WONDERFUL SAVAGE M1907 .45 US MILITARY TEST PISTOL

Lot # 1154 (Sale Order: 157 of 853)

SN 224. Cal. 45ACP. Exceeding scarce, original finish Savage .45 ACP as tested by the US military against the Colt. One of approximately 300 pistols made between 1907-191...more1 and one of just a handful of all-matching pistols with its original high polish finish. Well documented, with citation by SN in U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920 by E. Scott Meadows on page 261 and appearing in full color on the dust jacket’s back cover. After US testing, the vast majority were reconditioned by Savage, a process that included the removal of most of the slide address, leaving only the CAL .45 marking, and refinishing the pistol with a matte blue. This particular gun is exceptional in having avoided that refurbishment, still appearing as per its original submission with full address two-line address on barrel rib referencing manufacturer, location in Utica, N.Y, and 1905 patent date suffixed by CAL .45. Safety detents marked “FIRE” and “SAFE”. Fitted with fully checkered walnut grips and magazine whose body is correctly in-the-white having a blued floorplate. Rack #36 stamped on top of left grip. Major components finished with Savage’s brilliant high-polish blue; barrel is in the white; trigger and magazine release lever are color case hardened. Detailed disassembly shows a fully matching gun, the sight bar overstamped 224/151, both grips factory matching as is the magazine. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Savage featured on the cover of The Gun Report, Volume 37. Number 6. November 1991 and featured on pages 26-28. CONDITION: Approximately 97-98% bright original blue with the exception of the grip safety whose contact surface has greyed. Comparable condition small parts showing no suggestion of enhancement. Crisp grips with sharp checkering, the right panel having a 1” hairline crack extending up from rear base. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. You will look a very, very long time before finding a Savage 1907 Military .45 ACP this nice! PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (24-1603/LA). CURIO. $30,000-45,000.

SUPER EARLY COLT M1911 MILITARY PISTOL.

Lot # 1156 (Sale Order: 159 of 853)

SN. 40. Cal. 45ACP. Fabulous-looking Colt 1911 military, one of the first 83 pistols to have BOTH the large-letter Colt address and patent dates AND the large size “UNITE...moreD STATES PROPERTY” marking on the left side of the frame, the smaller format appearing soon after serial number 113, beginning in January 1912. This pistol has all the earliest features including the short hammer, rounded rear sight, early style safety lever, earliest magazine catch lock, high polish peacock blue small parts, and early 1st Type magazine with pinned exposed base lanyard loop floorplate. Left side of slide with large character two-line address reflecting patent dates of 1897 and 1911 followed by the Colt manufacturing address in Hartford. Behind the serrations is the encircled rampant colt. “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” in LARGE LETTERS is on the left side of the frame along with the rondel containing the intertwined WGP (Walter G. Penfield) inspector marking. The right side of the slide is marked “MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY” with “No. 40”, on the right side of the frame. Fitted with large diamond, checkered walnut grips and fully blued magazine with pinned lanyard loop floorplate. As was true for the first 100 1911s, disassembly shows NO inspection marks on the slide above the firing pin retainer, no markings on the barrel, and no markings around the disconnector. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Paper ordnance tag reading "Office of Chief Ordnance, War Dept, April 12, 1912". CONDITION: Approximately 95% beautifully and very professionally restored blue, planes flat and markings crisp, with wear as appropriate to a lightly holstered pistol, the majority around the muzzle and over the flat mainspring housing. Comparable wear on the original finished peacock blued small parts, the grips with sharp diamonds and age-appropriate darkening. Bright bore with sharp rifling. All markings were engraved during the refinishing process. Perfect manual mechanics. A super early, super rare Colt 1911 by any metric! (24-2215/LA). CURIO. $25,000-35,000.

GORGEOUS COLT 1911 NAVY.

