WITH NIEDNER BARREL & GRIFFIN & HOWE STOCK. Cal. 400 Niedner. S# 12450 (Mauser), 658 (H&H), both on bottom of action, 658 on sidewall & bolt. The 400 Niedner was designed...more by Niedner Rifle Co., and was essentially the 35 Newton necked up. It is likely that ammunition could be fabricated today using 375 Ruger brass. The bullet used at the time was of 411 diameter, as used in the 405 Winchester. The 26" heavyweight sporter bbl. is fitted w/ sleeved on front ramp holding sm. white bead & sight protector. Left side rear bbl. is stamped ".400 NIEDNER" & w/ "NP" in an oval (Niedner proof). Standard length model 98 Mauser auction was most likely sourced from a circa 1923 production Holland & Holland takedown bolt rifle #658. This number is on the root of the bolt, which is bent & cranked in H&H fashion as used at that time. Action has had a Lyman 57 reciever sight installed & trigger has been modified to an adj. single stage type with ingenious attached mechanism that appears to be of possible G&H or Niedner make. Bottom metal is of steel w/ slightly dropped box & has hinged straddle floorplate w/ button release in bow. It is unnumbered, but is marked "MADE IN ENGLAND" on left side of box. Front screw hole & screw are of H&H takedown type w/ large head screw slotted to take a coin. Pistol grip stock of nicely fiddle figured & lightly streaked European walnut measures 14 1/4" over old leather faced Silver type pad. Stock exhibits early 50s Griffin & Howe styling w/ Monte Carlo comb, deep swept shadowline cheekpiece, horn forend tip, steel gripcap & usual very well cut point pattern checkering at grip & around forend. A vacant gold oval & sling eye are on toeline. CONDITION: very fine as refinished.Stock retains most of an older oil refinish. Checkering recut. CUSTOM VINTAGE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 BOLT ACTION

Lot # 2041 (Sale Order: 41 of 810)

RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 1451283. Bbl. (stamped "283" on bottom adjacent to action) is 24" sporter weight with banded front sight having Sheard style brass bead sight, borde...morered random engraved pattern with borders on ramp to reduce reflection, flutes on sides plus provision for hood; no provision on barrel or receiver for a rear sight. Fitted with side mounted Griffin & Howe lever detachable scope mount set using black anodized aluminum rings of 7/8" diameter. Scope is All Weather Lyman Alaskan (S# 44166) of 2 1/2 power having free standing post reticle. Manufactured in 1934 without action modifications other than Buehler low scope safety and sporter profile modification of bolt handle. Nice walnut stock set with fancy marbling in butt is by Lewis E. Straub (born 1906) of Mill Hall, PA having 9/21/46 date in barrel channel plus deeply stamped "STOCK BY L. E. STRAUB MILL HALL, PA". Cross bolt for recoil lug plus Winchester style detachable swivel bases; eye secured by barrel band within tip area of forend plus Super Grade style 2 screw base at rear. Straight comb with shadow lined, raised cheek piece. Vintage brown Pachmayr ventilated recoil pad with black base. Semi-beavertail forend design with wrap around borderless checkering having fleu-de-lis plus ribbon banner at mid point; similar pattern in grip area (checkering is about 12 LP!). Grip cap appears to be of black hard rubber uniformly 3/16" thick and retained by 2 slotted head screws. Standard 1903 floor plate / trigger guard assembly without contouring or special floorplate release; standard (lightened) military 2 stage trigger. Supplied information by consignor states this is a Pachmayr custom, yet many aspects are not of that style. Pachmayr usually jeweled bolts and extractors, used finer checkering, did not use recoil bolt on such a mild caliber, usually modified trigger guard / floorplate, used adjustable triggers, not likely to have semi-beavertail forend, often reshaped rear action tang and had a higher degree of overall quality. Consignor further notes page 34 of enclosed book "Frank A, Pachmayr America's Master Gunsmith" as support of this rifle, yet the information is not supportive. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: above mentioned book and summarization sheet by consignor. CONDITION: very good metal finish of about 90% with high edge wear and light handling scratches throughout to include scope body; some slight screw slot damage. Stock is very good to excellent with minimal light handling marks plus ring around front sling eye. Recoil pad is quite solid from age (no suppleness) with 2 small chips on left edge. Small "U" shaped crack behind action of about 3/4" in length plus 3/8" hairline crack in front of trigger guard assembly. When trigger is pulled to end of first stage, it becomes loose and doesn't return to normal; likely due to lighter spring as final stage pull is great. Good candidate for a quality aftermarket trigger. Near excellent bore and optics. (24-778/NW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.

