R...moreear of bbl. marked w/ "P", "(Eagle)", "V" & "U.S.". American walnut stock w/ bottom mounted sling swivels & faint inspector's cartouche on left stock flat. Buttplate dated 1816 on tang. Ramrod present. CONDITION: stock has softened edges w/ added finish, a pair of small added holes on toe of butt, another pair of small holes on top of wrist, a few chips, a couple grain cracks, scattered dings & handling wear. Metal was cleaned to bright w/ some tool marks at rear of bbl., scattered oxidation & light pitting. Oxidized bore. (01-23840/MJC). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,200.

Lock marked w/ an eagle over "NEW HAVEN". Walnut stock w/ three bands & bottom mounted sling swivels. Left side of walnut stock has circular NY acceptance cartouche that reads "V/BY/I.M". Trumpet shaped ramrod present. Bottom of stock has two large carved sets of initials ahead of trigger guard. CONDITION: stock shows a few chips in ramrod channel, scattered dings & handling wear. Socket bayonet was cleaned & shows overall pitting. CONDITION: stock set has a set of initials on right side of butt, a couple cracks. overall dings & heavy handling wear from the years. Cal. 70. NSN.56” overall, 40” round barrel, British proofed, “LONDON” stamped, pinned with 3 brass ramrod pipes, iron trumpet tip ramrod, bayonet lug on top. Bras...mores buttplate, triggerguard, and sideplate. Rebated engraved lockplate, serpentine cock, roller frizzen stamped “A. W. SPIES / WARRANTED” Spies was large New York gun dealer and this dates circa 1820. Stock is checkered at wrist with small silver vacant diamond shaped thumb plate. CONDITION: Very good overall, appears as found, complete and original, iron and brass patina, mechanics fine with smooth clear bore. Accompanying Brown Bess style bayonet has 14.5” blade, fits well with matching patina. (01-22952/JS). ANTIQUE. $600-800.

Iron ramrod. Socket bayonet is marked "U.S." on the base of the bayonet flat. CONDITION: iron components exhibit a dark mottled gray patina, with scattered areas of dark oxidation overall. Iron components exhibit a pleasing mellow patina. Stock exhibits some some scattered marks from handling and storage, with a crack on the right side of the barrel channel. CONDITION: metal is a mix of rust brown, blue/gray patina w/ numerous impact marks & pitting throughout. Markings atop frame still remain legible. Action appears to work properly; pulling the ring places hammer at half cock & then you must thumb the hammer to full cock. Nipples are rusty & peened. Grips are dinged, dented & chipped w/ an exceptionally faint outline of an inspector cartouche bottom of left panel. Bore retains visible rifling but rust throughout. (01-23513/CW). 2 M1816 RECONVERSION FLINTLOCK PISTOLS BY SIMEON

NORTH OF MIDDLETOWN, CT. 1) 54 Cal. NSN. Bbl. 9 1/16”. An early example of the M1816, probably produced in 1817-18. Round barrel with “US” & “P” on the left sid...moree. The lock is marked under the brass pan “S NORTH U (eagle) S MIDLN CONN.” Iron trigger guard, buttcap, backstrap, double barrel band, and side plate. Walnut stock shows a light image of a cartouche and has a hickory ramrod with an iron ferrule threaded for cleaning & ball removal. CONDITION: all iron parts have been cleaned and appear mostly bright. Lock holds half cock only. Wood shows the usual dents & dings with a small crack extending from the left barrel channel to the side plate. The cock may be a correct replacement. Fair bore. 2) 54 Cal. NSN. Bbl. 9 1/16”. A later example of the M1816, probably produced in 1819-20. Round barrel with “US” & “P” on the left side. The lock is marked under the brass pan “S NORTH U (eagle) S MIDLTN CONN.” Iron trigger guard, buttcap, backstrap, double barrel band, and side plate. Walnut stock is clearly stamped “V” behind the side plate. Original hickory ramrod with an iron ferrule threaded for cleaning & ball removal. CONDITION: all iron parts have a medium gray, mottled patina. Lock holds both full & half cock. Wood shows the usual dents & dings. Good bore. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22403/BF). $1,400-1,800.

RARE & FINE WATERS FLAT LOCK MARTIAL SINGLE SHOT

PISTOL. Cal. 54 NSN. There is whole genre of “Flat Lock” Waters pistols. These pistols are transitional between models 1836 & 1842, privately sold with much variation...more. Usually well used and worn, no doubt many found their way South for militias starving for pistols at beginning of Civil War. This example is in beautiful “as found” condition, 14” overall, 8.5” round barrel with no proofs. Barrel was from surplus 1836. A drum bolster with square nut stamped “7”. Unique flat lock stamped with eaglehead / “A.H. WATERS & CO / MILBURY MASS” still has case colors and shows no wear. Pistol was probably never fired as the bore is mirror bright. CONDITION: fine overall, metal gray/bright, crisp markings, well fit stock with sharp edges, fine action, bright shiny smooth bore. (01-23811/JS). ANTIQUE. $700-900.

RARE RIFLED WATERS FLAT LOCK MARTIAL SINGLE SHOT

PISTOL. Cal. 54. NSN. Collecting flat lock Waters would be an interesting genre as they are neglected in market. These pistols are transitional between models 1836 & 1842...more, privately sold with much variation, often well used and worn, and some finding homes in Southern militias during the Civil War. This example is in “as found” condition, 14” overall, 8.5” barrel proofed at breech “US / JH / P”, mixed iron & brass furniture, lock marked with eaglehead over “A. H. WATERS & CO / MILBURY MASS ”, captured swivel loading assembly, rounded serpentine hammer. The most unusual feature is rudimentary rifling at muzzle though fades deep in bore, not seen on nother examples we have seen. CONDITION: very good overall, complete & original, dark iron patina, crisp markings, well fit stock with sharp edges, fine action, clean partly rifled bore. (01-23812/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.

Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. 8". Lock & upper tang both have 1846 date. Brass blade front sight. Lock marked "US/H.ASTON". Rear of bbl. marked "JCB/P". Brass band, trigger guard, s...moreideplate & back strap. Walnut stock w/ two faint inspector cartouches. Ramrod present. CONDITION: stock appears sanded w/ added oil finish, a notable gouge on belly, a shallow chipped area on left side of grip frame, some scattered long cracks, scratches & handling wear. Brass parts are a light yellow color w/ scattered oxidation & dings. Balance of metal is a brown patina w/ some pitting at rear of bbl., a few dings & scattered oxidation. Pitted bore. (01-23637/MJC). ANTIQUE. $400-700.
