Lot # 3176 (Sale Order: 176 of 487)      

Overall length: 37”. Blade length: 31 1/2". This European court sword likely dates from about 1840 to 1860. The blade has a single wide fuller and is decorated with gold ...morehighlighted etching on a blued field over the first 9 3/4". Etching includes foliate & patriotic motifs. A small panel near the hilt is etched “A S & C”. Gilded brass hilt with a single turned down guard that features a lion in oval above a decorative swag. Knuckle bow depicts Cupid on one side and a 4-petal flower on the other. Fancy foliate & geometrically decorated pommel. Certifiably antique ivory grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with minor staining. Blued field is approx. 80% complete. Gold highlighted etching is nearly 100%. Hilt retains most of its original gilded finish. There is a small repair at the base of the knuckle bow. Grip appears to have been heavily scrubbed. (02-20020/BF). $250-400.

Plain knuckle bow enters a rounded pommel. Grip is spiraled on the front and plain on the reverse. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a cleaned, medium gray finish. The blade is etched on one side with a crowned “Z” along with a large spray o...moref arms and the date “1748”. The other side of the blade has a crowned rampant lion with a sword above a short illegible inscription. Brass hilt with a heart-shaped counterguard and straight lobed quillon. Plain knuckle bow with urn-shaped pommel. Wood grip partially wrapped with wire. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray finish with nicks to the edge. The etching is generally clear, though difficult to discern in a few scattered spots. Hilt remains quite strong, but the wire wrapping of the grip is about 40% complete. (02-20049/BF). $600-850.

Brass hilt with a double kidney shaped guard featuring sprays of arms & trumpets on the un...morederside with sprays of arms alone on the top. Drop pendulous quillon with tall pas d’ane. Knuckle bow has central scroll & foliate decoration. Spherical pommel has a similar motif as seen on the guard. Iron wire-wrapped grip alternating with copper tape. Copper Turk’s head knots at the top & base of the grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with scattered peppery staining. Hilt has been cleaned & coated with a preservative. Grip is 100% intact. (02-20058/BF). $500-800.

Plain knuckle bow with an iron screw attaching it to the melon-shaped pommel. 2-Section brass spiraled grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina with evidence of some pitting. Hilt has been cleaned many years ago and is reacquiring a pleasing mustard patina. (02-20060/BF). $500-750.

Hilt has a pleasing mustard patina. The wrap is about 60% complete. Scabbard mounts have a pleasing patina. Leather body is a bit flexed but remains solid. Frog shows light to moderate wear. The slightly curved blade has a single m...moreedium sized fuller and is etched over 6” of its length. Etching includes foliate motifs with a dog or lion on both sides. There is a short inscription on both sides that appears to be French. Simple brass crossguard along with a brass ferrule & pommel. Horn grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark, mottled patina but the etching remains visible & reasonably crisp. Hilt has a deep patina and shows light overall wear. (02-20097/BF). $300-450.

EUROPEAN SMALLSWORD LIKELY OF SPANISH ORIGIN.

Overall length: 40 3/8”. Blade length: 34”. Plain blade has a central medium fuller and is marked “2” at the ricasso. Even though the style of this sword is 18th century,...more we believe the sword dates to the first half of the 19th century and probably saw use as a court sword. The hilt is believed to be silver plate and is of a smallsword form. It shows an oval cupped disc guard and rudimentary pas d’ane. The guard, knuckle bow, hexagonal urn pommel, and grip all have a similar knot-like motif. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium to light gray overall patina. Hilt has an overall light layer of tarnish. (02-20098/BF). $500-700.

Gilded brass hilt of simple form but with heavy embellishments. The guard has foliate motifs that extend to the knuckle bow. The ferrule is shaped like a crown, and the pommel cap emulates that pattern. There is a large capstan at the top. The grip is shaped antler. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray, cleaned finish. Hilt retains traces of original gilding over the brass. Grip has a filled area opposite the knuckle bow. (02-20100/BF). $300-500.

It has a plain, fl...moreat, wide blade that has a very slight false edge. The iron guard has 2 bulbous ends with geometric decoration throughout. There is an engraved iron ferrule with a small iron capstan. The 1-piece wood grip has 3 oval iron escutcheons on each side. There is a small iron chain knuckle bow from the top of the grip to the end of one quillon. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray overall patina. Crossguard is loose. Hilt generally shows light to moderate wear with deep patinas. The chain knuckle bow is loose at the crossguard. (02-20101/BF). $400-700.

Overall length: 30". Blade length: 21 5/8". This hunting sword is likely of Germanic origin and dates from the late 18th to the early 19th century. The blade has a single...more wide fuller and has gold highlighted etching on a blued field over 7 1/2” of its length. Etching includes a spray of arms, jumping stag, foliate motifs, geometric motifs, a winged head, and a winged heart. The brass guard is of simple cruciform style. Plain brass ferrule. The 1-piece wood grip has 3 oval brass escutcheons on each side. There is an unassociated partial scabbard with this sword. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray overall patina. Gold & blue decorations are about 75%. Brass has a deep mustard patina. It appears the capstan rivet is missing. The unassociated scabbard is missing its bottom section. (02-20103/BF). $400-600.

