"Northwestern Fights & Fighters", Cyrus Brady

Lot # 599 (Sale Order: 552 of 708)

Presented in this lot is "Northwestern Fights & Fighters", 1923, by Cyrus Townsend Brady. Brady (1861–1920), was a journalist, historian and adventure writer, who publish...moreed over 70 novels, all with an accurate historical basis, many of them based on incidents and historical figures in American history. "Northwest Fights and Fighters", part of Brady's American Fights & Fighters Series, focuses specifically on two wars, the Nez Perce War and the Modoc War, which the United States Army fought against the indigenous Indian tribes of the north west in the period following the American Civil War. The Nez Perce War was fought against that tribe under Chief Joseph's inspired leadership and the Modoc War was a grueling, bitter campaign fought in the inhospitable lava beds of northern California (called Ktai' Tala by the Modocs). The accounts and recollections of these two war comprise the entire book and Brady therefore deals with his subjects in some detail. He has particularly drawn upon the first hand narratives of those combatants who fought on both sides of the conflicts and this very much enhances the book's value, since these accounts rarely appear elsewhere in print. Illustrated with original drawings, maps and photographs, including the frontispiece photograph of Chief Joseph. The reddish cloth bound gold gilt hardcover exhibits slight scuffing and staining, gilt is faded, spine is loose at joints. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. Measures 5.5"W x 8.25"L x 1.5"D

"Levi's Round Up of Cowboy Lore" Rare Poster 1950s

Lot # 607 (Sale Order: 560 of 708)

Featured in this lot is this rare, "Levi's Round Up of Cowboy Lore - World's Grand Champion Cowboy" poster designed by Jo Mora and printed in 1950 by Italian printing com...morepany Arti Grafiche Occhipinti (Graphic Arts Occhipinti). The iconic "Evolution of the Cowboy" photograph by Jo Mora was first created as a Salinas Rodeo promotional item before being repurposed as Levi Strauss Company advertising in 1950. An illustrated encyclopedia entry on the cowboy that includes details on the different kinds of cowboys can be found in Mora's work. In the center is a scene from a rodeo. Images tracing the history of the cowboy surround the map. The revised title of the poster features an image of the 1950 World's Champion Cowboy Buckle, which was given by the firm to "the Champion All-Around cowboy of the year." The original artwork's silhouettes of cowboys and their horses have been replaced with wording that links Levi's to the cowboy lifestyle that surrounds the Sweetheart of the Rodeo. This is the first of the map's two Levi states. The first one has the word "LEVI'S" in red text with white lettering. The poster shows good condition overall with some wear present from its age and handling over the years. No signs of obvious damage is present.
