FACTORY ENGRAVED CASED MANTON BREVET COLT ARMY

REVOLVER WITH GLASS TOP. Cal. 44. S# 6849. This intriguing blued steel mounted octagonal barrel Army revolver made without recoil shields is 14" overall, 7 7/8" octagonal...more barrel engraved to top flat: “COLT’S PATENT MANUFACTURED EXPRESSLY FOR MANTON & CO CALCUTTA”. Loading arm catch is unique spring that fits notched arm. Manton is among the most prestigious of 18th & 19th century English arms makers, still in business today. Revolver has scroll engraving on frame, trigger guard & backstrap. The cylinder is entirely covered in same scrolls. Beautiful presentation. Casing is glass topped with beveled glass, form fitted for screwdriver, caps, cleaning rod, and flask. CONDITION: revolver retains virtually all old refinished blue, nicely figured burl grips retain most all there high luster varnish. Mechanically crisp with bright shiny rifled bore. The barrel address has a name or logo that has purposely been removed by punch marks which also partially obscures “COLT” in address. Regardless, this is a beautiful presentation. Leather veneered casing is sound with scuffing, Components are fair. (01-22884/JS). $3,000-4,000.

Fram...moree, bbl., grip straps, loading lever & hammer have vine type scroll factory engraving. Fish head engraved hammer. Full silver finish. Bbl., frame, grip straps, cyl. & wedge have matching numbers. The dot below the S#s denote factory silver finish. 1 Piece fancy walnut grip w/ German silver presentation plates in both sides. Left side is engraved “to Chief Brown”. Right side is engraved “New York City”. Serial number to grips does not match the rest of the revolver, Grips S# 71786. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: presentation Colt English oak casing w/ circular brass medallion in lid. Inside of lid has paper label w/ loading & cleaning directions. Red cloth fitted interior shows fading & wear. Case contains powder flask, 2 cavity mold, nipple wrench, slotted tip cleaning rod, cap tin, case key & bullets. CONDITION: silver finish remains bright on grip straps, bolsters & other protected areas w/ balance having a gray appearance. Grips show light wear. Very good mechanics. Blue & case colored finish w/ iron backstrap & large, round trigger guard. 1-Piece walnut grip. Fine English mahogany case w/ vacant brass nameplate on lid. Lid interior has paper directions for loading & cleaning. Red baize-lined compartmented interior contains Dixson bag flask, 2-cavity Colt Patent mold, nipple wrench & cap tin. CONDITION: very good. Blue parts have largely faded to a mottled plum/gray patina. Cyl. retains over 75% scene w/ a large dent over one chamber. Frame & loading lever show a small amount of case colors. Sutherland Collection. Bbl. 7 1/2" octagon w/ New York address & cone style sight. Round six shot cyl. w/ naval engagement scene scroll engraving. Case colored frame is marked of left side “U.S.” beneath the Colt’s Patent marking. Backstrap & 3rd model round trigger guard have natural brass finish. Frame, trigger guard, backstrap & cyl. are serial numbered “51”. Loading lever is serial numbered “9”. Bbl. & wedge are unnumbered. Backstrap has “K” inspection mark, w/ “M” inspection mark on trigger guard & “T” inspection mark on cyl. Cyl. & trigger guard have inspection mark “H”. Refinished 1 piece walnut grips have partially visible cartouches. CONDITION: very fine. Bbl. retains over 80% lightly faded blue showing edge wear. Cyl. has faded to gray showing spotted corrosion & retains very good scene. 40% case colored remains on the frame & fittings. Brass has acquired a mild patina showing dark spots. Period copy of a Colt Model 1851 Navy single action percussion revolver produced by an unknown mfg....more Revolver is devoid of markings, save for the S#s, "36CAL" on the left side of the trigger guard, and a "B.H" stamp on the butt. Iron frame, cyl, bbl., and loading lever with brass trigger guard and backstrap. Frame is mounted with a 1-piece smooth wood grip. All numbers are matching and include the frame, cyl., cyl. base pin, bbl., bbl. wedge, loading lever, bbl./loading lever stud, trigger guard, as well as the rear grip strap. CONDITION: iron components exhibit a dark gray patina, with some scattered spots of light pitting overall. Brass components exhibit a mellow patina, with some scattered spots of darker discoloration overall. Bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots of dark pitting and retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips exhibit scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. A nice period copy of a Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver. PROVENANCE: Former G. Top flat of octagonal bbl...more. is marked with Colt's Hartford, CT address. Left side of frame is marked "COLTS/ PATENT". Cyl. is engraved with Colt's stagecoach scene. Rear grip strap exhibits a now faint hand inscription, which appears to read "GROSTIUS G. TO OWEN BROWN". Brass trigger guard and grip strap, with 1-piece smooth wood grip. All numbers are matching and include the frame, cyl. base pin, cyl., bbl., bbl. wedge, loading lever, trigger guard, as well as the backstrap. CONDITION: iron components retain scarce traces of their original factory finishes, with the balance retaining a mottled gray patina and varying degrees of pitting overall. Brass trigger guard and grip strap exhibit a pleasing mellow patina, with some areas of darker discoloration overall. Bore exhibits moderate dark pitting and strong rifling throughout. Cyl. does not rotate when action is cocked. Grip exhibits some flaking to its varnish, with scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (01-25015/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.

