Montana Pommel Saddle Bags with Hidden Holster

Lot # 548 (Sale Order: 502 of 708)

Featured in this lot is a pair of Vintage Montana Handtooled Leather Pommel Saddle Bags with Holster, circa early to mid 1900s. Underneath the flaps, on both sides, is a ...morepocket and a pistol holster. Saddlebags were a common accessory used on horses in the 1800s, particularly in rural and frontier areas. They were typically made of leather or canvas, and designed to be hung over the horse's saddle to provide extra storage space for supplies and equipment. The first form of gunleather used widely throughout the west was the pommel holster that was used originally by the military in Europe and then in the US colonies. These were made commercially by companies that were supplying the military and were the easiest way to carry the cumbersome pistols and needed accessories of the time. In the early 1800's frontiersmen used large-bore, single shot handguns commonly known as "horse" pistols. They used these mainly for game hunting and protection. The pommel bag holster is believed to have been developed in the California Gold Rush era where it was used by Wells Fargo in the gold fields. Attractive stamped design, supple leather, no maker's mark observed. Leather thong strap tie down on right side, left tie down missing. Buckles exhibit age patina. Remnant shadows of missing conchos imprinted on upper crossover leather. Alligatoring on leather noted, stitching appears intact throughout. Dark brown and reddish brown colouring. Measures 10.5"W x 17.5"L, weight 2lb, 14oz.

Nemadji Pottery / Minnesota Swirl Collection (7)

Lot # 556 (Sale Order: 510 of 708)

Featured in this lot are seven pieces of gorgeous Nemadji Pottery, also known as Minnesota Swirl pottery circa 1930-50s. Nemadji pottery originates in Minnesota's Arrowhe...moread region. Many people now consider it to be "Indian pottery," even though it has nothing to do with the Ojibway tribe. Clay that was excavated from the Nemadji River's banks was initially used to make it. In Moose Lake, Nemadji Pottery was founded in 1923. It produced decorative items meant mainly for the tourist trade, as well as floor tiles for widespread distribution, mostly in the west and northeast. The painted decoration had a unique look, and the design is still in use today. A note in one of the pots reads, "Twenty-five thousand years ago the ice sheet of the glacial age covered the land. It is now known that the primitive ancestors of our present Indians lived here when the great ice sheet started to melt and retreat. Clays of various shades and composition were made by the glacial ice sheets; the great weight of the ice ground rocks and ores into dust, which became clays, afterwards washed and refined by the lakes and streams from the melting glaciers. From these clays Nemadji Pottery is made. The Indians used this clay left by the ice sheet to make cooking pots and vases, and in the ancient warrior's grave are found fragments of his favorite cooking pot. Nemadji Art Pottery is made largely from designs of this ancient Indian pottery and many of their traditional shapes are preserved in our designs. The coloring of Nemadji Art Pottery is accomplished in a manner that allows no two pieces to be exactly alike. The pottery is burned in a kiln and glazed on the inside. The warm rich colors of this pottery recall the colorful costumes of the redman, who, though long since gone to the happy hunting ground, still haunts in spirit the plains, streams, woods, and lakes of this our Empire". This collection features six smaller vases and one smaller bowl. The vases show various styles and shapes with beautiful coloring throughout in a swirled pattern. The colors include green, yellow, beige, red, orange, brown, magenta, blue, pink and light yellow. The bowl features the same pattern and shows colors of red, blue, yellow, green and beige. The bottom of some pieces read, "Nemadji Pottery U.S.A.". The pieces show good condition overall with some slight wear from their age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage is present. The vases measure from 2 7/8" height and 8 1/2" in circumference to 5 1/8" height x 6 3/8" in circumference. The bowl measures 1 5/8" height and 6" in diameter. The pieces have a collective weight of 2 pounds and 2 ounces.

1888 Illustrated Digging Gold Among the Rockies

Lot # 559 (Sale Order: 513 of 708)

For your consideration is this 1888 of “Digging Gold Among the Rockies” by G. Thomas Ingham, Esq., Hubbard Brothers, Philadelphia publishers, Edgewood Edition Illustrated...more. "Digging Gold Among the Rockies or Exciting Adventures of Wild Camp Life in Leadville, Black Hills and the Gunnison Country” provides a graphic history of the various discoveries of gold and silver in the United States, the development and extent of our mining industries. As a Deputy Mineral Surveyor for the United States during the late 1800s who was involved daily with the technical aspects of mining, Ingham infuses this book with a wealth of facts and a truly colorful history that defined the mining industry of the time. "Digging Gold Among the Rockies" provides a brief history of the discovery of gold and silver in the eastern United States and California, but quickly claims the Colorado Rockies and the Black Hills of the Dakotas as its primary focus. In this fascinating book, Ingham explains the differences between placer and lode mining and the equipment used for each. He writes about the first discoveries, early mining laws, mine locations, mining terms, towns that sprang-up in the mining areas, and the contagious boomtown atmosphere that was everywhere. He explains the salting of mines, warns of robbers and thieves and the dangers of gambling and drinking, and also includes short biographies of some of the mining giants of his era. Yet, even with mining being central to this work, Ingham still takes the time to describe the pleasures he experienced while hunting in the mountains and fishing in the area's clear, rushing streams. This reddish-brown cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nicely preserved condition, scuffing exhibited to edges, gold gilt faded on spine. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing throughout. Measures 5"W x 7.5"L x 1.5"D.

Framed Ukrainian Pysanky & Fish Scale Art (2)

Lot # 567 (Sale Order: 521 of 708)

Featured in this lot is this framed Ukrainian Pysanky egg and leaf and framed fish scale flower art done by First Nations Kathy Maccagno in Lac La Biche circa mid to late...more 1900s. The first framed piece houses half of a hand painted Ukrainian Pysanky and a dried, red maple leaf to the left of the egg. The art of decorating eggs, or Pysanky, dates back to ancient times. The word "pysanka" comes from the Ukrainian verb "pysaty", which means "to write". The Trypillian culture, which predated modern-day Ukraine, is where the custom first emerged. The locals held the sun in high regard and considered it to be the origin of all life. Because of their belief that birds are the sun God's chosen creations, springtime rituals began to include eggs decorated with symbols of nature. Throughout the Soviet occupation of Ukraine after World War II and until 1991, the custom of decorating Pysanky was not widely followed. The custom has been revived since Ukraine gained its independence back. The pre-Christian Ukrainians thought that the eggs could prevent starvation, control weather, safeguard health, prevent infertility, and shield homes from fire. The egg shows colors of yellow, orange, red, white and black with geometric designs and a sheaf (bundle of wheat) in the center. The leaf shows the iconic Maple leaf shape and has a nice, red color. Both pieces sit in a gold colored wood frame and are set behind glass, sitting on a white background. The back of the frame features a small write-up on this history of the Pysanky. The frame measures 6 3/16" L x 6 3/16" W x 1 3/8" D. The second framed piece is a flower created from dried fish scales done by Kathy Maccagno. The piece shows intricate detail and design with scales having been folded to add depth and detail. It shows two flowers with a third coming off of the top of the right most petals. The flowers show colors of green and very light pink. The piece is set in a shadow box style dark wood frame and is matted twice with red and white matting paper. The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no damage noted. The piece measures 9 5/16" L x 7 1/4" W x 1 7/8" D. The collective weight of both pieces is 1 pound and 6 ounces.
