Union Civil War Image With Period Lap Desk And Civil War Letters Sold As Lot

Lot # 251 (Sale Order: 57 of 236)

These items came from a NC Estate and is one of the Top Lots in this Auction. The lot consists of a Union Civil War Soldier Dagaurotype. Period Lap Desk, and several Civil War Letters. I believe the Lap Desk belonged to Mary Rehrer. There are several letters addressed to her. I will give a brief summary of the contents of the letters. In one of the letters from Fayetteville, Va. it talks about the Rebs shelling their troops for more than 2 hours. I believe there to be 2 war letters, and several post and pre Civil War letters. The most important letter in my opinion is the letter from the War Department in Washington written the day after Lincoln was shot, dated April 16th 1865. It talks about the town being in an uproar and talks about the President being shot at Ford's Theatre and died in the house across the street. This letter is signed by William Bickford, Prov Mar Officer. The Dag. Photo could be John Rehrer but I cannot be sure. This Lap Desk is being Sold with the contents that was in it when we received it. We have not removed any part of it. This is a Great Historical Lot being Offered at Live Auction with NO Reserve! Good Luck!!...more