Lot # 1157 (Sale Order: 160 of 853)

SN 576. Cal. 45ACP. Beautiful Colt 1911 Navy, one of the first 500 pistols delivered to the U.S. Navy in the serial range 501-1000 shipped March 7, 1912. Well documented,...more on the front dust cover of E. Scott Meadows’ book “U.S. Military Automatic Pistols, 1894-1920”, serial number ranges of Navy pistols / delivery dates appearing on page 158. This pistol has all the earliest features including the short hammer, rounded rear sight, early style safety lever, earliest magazine catch lock, high polish peacock blue small parts, and early two-tone magazine with pinned exposed base lanyard loop floorplate. Left side of slide with two-line address reflecting patent dates of 1897 and 1911 followed by the Colt manufacturing address in Hartford. Behind the serrations is the encircled rampant colt. “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” is on the left side of the frame along with the haloed rondel containing the intertwined WGP (Walter G. Penfield) inspector marking. The right side of the slide is marked “MODEL OF 1911 U.S. NAVY” with “No. 576”, slightly haloed, on the right side of the frame. Fitted with large diamond, checkered walnut grips and correct dual tone magazine with pinned lanyard loop floorplate. Disassembly shows the back of the slide with lazy, serifed “H” over firing pin retainer, the frame with a serifed “H” of the same size forward of the disconnector along with the assembler mark “9”. The barrel is largely unmarked, no “H”, a partial “1” in front of the lug. CONDITION: Approximately 95-97% original blue excepting some patchy fading/flaking on frontstrap and slight thinning of the mainspring housing towards the butt. In close examination in the wear patterns of this pistol we believe there is a possibility due the differences in polishing that the slide may have been swapped at some point very early in this pistols life. Bright, crisp bore. Perfect manual mechanics. A beautiful, early Colt 1911 Navy, on the cover of E. Scott Meadows’ book, that would be difficult to upgrade. (24-2214/LA). $45,000-75,000.

THE VERY FIRST COLT 1911A1 SEMI AUTO PISTOL FROM

Lot # 1158 (Sale Order: 161 of 853)

THE 1937 CONTRACT. SN 710001. Cal. 45ACP. There were very few 1911A1 pistols made in 1937, serial range 710001 (this example being THE VERY FIRST PISTOL)-712349, delivere...mored to the military in three separate shipments. This example was part of the first shipment, leaving Colt for Springfield Armory on Jan 19, 1937, as part of a group of 200 guns. Interestingly, although all the 1937 production pistols had 1911A1 features, their slides were erroneously marked with the earlier 1911 designation. All were finished with a brushed blue military finish, their slides serial numbered under the firing pin retainer, and the top of the barrel chamber left bright- “COLT 45 AUTO” appearing on the left side. This standard configuration pistol has all the check marks. The left side of the slide has the usual two-line address reflecting the 1902 and 1913 patent years, rampant colt, and Colt’s address in Hartford, CT. The left upper trigger guard web with a serifed “H” over the verified proof mark. The right side of the slide has “MODEL OF 1911. U. S. ARMY”; the frame is marked “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” over “No 710001”; and there is a small inspection “60” on the right upper trigger guard web. Fitted with coarsely checkered walnut grips and a two-tone magazine marked “COLT/45 AUTO” on the flat floorplate. Disassembly shows the left side of the barrel chamber with “COLT 45 AUTO” and a “P” on the left side of the lug. The rear of the slide has the full SN 710/001 under the firing pin retainer, and the inspector initials R/ C are to the right of the disconnector. CONDITION: Professional restoration, with flat planes and super-crisp markings, that now appears virtually new. Comparable condition dark, sharply checkered grips. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. A super-hard to find production date for the serious collector of 1911A1 pistols! PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (24-1607/LA). CURIO. $15,000-30,000.

