Incredibly similar in pattern to the Pikuni (Blackfeet) Parfleche Cylinder 19th Century in the MIA (Minnesota Institute of Art) collection. This piece is well kept, from the 20th Century and would have held a rolled up feathered headdress war bonnet / dance bonnet. The case itself measures 24.5"L by 8"W by 5.25"D with additional shoulder strap that sits about 12" off the body when drawn and 15-17"L ties fringes on top. All the ties and fringes are Indian tanned hide.

The belt buckle is marked on the underside of the buckle 'Nickel Silver' and shows the Bell Trading Post hallmark of a bell. In 1932 during the worst of the Great Depression, Jack Michelson and his wife formed Bell Trading Post. Choosing a location along the route of the newly established highway “Route 66”. Following the business plan of famed entrepreneur Fred Harvey, Jack hoped to support his family selling locally made Native American jewelry to travelers passing through Albuquerque New Mexico. The rectangle shaped buckle features a centered 1900 Morgan Silver dollar flanked by stamped images of "sun rays" and "bear claws", and flowers. The buckle has a bright finish to the face, the reverse has a rich patina throughout. Measures 1.5"W x 2.5"L, weight 55.5 gms.

Ed Komakhuk Wood & Soapstone Inuit Spirit Masks

For your consideration are two carved wood and soapstone Inuit Spirit Mask done by Edward Komakhuk in Nome, Alaska circa 1995. Inuit carved wood spirit masks have been us...moreed in Alaska since 1801 to depict the faces of helping spirits and are worn by shamans, or angakok, during ritual dances. The masks represent the shaman's guardian animal spirits, and when the shaman has a strong bond with the spirit, the spirit may allow the shaman to see its face. Some masks have hinges that reveal the face of an animal within the mask, while others do not have hinges and simply show the face. The masks are often made from wood or furred or de-haired skin. They are inspired by visions and tradition, and are carefully hand carved from locally sourced materials such as spruce or cottonwood. The masks are also sometimes embellished with hand painting and rabbit fur. The first and taller one is spilt down the middle showing one side carved from soapstone and the other side carved from wood. It shows a walrus face and tusks carved from wood in the eye of the soapstone side and is adorned with feathers on the edges of the face. It is set on a small wood base and is signed on the bottom reading, "Edward Komakhuk Nome, AK 95". The second and shorter one is carved from wood and shows a slight frown on the face. It is adorned with feathers along the edges and one sticking out of the mouth. It has a larger stand than the taller one and is marked on the bottom reading, "Eddie Komakhuk Nome, AK 95". Both pieces show good condition overall with little to no wear and no signs of obvious damage is noted. The taller piece measures 9 5/8" L x 8 3/4" W x 1 5/8" D, while the smaller piece measures 8" L x 4 5/8" W x 2" D. They have a collective weight of 4 ounces.

Inuit Eskimo Trade Dolls Mid to Late 1900s (2)

Featured in this lot are two Inuit Eskimo Native American dolls on stands circa mid to late 1900s. The first and smaller doll shows long, white hair that has been woven i...morento a large, single braid and is wearing a fur jacket, pants and boots. Her face exhibits yarn facial features. The bottom of the boots are made with leather and one foot has been marked, "Mars John Twin Falls, AK". It is standing on a white colored doll stand. The second and larger doll shows no makers mark. The doll is wearing a large, black fur hooded coat, and is adorned with trade beads throughout of various colors. Her facial features are also made up of beads in colors of black, blue and red. The doll is wearing hide mukluk moccasins. Both dolls show good construction and condition overall with little to no wear present. The larger doll's stand is flimsy and prone to falling over if not balanced correctly. The smaller doll measures 11 1/8" L x 6" W, while the large one measures 17" L x 5 1/2" W. They have a collective weight of 1 pound and 6 ounces.
