horse is hitched to a tree...more limb tripod adjacent to a Blackfoot tipi which features the painted image of an otter as well as painted geometric symbols above and below. The Blackfeet Nation (Aamsskáápipikani, Pikuni), officially named the Blackfeet Tribe of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation of Montana, is a federally recognized tribe of Siksikaitsitapi people in northwest Montana. Notable photographers of the Blackfeet people were Edward Sheriff Curtis, Walter McClintock, Roland W. Reed, T. J. Hileman, Thomas Benjamin Magee. Tipi designs are the most notable, visible and can be a socially charged form of graphic art. Although many Plains Indians had painted designs on some of their tipis, the ones owned by Blackfoot people in Montana and Canada are most numerous. The end of the scope is stamped reading, "Vari-X 3x9" around the edge, while the side shows gold lettering reading, "Leupold Made in USA 58046". The scope shows good condition overall with some slight wear despite its age and use over the years. No signs of obvious damage is noted. The collection consists of one from 1919, two from 1923, two from 1930, one from 1931, one from 1932, one from 1936, two from 1940 (50 Years of Statehood), one from 1941, one from 1945, two from 1948 and one from 1954. The plates show numerous color designs of yellow, silver, orange and black with black, white and green lettering. One is marked with a potato in the center and reads, "World Famous Potatoes". The plates show good condition overall with wear present from their age and use over the years. Rusting and paint chipping present on many. No signs of major damage noted. The plates measure from 4 1/8" L x 8 1/8" W to 6 1/16" L x 13 1/8" W and have a collective weight of 5 pounds and 8 ounces.

In 1889, Montana b...moreecome the 41st state on November 8th. The decision of the capital's permanent location was up to the residents of Montana to decide. During this time, Helena continued its role as temporary capital. In 1892, an election was held to determine the permanent capital location. Out of the seven cities listed on the ballot, Helena and Anaconda remained as the top voted cities, but neither had won majority. A runoff vote was then called for. In 1894, Helena won the runoff election and became the state's permanent capital. This poster shows a large image of Helena's State Capital building and reads, "Helena / The Capital of Montana / Souvenir of the Capital election and Business Directory" in blue lettering with American flags on either side. The poster shows a large write up on the celebration after winning the runoff election, detailed the lavish parade and festivities. The poster also lists various business throughout the town of Helena, using the parade and celebration as a way to get their business to the people of Montana. The piece shows good condition overall with some tears present but no major signs of damage is noted. The poster has been placed on a foam board and plastic wrapped to preserve its condition. The piece measures 21 13/16" L x 29 11/16" W.