EUROPEAN ARTILLERY STILETTO, LIKELY OF ITALIAN

Lot # 3189A (Sale Order: 190 of 487)      

ORIGIN. This solid steel stiletto measures 10 1/2" in length with a 7” triangular blade. The crossguard has lobed quillons, and the pommel is decorated w/ engraved scenes...more. The grip appears to be turned steel. Weapons like this could be used as a secondary weapon in the left hand during a sword fight, or were used to spike artillery weapons if capture was imminent. These weapons date from the late 16th century to the early 18th century, and this example appears to be circa 1680. A fine example of a rarely seen weapon from an early period. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina w/ minor evidence of cleaned pitting. There is a bit of cleaned pitting on the crossguard, as well as the pommel. The grip area shows light pitting. Enfield rifles wer...moree imported to America in large quantities by both the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War. Plain blade has a single wide fuller near the spine. There is a small stamp near the hilt that resembles a hot air balloon. Iron crossguard numbered “836” with muzzle ring at the top. Iron pommel in the shape of a bird’s head. 2-Piece black composite grips held on by 4 pins on one side and 3 pins with an iron spring on the other. Iron mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina. Hilt has a somewhat darker patina. Grips are undamaged. Scabbard body is a bit flaked but sturdy. Mounts have a dark patina. (02-20067/BF). $250-400.

Darkened steel hilt with muzzle ring attached to the guar...mored and a quillon descending from the muzzle ring. There is a slot at the top of the knuckle bow, presumably for a knot. 2-Piece black composite grips with a slide area at the top for fitting to a rifle. Iron spring is complete. Iron mounted black leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with minor staining. The edge has several shallow nicks. Hilt shows light wear. The crowned eagle front pla...morete measures 6 3/4" x 5”. The interior of the pocket, as well as the flap, are lined in coarse red wool. There are 3 brass loops at the top for suspension. This early chapeau measures 18 1/2" from point to point, and rises over 11” from the low point. It appears to be made of fine black beaver felt with a woven trim. There i...mores a large 4 1/2" gold bullion cockade with a woven black drop and 4 gold bullion cords terminated with an early 1-piece artillery button. The artillery button is actually attached to another domed button. The interior lining appears to be black silk. There is no sweatband. CONDITION: hat displays quite well flat, but the crown of the hat is heavily damaged with losses. There is some separation around the trim particularly in the rear center. The artillery button may be an addition. (02-20119/BF). $400-600.

This early 19th century shako has a black leather body with black felt over the exterior front, back, & sides. There is a red wool band around the top, and the crown is s...moremooth leather. There is a metal cockade on the front that appears to have been white painted. The front plate depicts a crown over an oval with 3 fleur de lis over an arc with the number “50” cut out. Brass faux scale chinstrap with fleur de lis side posts. Leather visor. Leather sweatband with muslin bag in the top. The rear outside of the helmet has a lion head cord holder. CONDITION: helmet shows moderate to heavy wear but there is no major damage. The crown has some losses particularly near the front edge. (02-20135/BF). $400-700.

EUROPEAN INFANTRY SHAKO.

Lot # 3196 (Sale Order: 197 of 487)      

This shako, at first glance, seems to be a French shako for the 1st Infantry and dates likely between 1825 & 1845. The front plate appears to be French, but the cockade a...morebove it is likely Prussian. The shako appears to have had some alterations in the past and may be created from different parts of shakos from different time periods. This example has a black felt body over heavy cardboard. It has leather trim on the top, sides, & bottom with a leather visor. The brass diamond front plate has a cutout number “1”. Above the front plate is a black & white Prussian cockade. The shako cords are white cotton. The scaled chinstrap is an early example. The interior has a brown leather sweatband with a cotton muslin bag liner. Although parts of this shako are early, we do not guarantee the age of the entire piece. CONDITION: in general, the shako shows moderate wear with alterations. (02-20137/BF). $300-500.

FRENCH CADET OR DRUMMER BOY UNIFORM.

Lot # 3197 (Sale Order: 198 of 487)      

This coat would likely fit a child aged 8 to 10. It has a gray body piped in white throughout. The overall design shows a faux plastron chest with hemispherical ball butt...moreons. The tails are lined in red and trimmed in red on the outside. The outside of the tails have 2 faux pockets & flaming bomb appliques at the base of the tail. At one time, the tunic had a faux vest attached to the interior. The right side of the faux vest is now missing. The body of the coat is lined in quilted tan cotton, and the sleeves are lined in a similar material. There is an interior stamp that appears to read “L. MARTIN COSTUMIER 18 RUE DU PETIT _HOU__”. CONDITION: 7 original buttons are missing off the front, but the tail/cuff buttons are complete. There is minor moth damage to the body of the coat. The lining is a bit shredded, particularly at the collar. (02-20157/BF). $200-400.

This attractive nautilus shaped horn is covered in intricately fitted bone panels w/ numerous brass pins attaching each of the panels. There are 2 suspension loops on the...more inside of the curve and the tip has a turned finial as a cover. The butt end is covered w/ a large silver or silver plate cap w/ a central bone dispensing tip. The overall size is approx. 7 1/2" x 5”. CONDITION: the horn does show expected wear w/ a few very minor chips & losses to the bone plates. The early bone has a wonderful yellowed patina. These early Mughal horns are quite difficult to find in any form or material. (02-21140/BF). $500-800.
