2 CIVIL WAR ERA PIPES.

Lot # 3109A (Sale Order: 126 of 697)      

1) ZOUAVE. A very interesting large Civil War era pipe measuring 16” in length with a twig stem mounted with a horn mouthpiece. The massive bowl has an ancient patina and...more is carved in the shape of a Zouave soldier’s head. The bearded and mustached gentleman is wearing a typical Zouave cap with a tassel at the end. He sports a grave expression with piercing eyes. CONDITION: the inner bowl is quite charred and was obviously used for a long period of time. The remainder of the pipe shows honest wear with expected patina. 2) ZOUAVE. A light-colored pipe bowl somewhat in the manner of Meerschaum depicting the head of a Zouave soldier. This soldier not only has a beard and mustache, but haunting glass eyes. He wears a typical Zouave-style hat with a large tassel at the back. As the pipe bowl approaches the stem (now missing), there is a repousse silver ferrule. CONDITION: bowl shows great age and wear with intense charring of the bowl. Outer material has expected wear and patina. (02-22834/BF). $700-1,000.

EXCAVATED EXAMPLE. This lot consists of 11 Hardee hat eagles, as worn on the side of the well-known Civil War era Hardee hat. This insignia did exist before the adoption ...moreof the Hardee hat and can often be seen on enlisted US M1851 and 1854 headgear. It is most famous, however, for holding up the brim on the side of the Hardee hat. CONDITION: excavated examples vary widely in condition from very good to very poor. Please see photographs for a more accurate rendition of condition. The non-excavated example has good detail with about 50% of its original gilding and two pins on the reverse. A fine selection of both excavated and non-excavated cavalry spurs. Many appear to be US M1859-style spurs, but there is great variation and there may even be a confedera...morete example or two in this group. 15 of the spurs are brass and two are iron. The iron examples are likely civilian or possibly officers’ spurs. There is significant variation in the rowels and some even appear hand-cut. Please refer to photographs for details of the spurs. The top flat of...more the octagonal bbl. is marked with Winchester's mfg. information, with "38 W.C.F." marked at the breech. Plain wood straight grip buttstock with plain wood forend. Brass tipped blade front sight with semi-buck horn V-notch rear sight. CONDITION: metal components exhibit heavy wear (with some of the markings having been partially or mostly worn away) and a dark gray patina, with scattered spots of oxidation and light to mild pitting present overall. Dark pitted bore, exhibiting fair to good rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with chipping present on the rear edge of the forend, at and around the receiver tangs, as well as around the buttplate. MAG." on the left side. Metal components exhibit a reapplied blue finish overall. Plain wood straight grip buttstock and forend have been sanded and revarnished. Blade front sight with semi-buckhorn U-notch rear sight. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their reapplied blue finish, exhibiting scattered areas of varnish and oxidation overall, with some areas of pitting present beneath the finish. Mirror bore, exhibiting strong rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (24-2366/MLW). Cal. 32 W.S. (32 Special). S# 427837. Bbl. 24 5/8" (originally 26") part round, part octagon with dovetailed Marble No. 5 front sight and Winchester 22-F Sporting rear. M...morefg. 1907 with rifle stock set having crescent buttplate and capped forend. Neatly stamped (about 1/16" high) 'TELLIS COLONG" ("NG" not very clear; possibly "WG") on top flat in front of manufacturer's markings. CONDITION: fair overall with sanded and refinished stock set; unrepaired crack on right side in lower front wrist area. Refinished metal well worn from cradling and use. Poor to fair bore that is dark, worn and with even pitting. Shallow groove filed at top front of receiver likely for sighting without rear barrel sight plus hair trigger. Not Curio due to shortened barrel. (24-1543/NW). MODERN. $450-600.

Plain wood straight grip buttstock and forend. Marbles No. 6H blade front sight with U-notch ladder rear sight. Upper receiver tang is mounted with a Lyman aperture rear sight. CONDITION: metal components retain fair amounts of their original factory blue finish, with the balance exhibiting wear and thinning overall that shows through to gray and brown patinas, with areas of age-related discoloration and spots of surface oxidation/pitting present overall. Fair bore, exhibiting consistent scattered spots of moderate pitting while retaining strong rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (24-2555/MLW). CURIO. $600-900.