MAJOR GENERAL ALDEN SIBLEY'S OFFICERS MODEL COLT

1903 HAMMERLESS POCKET AUTO PISTOL. Cal. 32 ACP. S# 558823. Bbl. 3 3/4". Major General Alden Sibley was a heavily decorated Officer who served in the United States armed ...moreforces from Vietnam to the Korean War and played a major role in US policy during this period. Sibley was the personal military aide at the White House, to President Frederick D. Roosevelt. He was heavily involved in the logistics planning of the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944. His son, Frederick Sibley indicated that his father carried this gun during the term of fulfilling his duties from the time he acquired it. The following statement was provided by the consigner to share the interesting background of this fascinating pistol. "To whom it may concern: Regarding Major General Alden Sibley’s Colt M. 1903 pistol, 32 auto, serial number 558823. The gun was manufactured by Colt in 1941 in Hartford, CT. Vin & Linda Pestilli have been next door neighbors with the Sibley family on Sam Brown Hill Road in Brownfield, Maine for over 40 years. Major General Sibley passed away on February 18, 1999 and the home subsequently sold. In 1999, Major General Sibley’s son, Frederick Sibley decided to move back to New Jersey and had no interest in retaining possession of his fathers pistol due to the overbearing New Jersey gun laws. Frederick gave the gun to me in 1999, where it’s been locked in a safe for over 25 years. Frederick told me that his father carried this pistol during WWII and during his time in the European Theater of Operations where he was heavily involved in the logistics planning of the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944. Alden Sibley was on General Eisenhower’s staff in France during D-Day. Between 1937 until 1938, Alden Sibley was the personal military aide at the White House, to President Frederick D. Roosevelt. The left slide was marked with a 2-line address, referencing Colt's patent dates, suffixed by the name of the company, along with its address in Hartford, CT. Behind the serrations is the encircled Rampant Colt logo. On the left side of the forward frame is "UNITED STATES PROPERTY"; an intertwined "WGP" inspection logo, that cuts through the blue, is just above the mag. release button. The right side of the slide is marked "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY", the frame marked "No 63285". This pistol has the squared rear sight with U-notch, early stub hammer with fine unbordered checkering, and some small parts that are fire blued. Fitted with checkered walnut grips with prominent diamonds and an earlier pinned base 2-tone mag. with lanyard loop, to which is attached 3 dog tags belonging to Colonel John Turner, 128th Infantry Division, National Guard. Disassembly shows a sm. "H" on the frame, forward of the disconnector, that is repeated on the back of the slide, just above the firing pin retainer. Bbl. is marked with a "H" on the top of the chamber, with lazy "J" on the left side of the lug, and a "5" on the bottom of the bbl. in front of the lug. MAGS: 1 7-rd. CONDITION: very good plus, with at least 85% bright original blue, the balance showing holster wear, as one might expect from a pistol that has seen moderate service. Most of the wear is on the front and rear grip straps that have largely toned to a gray. Comparable condition grips with oil stains and blunted checkering, most pronounced on the right panel near the bottom. Very good mag. Dark bore, with shallow rifling. Correct manual mechanics. A very desirable and early 1911 military pistol with dog tags attributing ownership to Colonel John Turner and fitted with an even earlier Colt mag! PROVENANCE: from The Collection of Curtis H Halvorson. (23-5810/LMA). CURIO. $4,500-6,500.

Lot # 1167 (Sale Order: 170 of 853)

Cal. 45 ACP. S# 180682 (Colt frame mfg. 1917). Per "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920" by Edward Scott Meadows "The A.J. Savage Munitions Company was incorporated...more April 23, 1917... Arthur W. Savage, founder of Savage Arms Corportion, was the principle stockholder. His son, Arthur J. Savage, for whom the company was named, was also a shareholder.... An Ordnance Department contract, number P12303-2078SA, was let to the A.J. Savage Munitions Company on July 20, 1918 calling for 100,000 pistols at $14.00 each... The A.J Savage Munitions Company pistol contract was suspended on December 4, 1918 with no deliveries thereunder having being made. It has been assumed that the Model 1911 slides bearing only Colt patent dates and the letter S inside an Ordnance bomb logo were products of the A.J. Savage Munition Company. While this may be the case, there is no documentary evidence known to the author to support this contention... Regardless of their origin, these slides are usually found on World War I era receivers or on Colt manufactured replacement frames..." This pistol has a 5" Colt Type 5 bbl.