MIE PREFECTURE, JAPAN MARKED SMITH & WESSON NO. 2

SA REVOLVER NOTED IN NOVEMBER 2006 ARTICLE IN THE GUN REPORT. Cal. 32 RF Long. S# 61206. In the article "Some Early Smith and Wesson Export Revolvers" by Robert M. Bricke...morer, this revolver is noted in the article. The article states "Following the Civil War, Smith and Wesson became much more active in selling their wars overseas. In 1868 fairly large groups of both Model Number 1, Second Issue and Model Number 2 Armys seem to have reached Japan. According to Roy G. Jinks, Smith and Wesson's resident historian, these were probably first shipped to their French Agent in Paris, Charles May, and from there sent on to Japan...Another Number 2 export, which left the factory in late 1868 with serial number 61206, is marked on the right hand barrel flat near the frame "2 thousand 9078", then somewhat faded from wear, "Mie Prefecture" The octagon 6" barrel has rib w/ mfg. markings & German silver blade front sight. 6 Shot round cylinder with assembly # "229". Two piece rosewood grips w/ matching numbered on back of right panel. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of the Nov. 2006 The Gun Report article. CONDITION: metal has gray patina appearance w/ faint traces of polish blue finish showing wear to markings, marks, cleaned pitting & scratches. Good grip panel with large crack on back of right panel, along with scattered marks. Very good bore. (01-24966/MD). ANTIQUE. $800-1,500.

SMITH & WESSON CIVIL WAR ARMY REVOLVER, CHARLES T.

Lot # 3015A (Sale Order: 16 of 487)      

PARKS, 69TH US COLORED TROOPS. Cal. 32, S# 21487. This well used "as found" Smith & Wesson revolver left the factory in mid 1864, Charles T. Parks had just mustered in a...mores captain of Company C, 69th United States Colored Troops on October 24, 1864. His previous service had been with the 117 Illinois infantry from September of 1862 where he rose to the rank of sergeant. The 69th Colored Infantry was stationed in the same theater of war that Parks had just left in Eastern Arkansas. This unremarkable, well used revolver is featured in a four-page September 2001 Gun Report article where author Mike Bricker gives a couple theories of this revolver's origin. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large file of research, copy of September 2001 Gun Report article. CONDITION: good overall, great metal with pitting, large piece of left grip is broken off and has been for a long time based on the matching patina to metal and well patinated exposed wood. Revolver will not hold full cock, otherwise mechanics are good, discernible rifled bore. The stamped name on the left side of barrel housing is discernible but light. PROVENANCE: Lifelong collection of Robert "Mike" Bricker. (01-25011/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.

Revolver w...moreas manufactured early in 1865. Revolver is accompanied by a holster add an old belt with buckle. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of research trying to type to John Kinney of the 27th Michigan infantry, however he died in 1864, before the manufacture of the gun, but maybe a relative. CONDITION: good to very good overall, all matching serial numbers and assembly number, about 90% original nickel or silver finish is retained on barrel and frame with freckling and some pitting on barrel lug. Ivories are well fit with one small chip at rear toe, age patina. Mechanically fine, good rifle bore. PROVENANCE: Lifelong collection of Robert "Mike" Bricker. (01-24976/JS). ANTIQUE. $700-900.

CONDITION: grips show an added varnish with scattered flaking, dings, and handling marks. Metal retains 20% of its blue with overall fading to gray, a few light dings, and some scattered oxidation.