MAJOR TOWNSEND WHELEN'S LUDWIG WUNDHAMMER

Lot # 2041A (Sale Order: 42 of 810)

SPRINGFIELD RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 369038. This historically significant rifle came to light in recent years when, during an online search, Michael Petrov (author of "Cust...moreom Gunmakers of the 20th Century") found this old rifle listed for sale. In the second volume of his books, he relates the history of his buying this rifle and the research he undertook to tell its story. In chapter 3, he identifies, pictures, & describes this particular rifle and its history, from identification of the Whelen family crest found on the bbl. to Whelen's picturing the rifle in his book "The American Rifle" (1918), as well as his 1922 Alberta hunt when the rifle was given to Whelen's guide and friend, Stanley Clark. The rifle is based on a Springfield Armory 1903 action made in 1909, which saw little alteration. The original bbl. was recontoured, and the military rear sight was removed. Bbl. date "6-09" still remains. Whelen's family crest is engraved at the top of the breech end. At one time, the rifle was drilled & tapped for scope blocks. The bottom of the bolt knob is flattened & checkered, and the right side of the action bridge is fitted with a prototype Lyman 48 receiver sight with the bottom of the long slide graduated to "30" and marked "Patent Pending". Sight appears to be mostly hand finished and is stamped "4" on the inside of the slide. Petrov relates that "it is believed that no more than 6 of these were made. One went to Crossman, and one went to Whelen. With their input, the final sight as we know it today was built." Magazine follower remains unaltered. Trigger blade is checkered, and the trigger is still double-pull, but the second pull is light, crisp, & clean. Bottom metal is plain & unaltered from the standard issue. As described & pictured by Whelen, the rifle originally had the bottom metal heavily engraved, and this engraving included the insignia of the Campfire Club of America. Petrov speculates that the bottom metal was removed by Whelen around 1922 when he gave the rifle to Stanley Clark during a hunting expedition in Alberta, Canada (Petrov also relates that the rifle was sent to him from northern Alberta). The pistol grip stock is made of dense European walnut, with a stump figure and a bit of marbling. Trap steel buttplate is serrated. The right-hand cheekpiece is of the style that would later become synonymous with Whelen's name. Checkering is of a semi-fancy pattern. The steel gripcap gives an idea of the extent of the engraving found on the original bottom metal with its geomtric bands. The stock itself is known to have been made by Ludwig Wundhammer (1853–1919), who was one of the earliest makers of custom bolt-action rifle stocks in America. It exhibits his early style with Germanic sidepanels and a small schnabled tip. His shop was in Los Angeles, California, and in his working time, he produced perhaps a couple hundred very fine sporting rifles. Today, his rifles are highly regarded and eagerly sought after. CONDITION: fair to good, metal parts retaining about 20% custom blue, considerably silvered in action area and bottom metal from hand wear. Stock also shows considerable use and a possible old light refinish with sharp edges that are a bit rounded; the checkering is considerably worn & dirty and has not been recut. There is a 4" crack on the left side of the action area running from the bolt stop down and forward through the side panel, with another light 2" crack running around the center of the side panel down towards the trigger. Bore is still good, shiny with light frosting throughout and considerable throat erosion. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: Collection of Michael Petrov - Amoskeag Auction #104. (22-2223/MGM). CURIO. $5,000-12,000.
