Civil War Starr 1858 Double Action Percussion Revolver Featured in Guns & Ammo Magazine "Handguns"

Lot # 246 (Sale Order: 267 of 453)

S# 7734 on Barrel Hinge, Cylinder, under hammer, on wood grips, and on grip strap frame // Marked “STARR. ARMS. Co. NEW. YORK.” on the left side of the frame. The right i...mores marked “STARR’S PATENT JAN. 15. 1856” // This revolver has been featured in the Guns & Ammo Magazine "Handguns" April/May 2019 issue on Pages 8 & 9 - Article titled "A Starr is Born" By Bob Campbell, as well as in American Gunsmith Volume XXXIV-Number 7-July 2019, Pages 14-17 - This lot will include both the Guns & Ammo Magazine and the American Gunsmith Signed by the author of the Articles "Bob Cambell" all in a Cushioned Briefcase //// History: About 23,000 double-action Starr revolvers were manufactured in Yonkers, Binghamton, and Morrisania, New York, from 1858 to 1867 by Eben Townsend Starr of New York City, grandson of Nathan Starr and son of Nathan Starr, Jr., famous U. S. swordmakers and riflemakers of Middletown, Connecticut. Of these, most were purchased by the U.S. Army. Starr revolvers, in both single-and double-action models, represented over 12 percent of the sidearms issued to Union cavalry troops. Only Colt and Remington revolvers were more frequently encountered in the hands of Northern soldiers. Starr double-action .44 caliber revolvers, with serial numbers from 1 to about 23,000, were manufactured first, and Starr single-action .44 caliber revolvers, with serial numbers from about 23,000 to about 54,000, last.// One of the earliest American double-action revolvers, this six-shot revolver has a six-inch round barrel rifled with six grooves. Over-all length is 11 5/8 inches, weight is two pounds 12 ounces, and the cylinder is 1 7/8 inches long. These revolvers have a steel blade front sight dovetailed into the barrel. A V-notch cut into the hammer lip serves as a rear sight. The Starr revolver is provided with a knurled screw on the right side of the frame which, when removed, allows the barrel to tip downwards on its hinged frame so that the cylinder can be removed. //// Condition: The overall condition is very good. This is a great example of a Civil War Cavalry Revolver & Great for any Civil War Collector - The original blue finish has faded and left behind a very nice antique patina - There is very little pitting - orignal walnut grips are nice and solid with small knicks on bottom and faint handling marks - All lettering is crisp and clear - rifling is still present in the bore - Mechanically functions

Massachusetts Arms Co. Trigger Revolving Conversion Maynard Primed Percussion Revolver in Case

Lot # 247 (Sale Order: 268 of 453)

S# 284 on Receiver, door, and on the frame inside the grip and "484" is on the bottom of the top strap // 3" BBL // Comes in a nice wooden presentation box with a handle ...more// This is classified as an antique. It is one of 200-300 revolvers originally manufactured using the trigger revolving mechanism and subsequently converted to hammer revolving by Massachusetts Arms Co. immediately upon the expiration of the Colt patent in 1857. This variation is most easily distinguished by the pin behind the trigger to limit travel. It has the standard Mass. Arms and Maynard markings "Maynard's Patent Sep 22 1845" on door and Mass Arms Co., Chicopee Falls" on top as well as "Patent JAN 2 1855" on back grip strap, there is a faint "3" on the bottom. //// Condtion: Fine, retains 10% original blue finish and no traces of original case colors with mostly a smooth grey patina, floral scroll engraving and faint floral/naval/arms themed etching on the cylinder - The grips are also good and solid with some light dings, scratches, & wear. Mechanically functions but it appears that the trigger spring bar was repaired at some point not allowing the hammer to go 100%. The hinge that locks over the barrel doesn't seem to want to lock all the time. Overall a nice piece of history in good/moderate condition and would make a nice addition to a collection

US Springfield Model 1884 .45-70 Trapdoor Carbine

Lot # 250 (Sale Order: 271 of 453)

S# 457792 Manf in 1889 where there were 36,523 rifles produced & 5000 carbines - This is believed to be a converted rifle - 22" Barrel - Barrel band marked "U" - Rear Fli...morep up sight - Butt plate marked "US", The left rear section of the barrel is marked with the "VP/Eagle Head/P" proof in front of the receiver with a small "A" proof directly on top of the barrel in front of the receiver. The breech block is marked "US/MODEL/1884". The lock plate is marked with the spread wing American Eagle and "US SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer and it is fitted with the correct three click tumbler // The reason I believe this to be a rifle conversion is that you can see the bayonet slot filled with a piece of wood underside (last picture), doesn't have what looks like an original front sight, there is no mounted bar or saddle ring present, and stock appears to have been refinished due to lack of cartouches and amazing condition //// Condition: In the state that it's in it is near mint and beautiful conversion or no conversion - 60% CCH finish to receiver plate, around 60% of the CCH colors are still present on trapdoor, Barrel retains around 10% finish all with a shiny clear coat and a nice brown patina overall - Wood stock looks amazing, almost like new with a few small dings (again, stock appears to have been sanded down and refinished), mechanically functions smoothly with poor rifling in the bore - Whoever did the conversion/refinishing of this rifle did an amazing job none the less and would make a great shooter/wall hanger

Rare Remington Experimental "New York Contract" .50-70 Govt Antique 1871 Rolling Block Rifle

Lot # 250A (Sale Order: 272 of 453)

Developed in the late 1860's by Joseph Rider, Remington rolling blocks were among the breech-loading rifles and carbines that replaced the muzzle-loading firearms that ha...mored been used during the Civil War, and became the standard American weapons of the postwar years. About 15,000 contract rifles were made in 1872 by Remington for the New York National Guard // Tang Marked "Remington Ilion NY USA Pat.May 3d nov 15th 1864 april 17th 1866 Aug 27th 1867 nov 7th 1871" This rifle is commonly misplaced for the Springfield model 1872 Rolling block rifle but the difference is the amount of barrel bands. This rifle is supposed to have 3, the springfield only has 2. // Original Cleaning Rod //// Condition: Not a lot of original finish left on this rifle, but it has a nice antique patina with surface rust present and spotting - in all original configuration missing barrel band out of 3 // Wood stock is in great original condition for it's age with 1 crack up near receiver, still complete and solid with a few handiling marks, 1 chip up near barrel tip // Mechanically functions great with an impressive shiny bore with good rifling which is unheard of for these rifles
