EARLY SCOTTISH FLAT STYLE POWDER HORN.

This horn measures approx. 10 1/2" x 4 1/4" at its widest point. It has a brass spout and a serrated edge at the butt with an iron chain for suspension. One side of the h...moreorn is engraved “DROMM. CLOGG. BOTHWEL. BRIDGE CAPN. PATTON”. The other side reads “S J . SHEELS 40 JNO ORR”. The Battle of Bothwell Bridge took place on June 22, 1679 and was fought between government troops and militant Presbyterian Covenanters. The battle signaled the end of the brief Presbyterian rebellion and took place over the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland. CONDITION: the horn is surprisingly solid and shows light to moderate wear overall. (02-17916/BF). $600-1,000.

This lot includes 2 plain powder horns. The first measures 12” in length and 2 1/2" across at the butt. The horn is octagonally faceted 3” from the spout with a raised oc...moretagonal ring at the spout. The butt plug is slightly domed and held in place by iron pins. The second horn measures 9 3/4" in length and 2 1/2" across at the butt. The horn has a carved spout with the original wood plug. The buttcap is slightly domed with a brass ring in the center. 1) Unmarked period made powder horn with threaded spot. Iron sling bracket on plug and on horn near spot. Thin brown leather sling. CONDITION: horn retains a dark patina,...more exhibiting scattered marks from storage and handling, and several cracks around the plug that have been reinforced with pins. Spout has broken and is missing a section on one side. 2) Large brass powder flask measuring 8 3/4" in length. Flask body exhibits a seashell motif on either side. CONDITION: flask exhibits heavy patina overall, with mild marks from storage and handling. 3) Brass powder flask measuring 7 7/8"" in length. Flask body exhibits a seashell motif on either side. CONDITION: flask exhibits heavy patina overall, with mild marks from storage and handling. 4) Small brass powder flask measuring 6" in length. Flask body exhibits a scene of 2 birds on either side. 2 VINTAGE SCOTTISH FLAT POWDER HORNS.

Lot # 3203 (Sale Order: 205 of 487)      

1) Overall length: 9 5/8”. Width: 3”. This horn has an elaborate gilded brass spout & buttcap. The spout plug is in the shape of a dragon head and has a pick on the other...more end. Both the spout and the butt are completely decorated with foliate & scroll motifs. The face of the horn has a large gilded brass applied spray of arms that includes a gun, sword, hat, flag, and powder horn. CONDITION: light wear overall. 2) Overall length: 8 1/4”. Width: 2 1/2". This horn has a wood plug & spout. The plug has a carved horn finial, and the spout has a bone plug with a pick on the end. The body of the horn has a silver inlay in the shape of a tulip with foliate motifs. CONDITION: very light wear. (02-17917/BF). $400-600.

The horn is 3” across at the butt, & the plug is held in place wi...moreth wooden pins. / 1 Powder flask measuring 9” with a fluted copper body & a brass charger. The charger is marked “AM FLASK & CAP CO”. / 1 Powder flask measuring 4 3/4". The flask has scroll decoration on a brass body with brass charger and a brass base with 2 chambers covered by small brass covers secured with a screw. / 1 Powder flask measuring 3 3/4" with a brass body & brass charger. The body is decorated with an eagle over crossed pistols surrounded by a glory and 13 stars. A banner beneath the eagle reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. / 1 Powder flask measuring 3 1/2" with a plain brass body & brass charger. The charger lever is broken. CONDITION: all items show light wear except as noted. The large and two smallest powder flasks have minor dents to the body. All chargers function except for the smallest flask. WONDERFUL PAIR OF MEXICAN CALLING HORNS.

Lot # 3205A (Sale Order: 208 of 487)      

1) This horn measures approx. 11 1/2" in length. It has a turned concave mouthpiece with an open butt. The deep engraving includes a man carrying a rifle & hunting w/ a d...moreog. Beside this visage is an early rendition of the Mexican national seal featuring an eagle w/ snake on cactus. Below this level is a large, fanciful cartouche w/ the initials “C.H.J.”. Opposite the cartouche is a running deer & jaguar in a palm forest. 2) This horn measures approx. 12" in length. It has a turned concave mouthpiece w/ an open butt. The deep engraving includes a man on horseback w/ another gentleman carrying a sword. Also in the upper section is a fanciful cartouche w/ the initials “C.T.J.”. The lower section shows a large spread-wing eagle flanked by Mexican flags. Opposite this is a dog w/ a duck in its mouth and a duck flying above the dog. Given the initials on this fine pair of calling horns, they probably belonged to brothers or a father & son pair. Horns like this were used to call dogs during the hunt. They were also used as an audible locator for hunters that became lost during extended hunts. CONDITION: both horns have a wonderful early patina & show expected wear. Neither horn shows any offensive damage and they both present an impressive visual impact. (02-21141/BF). $500-1,000.

CONDITION: the mold shows wear but is fully functional & complete. 2) An iron 36 Cal. bullet mold is for a Colt pistol. The entire mold, including the sprue cutter, are iron. The 2 cavities are for a conical & round bullet. The sprue cutter is marked “COLT’S PATENT”. CONDITION: iron appears to be heavily cleaned at one point, but has reacquired some patina. 3) An early iron, scissor-type bullet mold of approx. 36 Cal. CONDITION: the entire mold has a dark, oxidized patina. (02-20118/BF). $300-400.
